I voted for Perot twice and got interviewed at one of his rallies. I liked him a lot.
What was it about him that appealed to you, if you don’t mind my asking? I never quite ‘got’ the whole Perot phenomenon.

Perot got almost 19% of the vote, that’s going to throw things off. I was reading on that 1992 election, Clinton got roughly 43%, Bush in the area of 37%. Neither got a majority. I guess, in some countries, if no one gets a majority, then, there is a runoff between the 2 frontrunners.

I’d not forget, in 1992, Pat Buchanan challenged Bush for the nomination. Buchanan didn’t win any primaries but some of his vote tallies appear respectable if over 30%in some contests can be called that.

I know the “no new taxes” quibble with Bush… that wasn’t that big of a deal for me.

That’s an interesting idea (having a second election when neither side wins a majority; I can see the need for it now).

I was thinking this morning, in the context of Bush’s no new taxes pledge, that ‘the art of governance is the art of compromise’ but ideologues never or rarely see it that way.

I didn’t like either of the main party candidates who were running.
Perot was his own man, successful, outspoken, and kind of like Trump without the, um, personality issues.

Yes, every once in a while you see a candidate like that; normally they don’t win but Trump defied the odds. Kind of a black swan event, in my view.

What I remember about Perot the most was that he was solidly against NAFTA, after that, I don’t remember too much.

I admire the late President Bush for the graceful way he exited the stage of public life. Would that some other former presidents would do the same.

He also said, ‘read my lips, no new taxes’ and then signed a tax increase.

Yeah, that wasn’t one of his finer moments as Prez.

He also had Dan Quayle as his veep, who seemed to provide SNL comedy material inadvertently every time he opened his mouth.

Yeah, for doing stuff when similar stuff was done by a pol more acceptable to journalists was not made fun of so much /rolleyes/

Yes, he did. Seems to me that this is an example of doing what he thought best for the country without putting his own ambitions first. It would be nice if more politicians did the same.

I call it lying to get votes. I wish less politicians would lie to get votes.

Never hear much from George Jr., either. Or Jeb, for that matter.
