Former priest writes book about Rev. Pfleger

OK, everyone lower your hackles and give proper respect to this Catholic pastor. Maybe we should reserve judgment until the book comes out?

"In fact, persuading Pfleger to cooperate for the book was no easy task and took about two decades of coaxing, McClory said. Pfleger insisted that he never wanted the spotlight to shine on him. He wanted it on the causes he championed, including gun control, youth violence and poverty.“I never thought about writing a book about me. I’m living life,” Pfleger said. “I don’t have time to talk about my life. Time is what I don’t have.” But Pfleger said that if anyone could be trusted to tell his tale and place his secrets and shenanigans in the proper context, it was McClory. Pfleger finally agreed to answer his questions.

“Because he’s a former priest and because he was here, and knowing his theological beliefs over the years, I trusted his telling of the story,” Pfleger said, sharing a pew with McClory inside St. Sabina’s sanctuary recently. Pfleger hasn’t always known whom to trust or lean on for support. He possesses a remarkable ability to bring heated critics out of the woodwork. “I was fascinated by the amount of sheer hatred he stirred up,” McClory said. “What is it that causes people — most of whom don’t know him — to think he’s worse than Attila the Hun? Who does he think he is?”

The priest at our parish was transferred this past summer to a western suburb of chicago. He mentioned a few times in the homily that he was a classmate of Pfleger. This helped me understand a few other incidents.

This priest was at our parish for 12 years. I heard absolutely wild statements often during the homilies. For example, the parting of the red sea was a local weather effect during an extended dry period - not a miracle at all. The multiplication of the loaves and fishes was just teaching people to share what they already had. The mana in the desert was insect excrement. It goes on and on. He even threatened a rebellion against Pobe Benedict XVI in a homily. As a result, attendance is down and the budget is far in the red.

Our church was renovated during his two terms. All the statues were removed and never returned. We had nice statues of Mary and Joseph before. No more! Three weeks before this “priest” left us, these statues and another in the school used for may crowning were shipped off site, … quietly.

In summary, you should be very careful with any priest in the chicago archdiocese, especially of Pfleger’s age. They seem to be attempting “reform” from within.

I would question the removing of statues but I was reminded that in my parish folks were not quite sure which saint was memorialized by a particular statue. All that stuff is sort of on the periphery of religion.

By the way, St. Sabina, with the addition of some musical instruments, retains a pretty traditional Catholic church even with Father Pfleger…

I’d guess the good Rev. Pfleger & I might be on opposite poles politically, but I thought he was right-on re. Hillary Clinton’s reaction to Obama’s nomination. I thought he was pretty funny, too.

Father Pflegers 15 min. of fame are over. He was reined in by his Bishop and is back to doing what is by all accounts an exemplary job of tending his flock.

He was only nationally prominent for one incident. However, he has been well-known for more than a decade in this diocese.

I am aware of that and am also aware he is highly regarded by his parishioners. Hopefully he has learned his lesson.

Not to derail this thread but he was WAY WRONG about Hilary. Hilary is many things, a white racist isn’t one of them.

Good, because the priest, despite the views of conservative bloggers, never called her a racist. He was talking about a sense of white entitlement.

He was disciplined for political interference, not for the content of his views.

I have never written a blog and I wouldn’t even characterize myself as a typical Conservative, however can you explain to me how “white entitlement” is not racism?

One cannot expect to win a political race based on one’s race. For instance, Gary, IN, a city 80% black, elected a white mayor about five years ago. Black folks did not have a ‘lock’ on the big chair but its not necessarily racist to believe so…

Just because the US had never elected a black president did not make it abnormal to do so. Some folks thought there was racial entitlement to the office. They were not racist – they were mistaken.

I don’t know what the above has to do with what I said but I must say that I never thought I would have a disagreement with a Black man about comments that I think are racist against Black people! The Media reported it as a racist comment and I would imagine if I did a poll here most would consider it racist. Correct me if I am wrong but if I think that white people are better to lead because they are white than black people isn’t that textbook racism?

You failed to mention the campaign against drinking and smoking (and the advertising of those evils), against the lottery, against youth violence, against gun violence and the pastor’s building of senior citizen housing. He stands out, all right. Around here, that’s called activism.
