Just so you know, a lot of Eastern Catholic rites use crossed arms as the symbol for w ishingn to receive Communion! So. Maybe the EMHC was a Maronite or something…

She may have been temporarily unsure whether you were crossing your arms because you wanted to receive on the tongue.
Something like this happened at my Parish a while ago. After Mass, a guy was asking Father why he wasn’t given Communion, and it turned out he approached with his arms crossed, but intended to receive on the tongue. The Extraordinary Minister must have assumed the person wasn’t receiving, which is what I thought was what that gesture meant as well.

Right. Because, as it turns out, that’s the posture that Eastern Rite Catholics use when they’re receiving the Eucharist (IIRC).

Thankyou @gorgias and @TheLittleLady for your informative replies and corrections to mine, and to all for the constructive and helpful discussion.

Not just that, but when serving in the Holy Place, we keep that posture for most of the Liturgy!

I think Lutherans and Episcopalians picked it up as a sign they weren’t receiving, and it spread to the RCC in the US
