Hello! I am an Adventist elder.
I was reading through some of your posts and I was struck with the urge to respond.
. . .I’m interested to read your responses.
In the name of Jesus Christ
Welcome to CAF:)

Regarding the Pope as “God on earth”, please carefully read this blog (in two parts). I hope this and the other responses you from Catholics here will help educate you on Christ’s One Church (not a “system”, btw) which you left:

sacrificium-laudis.blogspot.com/2008/09/our-lord-god-popenot-part-1.html

sacrificium-laudis.blogspot.com/2009/08/our-lord-god-popenot-part-2-postscript.html

Thanks, FC…,

The elder’s remarks were inherently incorrect…the SDA’s so inclined need to recognize objective and truthful information, and not that which is based on something else.

First, let me tell you that the Catholic Church is not a “system”, as you have used it here. You may also be suprised how many Catholics on here are quite familiar with their Bibles, and what they contain.

Question 1. The Pope is not God on Earth, and I am not aware of any Catholic that believes that, so, I’m not sure where you got that. The Pope is the successor to Peter, and goes by many titles, such as Pope, The Vicar of Christ (A vicar is one who represents another and acts as a steward,), Holy Father. His official title is The Bishop of Rome.

Question 2 See Matthew 18:18, “Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven.” See also, John 20:23 "Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained. "

Question 3 Another misconception. Catholics do not worship Mary. Never have, never will. We venerate her, and honor her as the Mother of God (Jesus), but we do not worship her. By the way, there are numerous threads on here about that, I’m sure you can dig up a few.

Question 4. See this answer from one of the apologists here at CAF. It should answer any questions you may have.

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=336622

Hope all of this helps.
I apologize for the “system” remark. I did not intend to offend anyone, but I adhere to the Webster definition of the word. The Catholic church, and my church fit this definition.

Q1 I agree that the idea of the pope being “God on Earth” is foreign to most parishoners, yet it is not foreign to Catholic doctrine. Explain this quote to me:
“Take care that we lose not that salvation, that life and breath which thou hast given us, for thou art our shepherd, thou art our physician, thou art our governor, thou art our husbandman, thou art finally another God on earth.” Christopher Marcellus in Oration addressing Pope Julius II, in Fifth Lateran Council, Session IV (1512), Council Edition. Colm. Agrip. 1618, (Sacrorum Conciliorum, J.D. Mansi (ed.), Vol. 32, col. 761), (also quoted in History of the Councils, vol. XIV, col 109, by Labbe and Cossart).

I’ll supply more if you wish.

Q2 Is it possible you are misinterpreting those vss? I agree that one can forgive someone for offending them; “forgive us our traspasses, as we forgive those who traspass against us.” But could a man forgive the sins committed against a third party, or even against God Himself? No brother. Only God could forgive sins - anyone else who claims the power to pardon sins is putting himself in the place of God - the classic definition of ANTI- (before) CHRIST. Or blasphemy see Mark 2:7

(I’m gonna be banned…I know it…)

Q3 John Paul II openly worshipped Mary…but on another trend …agreed?

Q1 That is not a doctrinal statement, and it is not being presented as such in that context. By the way, the lightministries website is not really a good source for information.

Q2 Sorry, I don’t think I am misinterpreting these. How can you misinterpret John 20:23? He is telling the Apostles they have that power. (I don’t know a verse that can be any more clear.) That power is then handed down through Apostolic succession. Jesus passed this authority to the apostles, and the apostles passed in down, and on and on.

Q3 Sorry, I can’t agree with you on this, in any way shape or form.
JPII did not worship Mary. No Catholic worships Mary. Worship is reserved for Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit. Again, lightministries is really a poor source for your information. Catholics do hold Mary in high regard considering she is the Mother of Jesus. You hold your mother in high regard don’t you?

Catholics believe that those who have gone before us are alive in Christ in Heaven. We ask those that are in heaven with Jesus to take our prayers to him. We are asking for their assistance, we are not worshipping them, and we are not praying expecting them to answer our prayers themselves. They don’t have that power, and we know that. We are merely asking them to intercede on our behalf. The key definition of the word interced is 1. To plead on another’s behalf.

I am going to suggest that if you want to have an honest and open discussion about Catholic beliefs, try using a Catholic source.

Here are a few good sites.

hello my friend. system remark does not offend me. know the english language sometimes can be funny. any how, still waiting on a response from you on my question about you saying Catholics are going to be in heaven. when your prophetess emphatically stated that the Catholic Church is the beast and that anyone who receives the number of the beast for worshiping on sunday is going to be burned up in the lake of fire. have the adventist come to the conclusion that egw is not a prophetess. if so when did this happen? but if she is, how can you an elder state you believe Catholics are going to be in heaven, God fearing or not. after all if egw was a prophetess then she spoke for God. do you disagree with the great controversy? really curious is all. if there has been a change in the way sda view egw. appreciate your time.

