I want to buy one of the Ignatius bibles.

Should I get the actual bible, catholic Ed?
Os the Catholic study bible 2nd ed. from Ignatius as well?

I would love to have both as well as many many other catholic apologetics and theology books. But that requires lots of money. ") I am very slowly starting to get some books.

Which of these two would be the most recommended and why??

Thanks guys!

that depends on what your looking for.
The Study bible is very good but its only the new testament, The old testament will be along in a few years. I already have an NT commentary so I went for the plain Ignatius Bible RSV-CE2 which is a very nice translation of both the NT and OT

So if you want to study the new testament in some detail the Study bible is for you

If you want a good translation of the entire Bible then the plain Bible is the one you want(it still has the short footnotes and explanations just not a commentary)

God Bless

I happen to like the RSV-CE by St Benedict press (LINK)

It has the following features:

Full Color Presentation and Family Record Pages

Complete Old and New Testaments

Words of Christ in Red

Full color Artwork depicting the Life of Christ

Three Year Seasonal Cycle of Readings

Crisp, easy to read typesetting

Gold edges

Embossed “Holy Bible” and St. Benedict Press emblem on front cover

Gold printing on spine

This is just my preference though.

If you don’t have a Bible at all right now, I would get the full Ignatius Bible. The Study Bible is great, but it won’t do you as much good if you don’t have a full Bible to look up all the cross references the study Bible will give you. Every Catholic should have a copy of the whole Bible; you can get the study Bible later.

On the other hand, if you already have a full Bible that you are fairly happy with, I would go for the study Bible. Until they come out with the Old Testament part of this, the current New Testament study Bible will keep you busy for a while, and you can use your current Bible with OT.

there must be thousands of threads on this subject in this website. And, everybody has a different opinion.

I think the moderators should ban the topic from its redundancy.

I have about a dozen different bibles, Jewish, Protestant, Catholic. If you really do a comparison on them, you will see that every verse is phrased a little bit different, to avoid copyright infringment.

So, looking for “the best” is really tough, because it is so subjective. The copyright laws make it so tough to blend all these together into the best of the best, for example.

I have stated my requirements for the perfect bible once or twice, but it has been a while so here goes.

It should be a good translation, have lots of helpful footnotes and cross-references, meditations and pictures. It should be sold as a book with an electronic copy on a CD, so you can do word searches on your computer.

It should have an accompanying concordance and features much like or better than Strong’s concordance.

It should have notes which illustrate the four senses of scripture that are defined in the catechism of the Catholic Church.

The thrust of this thread is to explore which of the English translations might be the best to use, but, put first things first. There must be something like 7 or 8 Hebrew and/or Greek versions of the Bible, so you should decide (which you will never do, of course) which of the original manuscripts you prefer as well.

Anyone’s selection of any particular bible translation will obviously have many biases and assumptions built into it, so I’m saying, lower your expectations about ths question. There is no Bible which meets my critieria, so I will refrain from any further recommendations.:o

Oh, yes, one more criterion:

There should be a set of CD’s or DVD’s with somebody reading each book of the Bible. The DVD version should have lots of nice photographs or movies accompanying the reading, and there should be nice music there, too.

So, my guess is, MY bible would probably cost about $1000, with all the features I want incorporated into it.

I know this was not on your list but I have The Douay-Rheims with a Comprehensive Catholic Commentary complied by Fr. Geo. Leo Haydock.

It has a nice traditional and extensive commentary. You can also read it on the net.

That’s right; You can find it here.

Why not buy the second edition of The New American Bible. It is the official catholic bible and the lectionaries are based on it.

Too bad that it is the official Catholic Bible.
There are some on this sight, including me, that are not too happy with some of the footnotes. I, for one, would not spend the money on this bible.

Yes, I have a complete Catholic bible. Spanish though. And I think I am more interested in the study bible. with commentary. ")

Yes I do read it on the net. ")

I just prefer the physical bible and I was wondering about Ignatius bibles because I’ve heard a lot about both of them… Just trying to decide which one I should buy first.

You mention the full ignatius bible is a good translation. Is the study bible a good translation as well just that its only the NT with commentary and such…?

thanks.

You can buy this bible. It comes in one volume now. Mine is in 2 volumes. It is quite expensive though but I think worth the price. I have seen the one volume for about $125.00 You might find it less expensive on the net.

What footnotes aren’t you happy with btw?

Sorry. Its the same translation in both the study bible and the full ignatius bible, RSV-2CE. I think amazon lets you have a look inside on their website if its any use to you.

One is the note at Matt.21.7 Matthew misunderstood a prophecy? Jesus taught his apostles all things, I don’t think Matthew misunderstood anything.

Note at Matt. 1:25 leaves the door open that Mary and Joseph could have had relations after Jesus’ birth.

Note at Matt. 3.6 John’s baptism may have been related to the purificatory washings of the Essenes?

These are just a few that I have noted in the bible. As I said , I don’t use this bible much. I like the DR and the Jerusalem bible.

Hope this helps a little.

I think due to what I’ve heard and the posts on this thread I will go with the Study Bible from Ignatius. I am interested in the footnotes, what Scott Hahn has to say, the essays and such.
i will also continue to read the DR bible online.
thanks to all who posted.
