For my family's sake what are the odds of an African pope?

Well this is going to be my third pope coming up soon. I am sort of excited for two reasons one Its a new beginning and a new pope gets me excited for the faith but probably one thing that can change our family forever. My mom is Jamaican and I told her that the cardinals aren’t all European there are African Cardinals too and our next pope could be African. She said if that were to happen she would convert to Catholicism. My mom isn’t an atheist and if that was to happen she would know that higher powers are at play :clapping: Honestly I dont really care too much if the pope is African, Asian, or European. However, this is a chance for my mom to actually listen to me and take the faith seriously :extrahappy: she really loves her church but I dislike anytime the have a baptism or communion service or baby christening and talk about how catholic methods are not scriptural. Honestly I know the scripture 2 Timothy 3:16 all scripture is God breathed but that doesn’t mean that God wrote it down on paper too. I mean the catholic church printed it on paper so I am certain they have a good idea of what is and what isn’t scriptural :amen: But I want my mom to give catholicism a chance. My entire life I have never heard any positive things said about the catholic church when I went to church with my mom and anything I was told was all half truths that I learned for myself. I have just come to not trust anything that someone tells me about catholicism and learn about it through someone who understands the faith better than me or pick up a book about it. Anyways what are the odds for an African pope. I mean we are coming pretty darn close aren’t we? We went from 400 years of straight italian popes to a polish pope then a german pope going a little more south could be a good change. Does anyone honestly think that she will convert? There would be peace at home me and my brother are trying to become catholic but my mom insists on staying with her church. I think that if the next pope is african it would be that wake up that God is actually in the Catholic church and you should be in it too. But I am understanding if hey the pope isn’t supposed to be african because its not my will but God’s will. What are your thoughts? I would totally be open to an African pope 😃 and I am praying that my mom does convert :gopray2: but honestly my mom not coverting wouldnt affect my conversion ive made up mind.
 
I pray that you mother converts to the Faith and that a Godly, orthodox, and wise Cardinal becomes the Pope (regardless of ethnicity). :gopray2:

I agree I hope the cardinal chosen is wise and a good leader and thank you I pray for her conversion as well

Agreed, 100%. I would also add she converts for any other reason than that she believes that the Catholic Church contains the fullness of Truth about God’s revelation, then she will likely fall away anyways. Looking for signs as a way to compel your conversion does not seem to me, to be a very good idea. In fact, it kind of feels like one is putting God to a test, which reminds me of Luke 4:12.

Very nice post. I hope you get your wish. The faith is growing in Africa. One of the greatest of the early Church fathers, St Augustine, was African. He was one of the greatest thinkers the Catholic Church had, ever. Does your mom know that? Peace to you sister.

Yeah Cardinal Marc Ouellet 👍 I would love it if he was to be the next pope because he’s canadian and I am canadian too haha but then again I am just excited all together
 
Only the Holy Spirit knows. In any case, you can become Catholic once you are able to be on your own or perhaps your Mom will eventually relent and allow you and your brother to enter RICA classes at a local Catholic Church. Linus

Thank you very much 🙂 yeah I am really happy that the catholic church is growing. Next year I get to join offically and I am so excited. I will read more about St. Augustine because I actually don’t know too much about him and I will tell her about him too. Peace to you too 😃

You are right. This is an exciting time for the Church. Yet, I keep in the front of my mind that God is in charge of His Church and He will be the one selecting the next Pope. I would be delighted to have an African Pope, but then again I will be delighted with whoever God chooses.
 
That the next pope will be African? Only God knows.
The odds of an African pope in general? 100%! There have been 3 so far:
  • Pope St. Gelasius I
  • Pope St. Miltiades
  • Pope St. Victor I

I don’t think it is really putting God to a test at all. My mom knows better in fact everything I know about the bible is because of her but I think she is more of a Thomas when it comes to the catholic church. Most people in Charismatic christian churches are because with all the things that have happened to the catholic church over the years like the reformation and all of the scandals they doubt that God’s existence is in the church at all. They doubt that the catholic church is a christian church and Thomas said “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.” John 20:25 Sometimes we want a reality check to help us believe again. I think something happens in everyone’s lives that makes them choose or confirms their faith in the catholic church. For me personally I felt abandoned by the Pentecostal church. It wasn’t allowing me to be who I wanted to be as a christian. Everyone was just for show and when I told my mom how I felt she said all sorts of horrible things that made me doubt there even was an existence in God. It was sort of like if God really did exist why am I so unhappy in his church. So for about a few weeks I became Agnostic because I wasn’t ready to say there was no God but I wasn’t ready to accept one either. One night my mom had kicked me out of family devotion for saying that the catholic church wrote the bible and the protestant church had edited it or something like that and I just cried for a long time. I prayed and asked God why it was so hard for me to be a christian now then it was before. I hadn’t been to catholic school in 7 years and every prayer I learned back then came back to memory word for word (this was before the new translations to the mass) I knew at that point I wasnt meant to be a protestant or an evangelical or a charismatic christian I was meant to be in the catholic church like my grandmother and all my other family members on my dad’s side. It was then I knew that God at told me right then an there my answer. I never questioned his existence again. I can’t say it will be the same way for my mom but I just hope that some kind of a push will encourage her that this is the way to go.

👍 yes 😃 any pope would be great but it is in God’s hands. None of my friends are all that excited for a new pope but I am quite happy about it
 
Confused Girl, the odds of a black Pope are good. According to oddsmaker PaddyPower.com, the front-runner is Card. Angela Scola, with 11/4 odds, followed by African Card. Peter Turkson of Ghana, with 7/2 odds. Scola leads the pack because he’s been on a track followed by many Popes, first as Patriarch of Venice, then as Arch. of Milan.

Turkson is second in the pack, I think, because he’s a good diplomat especially in African affairs, because African Christianity is flourishing. However, I’m very skeptical of a man who is comfortable with laws in Africa criminalizing homosexuality, sometimes punishable by death, because it’s “traditional”.

I’m fond of a ‘dark horse’–Card. Tagle of Manila Philippines. He’s a dark-horse because he’s been a cardinal a very short while and because he’s young. But might the conclave be looking for someone like that, someone who can’t be tarred with grave responsibility for the global sex abuse scandal? He studied in the US under Dulles and Komonchak, two of our best theologians. He said in an audio interview that he would like the church to “listen more” and “not pretend to have all the answers”; and that there are “different approaches to the truth”. There are many things to like about him. Many good things are said in the article and videos I’m posting. His flock adores him! He has charisma, humility, piety, knows how to work the media and seems to roll into one many good qualities of John Paul and John 23rd. Charismatic renewal is big in the Philippines. Maybe he would please you and your mother.

There’s much talk and rumor that a Latin American will be elected. Maradiaga has a good resume but I don’t want a man who said Jews control the media!

Look into Tagle. If you’re as impressed as I am, write your Cardinal. You have the right and perhaps the obligation to do so, under Canon 122.

I had requested a year ago to begin RCIA this year on my own at the local church where quite a few of my friends go. Because we all live relatively close to each other I don’t have to ask my mom for a ride on sundays and make her late for church. She would not let my brother go. Ive taken him to mass a few times and he loves to go so I bring him when I can. But come july/august I will have to be making phone calls out to the cathedral because I will be away at university and I would like to do RCIA since I will be there for 8 months so it would make sense to either do it at the church that is 5 mins away from the university or at the university parish if they have one.