**OK? you should really study the claims the popes have made over the years, especially during the Dark Ages. But you are obviously a defender of your church system, I’m not going to argue this point any further. **

Q2 Sorry, I don’t think I am misinterpreting these. How can you misinterpret John 20:23? He is telling the Apostles they have that power. (I don’t know a verse that can be any more clear.) **You seem pretty certain of this. You could change my mind though if you could give me just ONE example of this claim. Just ONE. Please don’t make the mistake of basing such an important doctrine on a couple texts taken out of context. Look at ALL the evidence. Jesus claimed the authority to forgive sins and was scolded because of it. Of course, most Pharisees were not Spirit-filled, but they had this principle right:
*Why doth this man speak blasphemies? WHO CAN FORGIVE SINS BUT GOD ALONE? ***Mark 2:7

Q3 Sorry, I can’t agree with you on this, in any way shape or form.

What is lightministries…? I searched our Adventist church ministries, and it appears nowhere. Nonetheless…If there is a way I could show you pictures of John Paul II bowing to a figure of Mary…would you be convinced? How about his complete devotion to her as he credited her for saving his life? Anyway, that’s neither here nor there. Here’s my advice:
“…fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters”
Rev 14:7

Why would you do this? “…we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” 1Jn2:1. Only Jesus Christ is qualified to intercede on our behalf: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ” 1Ti2:5. Oh beloved brother, I plead with you! Look to none other than the Saviour, for “he ever liveth to make intercession” for you and I (Heb7:25).

***“And call no man father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven” ***Mat23:9

Lovingly fighting for you

Hello Benidict.
Please do not be offended by what you have perceived as condemnation of all Catholic people. The Seventh-Day Adventist Church has always regarded Ellen White’s writings as inspired and authoritative, yet subordinate to the Bible.
To answer your question…it is not the church that saves, but Jesus Christ. We are not saved by virtue of our membership to any church; not the Catholic church, or Adventist church, or any other. We are saved by our personal confession of Jesus as Lord and Saviour. That being said, please note the following verse:
*“And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues” *Rev18:4.
Notice that God has people who are actually in “Babylon.” God has people who are in spiritual “confusion” and are going to be called “out of her” in these last days.
If anyone is condemned, it is because they have knowingly disobeyed the clear instructions in God’s word, therefore actually turning away from Him.
In the end, there will be no denominational division, only those who obey the will of God, and those who have turned to man-made traditions. The Mark of the Beast is received on the forehead or the right hand…some fully believe the artificial Mark to be authoritative, and others simply accept it to maintain the right to buy and sell. If we truly love God, then we will fully comply to His will, whatever it is no matter what changes it may require in our lifestyles.
You should know that the Catholic church indeed claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday:

“Question.-Have you any other way of proving that the church has power to institute festivals of precept?”
"Answer.-Had she not such power…she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority.”
-Rev. Stephen Keenan, A Doctrinal Catechism, p. 174.

‘Of course the Catholic church claims that the change was her act … And the act is a mark of her ecclesiastical power and authority in religious matters.’
-C.F. Thomas, Chancellor

By the way, did you know that Ellen White wrote good things of faithful Catholics? She also wrote that most Adventists would not make it to heaven…
Allow me to clarify my stance by offering you an example…Martin Luther King Jr was not “pro-black” he was for equality across the board, for all races.
I am not “pro-adventist” or “anti-catholic” but I do point away from the contradictory imagination of men and towards Jesus Christ my Lord who loves us all and would have us ALL be saved.

Here’s my last advice:

I have studied them thank you very much. As I stated, the post you provided is not a doctrinal statement, and wasn’t presented as such. If you read the bottom of the quote you supplied, you will see a very key piece of information you are overlooking. "Christopher Marcellus in Oration addressing Pope Julius II. It is not the Pope making the declaration. Why is that so hard to understand?

Q2 Sorry, I don’t think I am misinterpreting these. How can you misinterpret John 20:23? He is telling the Apostles they have that power. (I don’t know a verse that can be any more clear.) Again, I don’t know how the 2 references I provided can be misinterpreted. You have 2 gospel writers saying the same thing, although worded differently, and you don’t think this is good enough? What type of example are you wanting that could be any more clear?

Q3 Sorry, I can’t agree with you on this, in any way shape or form.

