In the last several weeks such a quantity of ink has been spilled in newspapers across the globe about the priestly sex abuse scandals, that a casual reader might be forgiven for thinking that Catholic priests are the worst and most common perpetrators of child sex abuse.
But according to Charol Shakeshaft, the researcher of a little-remembered 2004 study prepared for the U.S. Department of Education, “the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests.”
After effectively disappearing from the radar, Shakeshaft’s study is now being revisited by commentators seeking to restore a sense of proportion to the mainstream coverage of the Church scandal.
According to the 2004 study “the most accurate data available at this time” indicates that “nearly 9.6 percent of students are targets of educator sexual misconduct sometime during their school career.”

Funny how a study required by Congress & conducted by the US Department of Education which says **“the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests.” is "forgotten???
**
**Could it have something to do with media bias & dishonest & lazy reporters? Mr George Wiegel correctly noted in his recent article “Yet in a pattern exemplifying the dog’s behavior in Proverbs 26:11 (where they return to eat their own vomit!), the sexual abuse story in the global media is almost entirely a Catholic story, in which the Catholic Church is portrayed as the epicenter of the sexual abuse of the young,” firstthings.com/onthesquare/2010/03/scoundrel-times

Perhaps it has something to do with the powerful teacher’s unions & the relatively short statute of limitations that many states have (which do not apply to the Church).
**
There have been a number of cases of alleged sexual abuse by public school teachers here in Oregon where the public schools settle with the defendants using large sums of taxpayer money & the accused teacher is transferred or let go without a conviction. These teachers simply get rehired in another district or state…

2 wrongs don’t make a right, but let’s at least be honest & fair in reporting, especially when children’s safety is at risk!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

This study is important to remember, and I do think that the media is grossly unfair in their coverage and rhetoric.

However, we must remember that people are not as upset about the abuse as the “covering up” of the abuse. If a principal knew a teacher was being abusive, he would most likely call the police and have him fired. Most people are upset that this didn’t happen with church representitives as much as it “should have.”

I’m not saying I’m on their side, I’m just saying that if you bring up this report to someone that has been “catholic bashing”, they will probably bring up the above point.

I think Gary’s point is important. As the old saw goes, it’s not the crime it’s the cover up that causes problems. And, does the fact that child abuse in schools is 100 or even a thousand times worse than in the Catholic Church in any way mitigate the evil of Child abuse?

I’m certainly not aware of any cases where the principal made the victims sign an agreement to keep the facts of the abuse secret.

I can’t even think of anytime a Protestant church imposed such a condition upon the victims of abuse.

If it is a secret, how would you would know about it? 🤷

Several weeks ago I started a thread re: public educators who have been accused of sexual misconduct and other bad behavior that are being paid ‘not to teach’. New York and Calif. are named as states that have such pools of money to pay out to the accused.
Don’t assume sexual misconduct is being addressed in all private & public institutions.
No doubt those who veil themselves as agents-of-God are particularly repulsive and have much to answer for.

I agree also. I stated in another thread of how the media is run by mainly atheist, agnostic groups along with freemasonry and other worldy, secular, liberal special interest groups. Their agenda is mostly today to oust any form of organized religion.

Catholic Church being on the top of the list mostly due to the Bishops standing up against abortion and the health care plan.

Media is not free to begin with. They are highly controlled by eletists with much money and wordly power to determine what gets published and what goes on tv,radio, internet, etc. Catholic and other Christian media can really unveil the truth of what is really going on which makes secular media furious to go and try to smear religiuous organizations.

My stepdaughter’s public high school had one of the wrestling coaches charged with sexual battery to a girl student, but yet 60 days later, the news disappears. Secular school boards have much political clout. Now if there is “No God” in public schools, that means the field is free game as long as the media and politicians keep putting the “snow over the dung hill”.

Many of us have seen the public school students even outside of the property and it’s no suprise of how morality has declined in the past 30 years in the school system.

There are more psychological mind games (much of school administration personnel have degrees even PHD’s in psychyatry, sociology, psychology) to thwart the students and their parents (mostly those with no faith based practice) more from the natural moral law to be put down as like animals in a cage.

The media was mostly responsible for Obama getting the presidency. He is on the air daily like you would think a socialist dictator runs the government. No objection for politicians being on air daily, but when “the veil is pulled”, you will see like old Rome the leaders riding their chariots with a high horse arrogance looking down on people.

Emilys list website putting liberal pro-choice,pro- same sex marriage agendas on women politicians with much clout with public education system to " psychological manipulate" school children toward liberal immoral behavior.

