I can only guess that the occasional horror that the hierarchy felt, being aware of the divine charge to preserve, protect and defend the eternal mystery against all whose efforts, bad or good, might in some manner dilute it. Yet, throughout history, the underlying reasonableness of it all is revealed - that the faith, if not the mystery - be comprehensible to the faithful.
