gilliam,
I’m going back to look over what you wrote, but you are the one who first brought up holding them in perpetuity under the Geneva Convention. Then you point out that we aren’t obliged to follow them. Doesn’t that sound contradictory to you?

As for the Red Cross, their reports aren’t supposed to be public. That’s why Rumsfeld won’t let the UN guy on torture in; because his report would be made public.
Thekla
Since the UN s a viruntely anit-american (and anti-semetic) organization we would be fools to let them in to any faciltiy we run.

If they wany to investigate something how about starting with the Billions they bilked from the iraqi people or thier complicity in genocide in Rawanda.

All of those imprisioned were captured while fighting against US Troops.
Let me remind you that the Taliban were given the chance to continue their existence and governance of Afghanistan. Mr. Bush said give us bin Laden and the others and we’ll stay out. Was he willing to make a deal with terrorists?

“fighting against US troops” should not be a sentence to life imprisonment without a trial. What do you mean we can’t try terrorists? We tried the worst of the Nazis for crimes against humanity and we can’t find a way to try these guys in Guantanamo? We can’t even find a way to charge them with a crime? Rwandans have been brought back from all over the world to stand trial for crimes against the citizenry. How come they can do it and we can’t?

They are exactly the kind of guys you take “down to the courthouse” and make an example of. Too bad we pulled out of the ICC; it would have been perfect for them

Rumsfeld didn’t mention any of that when he said no to allowing the UN expert on torture to bring a team to Guantanamo. But if you want to pick a non-partisan human rights organization, it’s fine by me.

Not in perpetuity. The Geneva Convention allows for the release of prisoners if the holding party wants to release them, and mandates all prisoners be released at the end of hostilities.

Normally, POWs are held until the end of hostilities.

But that is not required by the Geneva Convention. Seems to me it is intended by some to be used as anti-American propaganda (no matter what it says). So as Sec. of Defense, Rumsfeld is right in saying no. Providing anti-American propaganda is not the job of the Sec. of Defense.

We have-the Red Cross

Red Cross investigators cannot declare their findings publicly. Can you pick again?
So? The red cross has been the oraganization of choice for 70 some years for most countries. I think we should stick with them. You evdidently not only want inspections but also want to make sure the inspections are ploliticized.

I am sure you would like the inspections done by moveon.org

I can’t figure out if you want us following the Geneva convention or not. But that’s beside the point. If you don’t like the UN, how about another human rights organization that can report to the public? I’m not fussy. If the Sec of Def and our government have nothing to hide, then it can bear the scrutiny of strong light.

So even if the Red Cross investigators find abuse, they can’t report if publicly. The question is whether or not the force feeding of detainees is a form of abuse. Rumsfeld claims that they are “fasting.” I’ve said I think it is abuse.

How can we know what our government is doing in our names if no one is allowed to investigate? If the Red Cross can’t tell us? You may not want to know what is going on down there but if that’s true you should just say that. But why can’t I know?

Please don’t put words into my mouth or snidely try to guess at which organization I’d pick. I simply asked, since you didn’t like the UN, for the name of a human rights group that could make a public report.

I did name a group and you rejected it . I named a gropup that seems to be acceptable by just about everyone but you.

Sure. I don’t ever think that we should force feed adults capable of choosing not to eat.
Your talking about allowing someone to commit suicide.

If any of the prisioners at Guantanemo died from starvation there would be riots all over the Muslim world and the Left would be demanding the impeachment of George Bush. The idea that the US should sit by and let people under their care starve to death is complete and utter nonsense.

It’s also against Catholic teaching.

Agreed. And that’s the primary reason for the force feeding.

“Under their care”. That’s a nice one, right up there with “abortion provider” in the euphemism dept.

I am not afraid of the truth. If abuses are going on at Guantanamo, they need to be exposed. If not, that needs to be brought out. The Bush Administration should open Guantanamo to all who want to go investigate.

Suicide is against the law and it’s against Catholic teaching. We believe that someone who consciously does it commits a mortal sin. But to my knowledge, most of these guys aren’t Catholic.

If you don’t force blood pressure medication down the throat of someone with severe high blood pressure, are you allowing them to commit suicide? What happened to personal responsibility?

I do not believe that not strapping someone down and forcing a feeding tube through their nose and into their stomach is the same as helping them to commit suicide. When you say “it’s against Catholic teaching,” I assume you mean committing or helping someone to commit suicide. But refusing to force a feeding tube into an adult that has the mental ability to make a choice? You are not saying that’s a violation of Catholic teaching, are you?

All I asked for was a group that could make a public report. Why do you pick the one that can’t?

And another thing. Not all hunger strikes lead to death. As a practice, it has a fairly long tradition. A lot of people don’t even understand the motivation behind Catholic’s fasting and abstaining on Fridays. So I don’t think that a hunger strike should be automatically equated with suicide.

Wow this thread has gotten bizzare. One poster claims starving yourself to death is akin to fasting during Lent and another comapares the US militray to abortion providers!

Meanwhile we have strident demands that GITMO be investigated even though there are no allegations anything is being done wrong-but by Gosh if we investigate maybe we’ll find some more Korans flushed down the toilets!!!

Of course numerous Congressmen , miltary investigators, the FBI and the justice Dept has visited GITMO and found nothing awry but i am sure we need to keep sending people down there until we find something wrong. How about Michael Moore and George Clooney? Ill bet they’ll find something wrong!

A good cause has no need for distortions like this. I compared your euphemism “under their care” (as if Guantanamo were a hospital) to “abortion provider”. Both mask what’s truly going on.