More in time, the only news truth will be mainly Catholic and other Christian media. Old Roman government under Ceasar is probably on the way back like the days of the Apostles.

100 times what? More violent? More frequent? More benign? The article is quite poorly written.

But the issue of numbers is besides the point. What the media is attacking is the church’s apparent inaction after allegations of abuse. Practices like moving accused priests to other parishes do not go over well.

This is because of teachers unions, not the public school institution themselves. Its at least better than the Churches reassigning accused priests.

I grow tired of hearing this falsehood.

In the vast majority of cases the Church was not out to cover-up abuses (though it is true in some small number of cases that did happen). Rather, the Church worked with mental health professionals, the victims and the victims families, and in many, many cases the offending Priests were said to be rehabilitated by the mental health professionals, and in nearly all of the cases the Church kept it quiet for the sake of the victims and their families.

In the many cases in which Priests were said to be rehabilitated, they were often moved to other parishes to be givena fresh start. I personally believe the Church hurt itself by listening to those MHPs, yet can you imagine the uproar from the left had the Church just started tossing Priests our after one unproven offense?

The Church was hit by the perfect storm, and part of that storm was their own mistakes as well. The Church was attacked from within and it took time for it to learn from that, yet most people do not know that the peak of abuses in the USA was 30 years ago in 1980, and that by the early to mid-90s the abuse claims had fallen drastically.

Let us speak the truth.

It’s very hard to reconcile this idea with the fact that in all the cases where a “cover-up” legal agreement has surfaced, it is always the case that the Church is requiring the victims and their families to keep quiet, and it is never the case that victims and their families are requiring the Church to keep quiet.

The Church is bound to be worried about the dignity of the person, even in situations where Priests have already assaulted that dignity. You will never find that in a contract.

I think you americans are generally too obsessed with sex scandals. I dont usually understand the rationale behind your media devoting so much time and energy to such matters e.g tiger woods, clinton / lewinsky e.t.c. You even assign appellations ending with gate to them. Also, your tort laws allows huge financial payoffs to the supposed victims either fake or real. I believe that if financial considerations are removed, we are going to end up with much less and purely genuine ones. In fact, whatever happens to the principle that a man is innocent until proven guilty (or is the priest not a man).

A couple of points. Americans love to read about sex scandals, it is juicy stuff; we are like the British in that regard. American tort law doesn’t allow payoffs to fack victim. The principle that a man is innocent until proven guilty is misstated. The true principle is that during the trial of a criminal matter, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This presumption does not attach to investigation, media reports, or other non-governmental action or to civil tort cases.

One would hope that sexual abuse of children is to be found in the world more than it’s to be in the Church.

Point is, it should NOT be found in the Church at all, let alone among the clergy!! When it is found, it should be dealt with quickly.

The anti-Church media is going to hate the Church no matter what it does. Christ told us the world hated Him and will hate us. No big surprise.

These scandals are devastating to those who live through them. Faithful Catholics feel abandoned by the Church. Some even lose their faith, or come very close to it.

It doesn’t matter to a parent, whose child has been abused by clergy, to know that his/her child is more likely to be abused in a public school. It does matter to the parent that of all places where the child should be safe, the Church, their child has been violated.

One of the biggest heartaches of the clergy abuse scandal in Boston, was the knowledge that the Church just kept transferring abusing clergy from one place to another - and, that contact with children was still allowed.

I can’t believe we still have known abusive clergy being passed around and allowed contact with children.

I want to thank the members of our clergy who are faithful and are trying/have tried to cause this matter to be dealt with by the hierarchy. Also, my prayers are with all of our faithful clergy who are being taunted because of a few bad apples and a hierarchy that doesn’t remove them.

Let’s pray for those faithful Catholics who are in pain, and struggling because of the action of the abusers.

But is it not a matter of truth? If a disease in found in church but is more prevalent in a school, ought not we be more concerned about the school than the church?

You mean you expect the schools to be evil places and therefore we should shrug when it is pointed out that schools are indifferent to the safety of children? What has happened to the Church is a warning that society has become more evil, that we must take nothing about it for granted. As for the schools, the state demands that we surrender our children to them for instruction and that we pay for the “honor.” Not every child is exposed to the presence of a priest but everyone is exposed to a teacher.

You touched on an aspect of this that needs closer scrutiny…the MHP connection. If Bishops, in good faith, trusted these MHPs (and it’s obvious today that they shouldn’t have), where’s the accountability for giving horrible mental health advice?
