I went to Confession this past weekend. I’m very used to the form of absolution that I think every priest I’ve ever went to for Confession has used - until this past weekend.

It wasn’t the typical prayer. I kept waiting for the “I absolve you” part. When he did get there, he said something along the lines of “I absolve and forgive you”.

Googling, it looks like Jimmy Akin would say that’s valid (Absolution Validity – Jimmy Akin). Another site would say no ( http://canonlawmadeeasy.com/2018/05...f-the-priest-changes-the-words-of-absolution/).

So I’m not sure whether I was absolved of my sins or not.

I think you need the words “I absolve you” and “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” in there somewhere, regardless of what other “Filler” is present.

I’d double check that with a [different] priest, though.

Was “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” part of it?

Honestly, I don’t recall. I was a bit flustered. I think it was, but I’m not 100% sure.

OK, so… if it was then the absolution was valid. In other words, to the best of our ability to know an answer (that is, from your recollection), then we can say that we ‘think’ it was. Does that help?