Rev 14:7

When I googled your reference in question one, it came up as the first listing which was lightministries. Then again, if you’re using an SDA website to learn about the Catholic Church, that isn’t a good choice either.

Many Catholics bow in front of a statue, but that does not mean we are worshipping the individual the statue represents. Statues are used as reminders of the individual, what they taught us by their earthly life, and to help us stay focused in our prayer at that time. Kneeling is also a very common posture for prayer within the Catholic Church.

There is no doubt that JPII had a devotion to Mary. That is far from worshipping her. You have heard of the 3rd secret of Fatima right? Speed version is that it foretold of the Bishop of Rome being assasinated. Expressing gratitude for her intecession in the incident is far from worship don’t you think?

Catholics believe that those who have gone before us are alive in Christ in Heaven. We ask those that are in heaven with Jesus to take our prayers to him. We are asking for their assistance, we are not worshipping them, and we are not praying expecting them to answer our prayers themselves. They don’t have that power, and we know that. We are merely asking them to intercede on our behalf. The key definition of the word interced is 1. To plead on another’s behalf.

Look to none other than the Saviour, for “he ever liveth to make intercession” for you and I (Heb7:25).

Simply put, do you ask others to pray for you? It is the same thing. We believe that those in Heaven can pray **with us to the Father **. As I stated above, we believe that those who have passed away are alive in heaven with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and can offer their prayers along with ours to them.

***“And call no man father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven” ***Mat23:9

“Jesus said, “And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven” (Matt 23:9). Several sentences later he said, “Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers” (Matt 23:32). So clearly verse 9 was not meant to be a prohibition against the use of the word “father” for anyone other than the first person of the trinity. Rather, it was a prohibition against the misuse of the title.” You have to use context, and not a single verse. Quoted from the ask an apologist portion of this website. hello my friend, thank you for your wonderful response, it really helps. its kind of hard to offend me any way, im a former truck driver and a current sodier with the united states army. so nope, not going to be offended by somthing so trivial as a word lol! thank you for clearing that up about egw. have heard differnt things from different adventist ive been blessed to know over the years. have also read some of her books, such as child guidance(a very good read for new parents) the great controversy and steps to Christ. if i am to understand, your church believes that sometime in the future they will enact a sunday law. that everyone must worship on sunday. am i correct? if not plz correct me. personally i dont see this happening. another thing is, the sabbath is actually sundown friday when the first 3 stars are seen in the night sky, to sundown saturday when the first 3 stars are seen in the night sky. it is a beautiful time and the jews still hold to it. dont know if you are familiar with the jewish customs, but they are beautiful. the ritual that goes with lighting the shabat candles the prayers that accompany this act, which by the way is the privelige of the wife of the family. it is a holy time. my question would be, if your going to celebrate the sabbath, why are you not obeying the precepts set forth by the jews for this? it seems that if you are going to follow it,then you should follow all the rituals and not just a protestant version of satuday worship services. i know of some Catholics who do study judiaism and do follow some of the rituals, who then complete it with mass as a means to get the whole picture, Christ being the fulfillment of the law. also if you read origin, he will constantly teach about the tradition handed down from the apostles, such as infant baptism and such, so yes, apostolic authority being handed down, the Church did have the right to Change the day of worship from the sabbath to the Lords day. also if you look at the mass and study it. you will find that it is the closet worship service that resembles temple judaism. have more to write but i gotta get back to work. Love in Christ brother,

Hello again Benidict.
I’m sorry I haven’t had a chance to respond. Even now I’m pressed for time. I want to explore your questions a bit more…perhaps later tonight…?

For now I just wanted to say something to you…

I feel a real kinship towards you, your manner of response isn’t argumentative or patronizing. You seem to be very open and honest…I almost sense Christ’s spirit in your response. I’m happy to dialogue with you (not that I haven’t enjoyed other comments, its just that I’m not here to argue or offend. I’ve learned that sometimes its best to say what needs to be said and then keep my mouth shut…:blackeye:) LOL!!

But also you mentioned that you’re a soldier in the US Army.
I have tremendous amounts of respect for our soldiers. Personally I have a few family members in Iraq…and other friends on the way.
Anyway…I wanted to thank you for protecting our country.

:blessyou:

hi spirit sword. good to hear from you again. understand about being pressed for time! lol! i can be argumentative at times but i try not to be. none of us are perfect yet. also i have had many positive relationships with adventist in the past and have learned a great deal from them. also have enjoyed many of egw’s writings. although i do not agree with her thologically, i do however think she had some wonderful insights into health. raising children, etc. also i think the book steps to Christ was a wonderful publication. do appreciate any time we can spend on this subject, do not have to agree to learn from eachother. Love in Christ brother:)
