Lots of professional scientists only have MS degrees. Usually academics have PhDs.
well i guess we have a different definition. I see a difference between lab workers, engineers, technicians, etc. and “scientists”. no biggie though
Well, that issue is overblown, IMO. For instance, Michael Quinn tries to play the ex’ed heretic card, but the fact is that he is openly gay, was gay at the time, and that’s what he was really ex’ed for. In any case, look at what has happened in many Catholic universities. Some of the theology departments have at some points been very anti-Catholic places, and the American bishops have struggled to get control back. Same with some “pink” seminaries and the like. Can you really blame the LDS Church for trying to keep their universities from going there
I don’t buy that at all. Quinn may be gay but that’s NOT what got him into trouble. look at that whole situation and read what Boyd Packer said. I see an orwellian rewrite of LDS history directed to be more Faith promoting and hoping that controversial doctrines will just “fade away”. I have no problem with BYU staying “LDS” but not at the expense of the truth and there is a BIG difference between a church college and a seminary.
I don’t. The main issue between them is how to read the Book of Mormon responsibly–not how to interpret DNA studies. I side with the LDS scientists who have spoken up about the issue.
of course any dissenting LDS scientists are now ex-LDS. I think the best reading of the BoM is inthe context that it was explained originally by the alleged prophet who claimed to have translated it. looking at his writings and sayings as a whole on the subject in my opinion makes LGT very unlikely if it’s in mesoamerica.
For using too many emoticons. Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.
guilty 😃
I’m not sure what you think is so difficult for me. Bruce McConkie wrote an introduction to the Book of Mormon that nobody considered “inspired” any more than the footnotes or chapter headings he created. He said the Book of Mormon people were the “principal” ancestors of the native Americans. So what? People have published LGT interpretations in official church periodicals for decades and decades, and it was always considered within the bounds. Why now that some DNA studies support the idea that the “entire hemisphere” theory is bunk (like the LGT theorists had been saying all along,) are we suddenly forced to accept it if we want to stay Mormons?
The boM is supposed to be the most correct book on earth and the apostles and first presidency “oracles of the lord” how can something that important be “uninspired”? once again I think you marginalize the original teaching on this subject.
My problem with the great lakes LGT is that 3 Nephi contains an absolutely stunning portrayal of a pyroclastic volcanic eruption. Eyewitness accounts of these events agree in every detail with the destruction described in 3 Nephi. There are tons of pyroclastic volcanoes in Central America, and exactly none in the Eastern USA.
well the place names are sure interestingly similar to the modern ones. I also find it problematic with cumorah and moroni and the plates to say it was all done in mesoamerica except the final resting place of the plates. the mesoamerican theory also make sit even more obvious the lack of BoM mention of anything that we now know to be characteristic of those pre-Columbian cultures that lived there in large numbers during that time.
Some of Jeff’s stuff isn’t meant to “prove” anything. It’s just interesting to a lot of people, and in my experience he doesn’t go overboard by claiming that it’s proof. He is a good writer, though, and he does a good job of summarizing a lot of issues for lay audiences.
I disagree. i see his work as pseudo-intellectual smoke and mirrors to make those struggling with doubts think there is still a way it could all be true.
Since when? We don’t typically pray to Jesus–he said to pray to the Father in his name–but the commentaries I’ve read on the Book of Mormon all say that when Jesus is standing right there, it’s perfectly natural to worship/pray to him. Again, I think you are trying to impose the strictest and most naive interpretation of the Book of Mormon on us, so that you can have an easier time refuting it. It’s called a straw-man.
typically? when do mormons EVER pray to Jesus? the holy spirit? for years the D&C claimed he wasn’t even a person. no straw man here. I take primary issue with mormons not worshipping/praying to jesus… that the BoM describes it is just part of my reason for claiming that they have changed over time from trinitarians to henotheists.
I’m perfectly willing to believe that LDS doctrine has developed over time–it’s one of our central claims, after all. But the fact is that we still believe in “three persons, one God.” We just think they are also “separate” in such a way that it is legitimate to call them “multiple gods,” as well. So what? St. Justin Martyr called Jesus a “second God.”
oh i don’t think it’s just that at all. it goes to the very nature of God. an exalted man in an infinite chain of exalted men with parallel chains of exalted siblings vs. ONE eternal God.
I get that the Word “was God” (and so in a sense “co-equal” with the Father,) who existed “in the Beginning,” but I’m struggling to figure out where you get the “consubstantial.” If you mean “one nature,” then I’m with you. Can you explain what you mean?
they share the same substance. where one is all are. they are that intimately one. not just in purpose but in physical fact.

