For Everyone- Do you think that God really cares what church you attend?

Orthodox Jews all have one understanding in general (on the major issues), and the others tend to interpret it based on majority vote/beliefs of their denomination.

I’ve learned over the years not to judge a Jew for not keeping Torah as strictly as I might, even if I dislike some of their interpretations. Everyone is at a different level of understanding, and I believe God only holds us responsible for as much light as He has chosen to give us at each stage in our life of spiritual development.
I believe firmly that God expects us all to come to Him as much as we can according to what amount of Grace and understanding He has given us. If I love God with all my heart and try to please him in all I do, then that is what God judges me on. Not by a building nor a Church name.

Now by the same token of God gave me the Grace and understanding hat I should not be in a particular place, then I should NOT be there. period. And vice versa

I agree with you both. I don’t think God is focusing on what denomination you belong to but rather how you live your life. Do you do what Jesus tells us do we feed the hungry for example. It just really bothers me that I see so many people on this forum saying negative things about other religions in particular Islam in referring to Muslims as terrorists. I like your example of the good Samaritan here’s another example we should think about what about the passage where Jesus separates the goats from the Sheep and those who didn’t do those things that Jesus told us were asking when did we see you Lord? When were you hungry?
The fact of the matter is mainstream Islam is a religion of peace and those who claim to be Muslims and commit violent acts in the name of Islam are not really living the true Muslim faith but rather a perverted version of it. I post this question to Catholics and even other religions. If we heard that someone who claimed to be Catholic committed a violent act in the name of Catholicism would we want our entire religion to be judged by this perverted perversion of our faith? Because if not, why are we so willing to do it when it comes to Islam. After all the Bible tell this if we judge others i.e. Muslims or Islam we will be judged ourselves by the same standards and remember Jesus has also told us to love one another and in my opinion we cannot do that as Catholics if we are too busy judging other religions. This is just my own opinion as a Catholic.

How do I go about choosing my religion? Will anyone do? Which ones should I stay away from?

I agree completely, and that applies to both Christianity and Judaism!

The Christians here might want to re-read the parable of the good Samaritan which Jesus told.

In ancient times, the Samaritans were a very despised group. They had originally been Jews, but turned to heresy and were kicked out.
Uh -no. They were Gentiles who were attempting to practice Judaism, because they found themselves in the land of the Jews, and the God of that land (by their way of thinking) was the Jewish God. So, by their way of thinking, they decided that they should worship the Jewish God.

The Jews were offended that these Gentiles should attempt to do this, so they were ostracized from the Temple and from the “pur-laine” (so to speak) Jewish cities - they were required to remain in their own lands and cities, so they developed their own rituals and customs for worshipping the Jewish God, whose land they were in.

As I understand it, they had originally been brought in by one of the many conquerers of the Old Testament, to take care of the land, and also to pay taxes to this same conqueror, until the Jews should be permitted to return, after a period of exile.

well the only advice I can give you for this is to tell you how I chose mine. I was baptized Catholic but I was not raised in the faith and had no knowledge of the Christian life. I believed in God but did not understand who Jesus was or why he died on the cross. My aunt who is Protestant introduced me to Jesus after that I decided to look at all different kinds of religion I studied Islam and several Protestant denominations such as Baptist but I never really felt fed by them the way my aunt is my best friend from college invited me to attend Mass with her several times I refused at first but finally I excepted her invitation and that very night during Mass the Holy Spirit spoke to me in a way that I cannot describe and I just knew the Catholic Church was where I was supposed to be. Two days later I made the decision to not only return to the faith but I also made the decision to enter confirmation for adults. I was confirmed in 2004. again this is my personal opinion based on my own journey of faith I wish you the best of luck in your journey.

The Shomronim (samaritans) were of partial Jewish ancestry; they intermarried with Gentiles after a while, and their Jewish ancestry became lessened. But they were originally of mostly or all Jewish ancestry.

I have grown up Catholic and was Mormon and both stress a ‘true’ church. While other Churches say they are right because they are founded on Jesus and not some leader. It got me thinking. Does God care what church we belong to?
I believe God cares about our lives in every detail. His providence extends throughout our life. I experienced a call to join the Catholic Church (which I have expounded upon in many older posts), so I must stand on the side that God had a plan for me to be here, where I am. Wherever a person is, I am sure God has a plan for that person, and that God cares how the person follows and obeys.

Think of Jesus and Jerusalem, how he longed to gather its children like a hen gathers chicks under wings, but they were unwilling. Truly he seemed to care about them. Why would God send so many prophets to Israel if he did not care? Those are not the actions of a God who does not care if people stand or if they fall.

But, if you are asking does God only listens to the prayers of a person if he or she currently sits in a certain pew, then I say no.

Hi my friend Patty,

I know that God cares where you worship Him. As you know, I’ve been Mormon… Pentecostal, and HOME to being Catholic.

No logic will explain to you why, but scripture tells us that we must worship Him in spirit and in TRUTH. We must choose Life. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Him. We have to take Him at His Word. He was very explicit in John 6. You cannot have His Body and Blood without being in His will. You know that His will for you and for all is to be in total complete communion with Him and the rest of the body of Christ.

Where shall we go? He has the words of everlasting LIFE!!!

Love you sis
Steph

The Catholic Church acknowledges the sincerety of the hearts of those genuinely seeking the truth. CCC 846-848. But that does not mean God is not leading all His children to His Church. 👍

what do you mean by real presence are you talking about the actual body and blood of Christ or the actual presence of God in the world?
The Real Presence - body, blood, soul and divinity in Holy Communion.

