The fourth anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II April 2 was marked by a sense of anticipation following reports that the late pontiff would be beatified on the fifth anniversary next year.

The Vatican has played down those rumors. But among the thousands who flocked to his tomb and gathered in St. Peter’s Basilica for a memorial Mass, the feeling was strongly hopeful.

If it happens next year I doubt it will be on the 5th anniversary of his death.

April 2, 2010 is Good Friday.

Pope John Paul II, pray for your enemies who are still on Earth.

Holy Mary, pray for us.

I am not fully informed regarding the beatification of Blessed John Paul II, but I fully support it. Growing up as a Protestant, I did not closely follow the work of the Pope, but what I did see was truly impressive. His life of holiness was evident, and his message of love, peace, and charity was admired by my family and friends (those few friends I spoke to about it, anyway). For a Pope to be so highly regarded by Protestants is a quite a testament, and maybe even be recognized as a miracle.

I look forward to the time when he will be listed among the Saints, but I am fine with any length of time the Church takes to investigate him. I will still use Pope John Paul the Great, though.