This is what I mean. I think that there are extremely rare cases where an abortion might be the right choice. Extremely rare. And so even though I think the abortion laws in the USA ought to be MUCH more restrictive than they are, and I would vote with good Catholics almost all the time on such issues, I get labeled as “pro-choice,” rather than “pro-life.”
well, yeah. it’s kinda like those “vegetarians” who eat fish. you’re not vegetarian if you eat fish! it’s not logical just like it’s not logical to say " I’M PRO LIFE! (but abortion is okay sometimes)" it doesn’t make it seem genuine to me, but i don’t have PhD…
there is a choice, sometimes, in your view which in turn makes you… pro-choice…

Why Me-

Does the Mormon church still feel you are a worthy priesthood member? Please answer me on this. Can you go in a temple?

I even gave the first reading at the last Mass. 🙂 I have stated that the book of mormon has not been proven false. And that is a truth. Nothing to confess about that. i also have an open mind about JS based on my own testimonial experience of praying about the book of mormon when I was 18 years old.
ok whyme,
What is that called? Who authorized that not only an unbaptized person, but one that has not been through Catachism courses… Sorry… I don’t believe you. IF you did indeed “give the first reading”, Shame on the Priest!!!

in Christ

tundramom, I’m with you. I don’t believe him.

I do a good job when I read. And people have commented on what a good reader I am. I think that the priest is satisfied with my work. Plus, I have told nuns that I defend the mormon faith on this board because of the unchristian-like comments I read about the lds church. They seem to understand.
Go back and read my post once again. How well you read, or don’t read, has absolutely nothing to do with the issue. The comments stand; your behavior was scandalous and totally disrespectful. I sincerely doubt the Parish Priest would “understand” if he were aware of the nature of your posts on this board and on the Mormon boards. Furthermore, and please don’t take this personally, you should not be taking Communion in the Catholic Church. Review the Nicene Creed; you are NOT in communion with the Catholic Church by even the most liberal of interpretations. If you were indeed raised Catholic, I shouldn’t have to tell you this.

I think that Catholics are really stealth pro-Choicers, because they preach policies on abortion that are so obviously extreme, unrealistic, and inhuman that even most Catholics simply ignore what the Church has to say.
John 6:66 “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.”

People frequently abandon demanding teachers. That doesn’t necessarily invalidate their teachings.

I’m not asserting the truth of Catholicism per se, just the idea that difficult doctrine, commonly ignored by a faith’s adherents, does not render a faith untrue. Remember the legendary infidelity of the Israelites under Moses?

Did the early LDS allow for abortion in special cases like rape, incest, etc. (even before abortion was legal in the U.S.)?

Did the LDS permit the use of contraception by the faithful before 1930?

Actually Early LDS did not allow any abortions. They considered abortion murder (Many quotes from the Journals of discourses) an unpardonable sin in the LDS Faith. "D&C section 20 “The unpardonable sin is in that ye commit murder wherein ye shed innocent blood” Now when Mormons have abortions for any reason “Abortion is not defined as murder” (First Presidencies General Handbook of instructions) Women who have abortions in any of the legal cases of roe and doe (LDS honor and sustain the law of the land) are not subject to church discipline. Women who have abortions in the mental stress cases of rape, incest, deformity, risk to health(the word that actually creates abortion on mental stress demand where roughly 95% of all abortions nationwide are done using ‘therapeutic’ mental stress see the Buereau of vital statistics records) do so with the consent of the church and believe they can receive ‘divine confirmation’ to proceed with the abortion (Ensign Nov. 1998 pg. 71 Gordon B. Hinckley) Don’t be conned by B Dawgs arguments for the life of the mother it is only one of the 5 cases Mormons kill their own children in. As for the Book of Mormon heres one for B Dawg and friends. Joseph Smith claimed the book of Mormon was the most correct of any book. But later Joseph Smith hung himself with this statement because he retranslated the Bible ( The Joseph Smith translation or inspired version as it is called) In it he corrected verses of scripture that supposedly had been corrupted for example. Matthew 6:38 says “but seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” In the BOM 3 Nephi 13:33 says “but seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” Word for word of Matt.6:38 However in the Joseph Smith correction of the Bible he corrected it to read “Wherefore seek not the things of this world but seek first to build up the kingdom of God, and to establish his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” Point is Joseph Smith blows it bad here because he put the old corrupted version in his BOM and forgot to change it when he retranslated the Bible. He did this many times proving there was no need for the book of mormon "to bring back “the plain and precious things”(1 Nephi 13:35) as he claimed because he blew it and put the old corrupted verses in the BOM time after time. Once again which religion you are in is not asked when women have abortions, all of B Dawgs info is easily corrupted surveys etc. Bottom line Mormons who uphold their leaders and doctrine are guilty before God of the blood of millions of children… Catholics who uphold their leaders and doctrine are guilty of none…

