For the married, is it permissible to send intimate photos to your spouse?

Is it ok to send intimate photos of yourself to your spouse? Is it within the realm of marital chastity to exchange such things? Or is it a sin against chastity? I’ve heard that it’s perfectly fine and others say naught. What do y’all think?

Permissable? Sure. After all, you are married.

A good idea? Heck no. Imagine if you forget to delete it and give your phone to a friend to make a phone call. Do want them to see pictures like that?

It’s never really a good idea to send them, via phone or by mail. Things get lost in the mail, texts get misdirected or accidentally sent to the wrong people, or are too easily shared.

What exactly are the pictures supposed to accomplish? I can’t think of anything other than arousal. That sounds like a bad idea when the spouses aren’t in the same place.

Why would you try to arouse someone’s desire at a time they can’t be with you to satiate that desire?

Seriously imprudent. Every digital thing is public in some way. Want your kids to find that on your phone? What about your boss? Showing pics to your priest and OOPS?

Aside from that, it can be a means of objectifying each other, slippery slope at the very least.

I think this is the key. It would be out of the bounds of marital chastity, because rather than loving a person, such photos reduce someone to an object.
So sending these kinds of photos to your husband/wife is a sin? 🤔😳

If it tempts the other to sin, that would be scandal, wouldn’t it?

If the people in question were unmarried, then definitely! But a picture of your spouse? What if you woke up next to your spouse and they were wearing rather attractive pjs? But you had to go to work so you didn’t have to opportunity to enjoy the marital embrace? Would that be scandal? Because now the spouse in question will have to go off to work thinking about how attractive their spouse looked right before they had to leave. Or what about sharing a passionate kiss and a romance embrace before parting ways for a period of time? That could very easily lead to arousal.

I’m in the mindset that it is not scandal to send such things to your spouse. However!.. I’m no theologian so this only my opinion.

Well I did say “If”."

Consider, though, that admiring a spouse in person or a romantic embrace can be nonverbal ways of expressing real love. That makes them a moral good. Sure, they can tempt to sin in the wrong circumstances but that just means the couple has to be careful.

Where is the moral good in the photos, though? I don’t pretend to speak for everyone on this, but I can’t think of a moral good those photos would aid me with that safe for work photos would accomplish just as well and without the same risk. I’d run the risk of objectifying rather than loving, and for what?

I would think it okay. It wouldn’t be unchaste with the person you are married to.
However, I would never do this because it would be imprudent. Anything sent electronically isn’t secure. Someone else could get hold of it.
For the same reason I wouldn’t send sensitive personal informatiom electronically, such as bank account numbers and the like.

Private moments ought to be private.

Anything transmitted over the internet can never be presumed private, and is potentially available to the whole world.

If you follow it logically though, you will realize that is no OK.

Reasons:
  1. by sending the pictures, the spouse is objectifying him/herself
  2. logically, the intimate photos can (and often do) lead to lustful thoughts (which are sinful) and can lead to the sin of masturbation.
Regardless of what people say, it is possible to objectify one’s spouse.

Let’s think of it this way: If your spouse was in jail, what would be accomplished by sending those pictures? You would simply be the featured model in your spouse’s porn.

These kinds of pictures are porn, plain and simple. Even within marriage. They serve one purpose and one purpose only… to “turn on the viewer.” Therefore, they are porn.

I hope this helps.

The way I see it, there are two major issues with this practice:
  1. the technical. Many here have already said it, once it’s on a phone, email, internet, it’s there and can get out more ways than one;
  2. the moral. The problem with this practice, even if it is your spouse, is that it now is taking a very private, intimate thing (your body) and removing it from it’s proper context of intimacy and spousal love (marital embrace). So you are doing something that is meant to be shared together in person and taking it out of context and that should not be done.

@edward_george1 is a priest. Please take note of his post here.

God bless

Rather it is a sin or not, I am no theologian so I can’t answer that. However, I would strongly advise against doing it, as others here have said, in the digital world it’s to easy for those kinds of things to be stolen, sent to the wrong people or others accidentally viewing it. You would not want that to happen to your wife, so don’t do it.
