I don’t think anyone should criticize Hashem for his involvement. I believe as Catholics we are called also to learn about others faiths as to better understand our own and to appreciate the common grounds among people. Although we find our religion the most complete that doesn’t mean other religions don’t hold truth as well.

I have grown up Catholic and was Mormon and both stress a ‘true’ church. While other Churches say they are right because they are founded on Jesus and not some leader. It got me thinking. Does God care what church we belong to?
Of Course not God does not care which Christian Church one attends.

I do beleive however that LDS is not Christian.

The whole of the Law and the Prophets can be summed up this way.
To love God with your whole heart your whole soul your whole mind and to love your nieghbor as yourself.

THE CHURCH

If it doesn’t matter which church you attend (or even whether you are a christian), what did Christ mean when He said “no one comes to the Father except through me?” (John 14:6).

I can see protestants holding that Christ is present in all of christianity (wherever two of you are gathered in my name), but catholics believe that Christ came here with the intention of founding an actual church. If this is true, then in light of the above passage, it would seem that the answer is yes, it does matter which church you attend.

Protestants have part of God’s message in the form of the Bible, but they lack valid sacraments that dispense grace (with the exception, possibly, of baptism). So it’s easy to see how being in an imperfect union with Christ does jeopardize one’s hopes of salvation.

I hope this doesn’t sound judgemental; I’m just trying to answer the question in an honest and straightforward manner. and i don’t expect everyone to agree with me.

No one can come to the Father accept through Jesus. Jesus came to earth in redemption for our sins (original sin), to open the gates of heaven for sinners. Being that we are all sinners this means no one can go to the Father accept through Jesus. This doesn’t mean that one must practice Christianity to get to heaven, only that we cannot get to heaven on our own accord. A holy person is a holy person regardless of religious denomination.

If they try to get to Heaven by some means other than through Jesus, they will fail to do so. This means that, at the very least, one must practice some form of Christianity.

i wish that were true but i think it contradicts a lot of other things christ said – as well as the plain meaning of John 14:6.

I’ll have to say I disagree, it’s very hard to say that there are not people in heaven who are not Catholic. Say a person is never introduced to Christianity, can they be held occountable for this. Do people who live Jesus’s teachings of love such as Ghandi go to hell for the mere fact they don’t go to mass? I don’t think so. I would go so far as to say most religious leaders in the Catholic church as well as many saints would agree. I think He does care, which is why Jesus presented Peter with the task of building His Church upon him. If He didn’t care about the details, He would have told all of His Disciples the same thing–I build my Church on every one of you. While we are** all **part of the Church…the ‘Church’ is human, and not really about brick and mortar, it is about a methodology of worship. If we are all to interpret Scripture whichever way we choose, and start our own ‘types’ of worship, thus thousands of denominations emerging daily it seems, then He wouldn’t have given Peter the awesome task of holding the keys to the Kingdom–thus as Catholics, we believe he is our first pope.

If you find yourself in heaven you will be a member of Christ’s universal church.

There cannot be, since otherwise we are saying that people could get to Heaven without knowing what Heaven is, or how to get there. They will have converted to the Catholic Church at some point along the way -perhaps not in this life, and not in a way that can be known to us, but no one will get to Heaven without first finding out what it is, and how to get there - and for this, they will have needed to become Catholics.

You don’t need to be Catholic to know how to ‘get to’ heaven. I don’t believe that the Catholic Church teaches that in order to be saved, one must be Catholic. If a person in his/her dying hours praises God, and accepts Jesus, and is truly repentant for all of his/her wrong doings on earth…God’s mercy could easily allow that person to have eternal life. I think that there are so many variables, that none of us as mere mortals could even fathom–because in our limitations…we cannot fathom the kind of mercy that God has. We just can’t. So, we put these limits…well, if someone is not this or that…or breaks this rule or that…no, I don’t think that we can ever fully grasp the awesome capacity of God’s abundant mercy.

We simply cannot say with absolute certainty…that only (practicing) Catholics will be in heaven.

Yes we can. If you are in heaven you will be a practicing Catholic. Even better you will be an expert, a professional!

Just for clarification:
Above all else, it must be firmly believed that “the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and baptism (cf. Mk 16:16; Jn 3:5), and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through baptism as through a door”.77 This doctrine must not be set against the universal salvific will of God (cf. 1 Tim 2:4); “it is necessary to keep these two truths together, namely, the real possibility of salvation in Christ for all mankind and the necessity of the Church for this salvation”.78
The Church is the “universal sacrament of salvation”,79 since, united always in a mysterious way to the Saviour Jesus Christ, her Head, and subordinated to him, she has, in God’s plan, an indispensable relationship with the salvation of every human being.80 For those who are not formally and visibly members of the Church, “salvation in Christ is accessible by virtue of a grace which, while having a mysterious relationship to the Church, does not make them formally part of the Church, but enlightens them in a way which is accommodated to their spiritual and material situation. This grace comes from Christ; it is the result of his sacrifice and is communicated by the Holy Spirit”;81 it has a relationship with the Church, which “according to the plan of the Father, has her origin in the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit”.82…

it’s hard but it’s also hard to see how the opposite could be true. if all religions lead to god then there must be a god above christianity’s god – something which is not what the catholic church teaches.

Say a person grows up in a secluded part of Africa and is never in any way introduced to Christ or his teachings. We know God is just, so I cannot see him limiting heaven to only people who had Christianity presented to them during their life. What fault is it of a person who has never rejected Christ but has just never known him?

It is illogical to conclude anything else other than one, holy, Catholic and Apostolic. It defies reason. I fail to understand how so many have bought into this idea.

I hear God doesn’t care if I (put in anything you want here) so much. What a shallow bankrupt idea.

we cannot say with absolute certainty that ONLY Catholics will be in heaven…no, we really can’t. I think it’s rather dangerous to start looking at our Christian brothers and sisters who may be living Christ filled lives, and telling them they will not see heaven, unless they convert to Catholicism. There are many levels of heaven…maybe Catholics will have the penthouse, but…😛

Kidding aside, Jesus was specific that no one goes to the Father except through Him. I think that for those who do not understand our faith, or have refused to accept it…I’m not sure what might happen…we can speculate. But, again–God’s mercy is more than we can give, or fathom. It has no limits.