Mormons who adhere to Mormonism sometimes have abortions.
Incorrectly put. Corrected as follows:

Mormons who adhere to Mormonism rarely have abortions (I mean extremely rarely).
Catholics who adhere to Catholicism do not have abortions.
Also incorrectly put. Corrected as follows:

Catholics who adhere to Catholicism do have abortions. They are faithful, believing, practicing Catholics. They are just sensible enough not to give up their lives for such an abasurd theology.

It is possible to look at it another way though:

Catholics who fanatically adhere to Catholicism drop dead rather than have an abortion—which does not help anybody, the Mother or the baby. JWs also drop dead rather than have a blood transfusion, which does’t help anyone either. There is not much difference between the two in this regard.

does anyone watch south park? it’s quite crude, but i did like their mormon episode about joseph smith and think they nailed his theology on the head with their song which goes “dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb dumb dumb dumb…”

here’s the song and it’s free of foul language…

That is an inappropriate comparison. In Mormonism, if somebody commits a serious transgression he gets exed; he can no longer be considered a “Mormon”. An Israelite could not be exed from being an Israelite. The Israelites were a race or a nation, not a church.
Did the early LDS allow for abortion in special cases like rape, incest, etc. (even before abortion was legal in the U.S.)?

As far as I know, abortion and contraception were not an issue in the early days of the LDS Church. I do not recall having come across the subject in my study of the early history of the Church.

also, if one is a “faithful, believing, practicing Catholic” then one doesn’t go against Mother Church and goes against her teachings… to be faithful is to do what is taught even though you may not understand why Mother Church teaches this or that.
get off your high horse…

if the mormon god and mary had sexual relations, how was Jesus born of a Virgin?

dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb…

I am not teaching my children that the lds church is true but I am also not teaching them that it is false. They can decide for themselves since they are now adults. I just know that they support me when I attend the catholic church. Now isn’t that nice?
well it sounds like you just want everyone happy and thats what good parents do. I’m happy for you that your children support you going to church. It can be hard sometimes when family members don’t support each other. 🙂 However, for myself I will always teach my children what I feel is right, they know alot about being mormon since I used to be one… but I’m raising them Catholic because it is true. I feel it is my responsibilty as a parent to guide them in the “true” direction as God would want us to do.

Mormons who adhere to Mormonism rarely have abortions (I mean extremely rarely).
That’s good. One innocent life ended by direct abortion is too many.
Catholics who adhere to Catholicism do have abortions. They are faithful, believing, practicing Catholics. They are just sensible enough not to give up their lives for such an abasurd theology.
Actually, Catholics who have direct abortions cease to be Catholics. They excommunicate themselves. No one’s life is saved by obtaining a direct abortion.
Catholics who fanatically adhere to Catholicism drop dead rather than have an abortion—which does not help anybody, the Mother or the baby. JWs also drop dead rather than have a blood transfusion, which does’t help anyone either. There is not much difference between the two in this regard.
Catholics who “fanatically” adhere to Catholicism may have life-threatening (ectopic) pregnancies treated and are never required to drop dead in order to adhere to Catholic teaching.

That is an inappropriate comparison. In Mormonism, if somebody commits a serious transgression he gets exed; he can no longer be considered a “Mormon”. An Israelite could not be exed from being an Israelite. The Israelites were a race or a nation, not a church.
I wasn’t discussing punishment for infidelity. I was discussing whether or not fidelity to a particular teaching is indicative of the truth of that teaching.
As far as I know, abortion and contraception were not an issue in the early days of the LDS Church. I do not recall having come across the subject in my study of the early history of the Church.
Okay, thanks. Maybe someone who is better informed will respond to my questions.
