Former bishop of Cloyne Diocese, Ireland, breaks silence over abuse

Bishop John Mcgee, the former bishop of Cloyne, Ireland, has said he feels ‘horrified and ashamed’ by abuse in his diocese, breaking his silence on the subject since his resignation.

In his first public statement since publication of the Murphy Commission report into the diocese’s handling of child abuse was dismissed by victims, he said: ‘I accept full responsibility for the failure of the diocese to effectively manage allegations on child sexual abuse.’

He made the statement after being tracked down to Cork by the media. However support groups for abuse victims are not satisfied by his statement.

Honestly, I don’t blame the victims for wanting more. Sure, he apologized, but to show others you’re repentant you have to both say you’re sorry and act like it. I feel that he should turn himself in to the authorities on his own free will to truly show his pentinence.

I do applaud him, though, for accepting responsibility. But from is told, it seems like he was only forced to apologize when the media “tracked him down.”

It is very troubling the sex abuse scandals.

I am also so conflicted ethically on Priests hearing confessions about serious abuse and being impotent to protect victims who may be at continued risk.

What I want is not more apologies but an explanation. WHO ARE YOU to have let this happen? What went on here? Did you sell your soul to the devil? Did you infiltrate the church to destroy it from within? Did you protect them because you’re one of them? What exactly makes you tick that you let this happen? That’s the kind of “breaking the silence” I’m interested in.