Following the logical progression - If you find yourself in heaven you will be Catholic and it will have been through the one, holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church which Jesus founded for that very reason. It can be no other way. So why not join now? 🙂

Until recently I was not a believer in my faith as a catholic. Although raised Catholic I fell away, questioning my faith and the existence of God. I continued going to church, in many ways for my parents, but my heart wasn’t there. About a month back I visited one of America’s most loved cathedrals and found myself looking at all the artwork and thinking about if the artists even wanted to do the work or if they were forced by the dominant power of the time the Catholic church. I felt very detached as I walked around the church admiring all of the artwork, and found myself only able to appreciate the moment for the intricacy of the art. As I was finishing my tour of the cathedral I suddenly was overwhelmed with tears. I felt something which I cannot describe. It was a feeling I had never felt before in my life and have yet to feel again. I had an overwhelming sense of peace and love, a feeling that blew any past experiences of happiness and contentment out of the water. I looked up and saw I was standing in front of a picture of Our Lady of Guadeloupe. I left that church a different man.

The next day I decided to go through my email and delete old files, a task I do probably twice a year. I found an email from an old friend of mine about our Lady of Guadeloupe. This particular friend has probably sent me a total of three emails ever in our history of knowing each other. The following day I went to mass at a local church and sat in the same spot I had the past three weeks. Directly in front of my pew ten feet away was a portrait of Our Lady of Guadeloupe.

Now those last occurrences could have been a coincidence, although I do not believe they were, but my experience at the Cathedral is enough for me to believe in God and in Mary’s love for all of us.

So back to the original question. Does God really care what church you attend?

This is a question i have been struggling with myself.

I originally fell away from the faith because I saw a lot of hypocrisy. Things didn’t add up. I heard Catholics say one thing and do another. Very “devote” Catholics who said the rosary every night were the first to judge and the last to help others. In simple words I saw more “Love” for others in the way Jesus loved us from some atheists then I did from many Catholics. I truly believe in Catholics lived their faith as John Paul the 2nd and Mother Theresa did there would be a lot less animosity towards the Catholic Church and a lot more conversions. By living a true life of faith you speak louder then words. In fact in many ways I find when you speak words out against others beliefs (protestants as well as any other religion) you may be doing more damage then good. I see it even here in these forums, not necessarily this one, but a “holier than thou attitude.” This is an attitude Catholics can not afford to hold.

From my own experience I have found Catholicism to be the way to God and holiness. Is it the only way, no. Pope John Paul the 2nd told us that there are truths to all religions, Catholicism is just the most complete.

Does God really care what church you attend? If you truly believe Catholicism is the most complete and accurate faith, and you beleive God wants us to follow his will then yes he does care. Catholicism should be seen as the best means we know of to get closer to God and strive for holiness. Does that mean he will condemn those who are not Catholic, I don’t think so. He will judge us on the state of our souls and our personal holiness. Catholicism is the best tool to reach this holiness, but that doesn’t mean you cannot reach this holiness outside of Catholicism.

And most of all we are in no place to judge others on their faith. That’s God’s job.

Beautiful post.

One thing though - Jesus’ great commission was to spread the good news. That is part and parcel of being Catholic.

It is important to be the member of the True Church because it only teaches the Truth. Not part of the Truth but the Truth. There is only one True Church and that is the Catholic Church, it only teaches what Jesus Christ taught and the apostles preached in the Church’s formation years. All other denominations are deviations from this True Church. How can one claim to be a follower of Christ if he or she believes in what has not been taught or what is a misrepresentation of the Truth. The True Church leaders have been guided by the Holy Spirit and they cannot be wrong in their pronouncements of articles of faith.

I agree with you there we do have the responsibility however we must be careful when doing that because we don’t want to actually have the effect of pushing people away from God and Jesus rather than toward him. That’s why I think each person has to witness through their own actions in their own way.
To bring up the body and blood point you may in a previous post yes as a Catholic I do personally believe in the presence of the body and blood in the divinity of Christ. However I also feel that it is not my job nor my responsibility to judge those who do not believe what I do. I would rather witness to them by showing them I’m doing my best to be a faithful Catholic while living my daily life. And that’s how I witness to people I just don’t think I have the right to judge whether those who don’t believe what I do because I don’t want to be judged myself on judgment day. I take the Bible very seriously and if I judge others I myself am also subject to that same judgment. In the way I figure it I’ve got plenty of stuff I have to answer for already I don’t need to add being judgmental to it. I have lots of friends from many different faiths and I’m just not willing to make the judgment that my friends won’t go to heaven that is God’s decision not mine so therefore I do not believe that Catholicism is the ONLY way to get to heaven.

If the Christian deity truly cares which specific denomination a person belongs to, that would really reflect very poorly on him, in my view.

Even in Judaism, we don’t believe God really cares which synagogue a Jew goes to, as long as they are committed to keeping Torah. The Lubavitcher Rebbe often used to say that there is no such thing as “Orthodox”, “Conservative” or “Reform” Jews, only Jews that are less or more observant.

I think people tend to get too hung up on religiosity and lose sight of spirituality. Its not the same thing!
Hi Hashem,

In Judaism, what would they think of you Hashem, being here at this Catholic Site? …Would Judaism themselves think poorly of you? …Would they think of you less or more observant?

I don’t think God would’ve gone through all the trouble of making His Revelation on Earth known if He didn’t care what church we should belong to.

So, yes, I do think God cares.

There are other Jews on this site also. I have posted to many Christian and non-Christian sites, in an attempt to learn more about other religions for educational and other purposes.

Sometimes people misunderstand, and think I do this because I am interested in joining their religion. I find the more I know about other religions, the better I can counsel Jews who might be tempted to join those religions, or who have joined and now want to leave (I am a volunteer exit counselor in the Jewish community.)
