With regards the issue of abuse in the seminaries in the Chile, the McCarrick, and now the Argentina case (I am sure I missed a couple), I do not think the Holy Father knew, but I think it was a willful ignorance. When someone, such as Vigano with regards to McCarrick, told him, I think he turned a blind eye and did not want to look into the matter any farther. With the Chile case, he initially said that the accusations were calumny. This was his “gut” reaction to what he considered adult “indiscretions”. Likely the same scenario here. It seems apparent that in the early years of his pontificate, he just did not want to make homosexual activity in seminaries an issue. In this regard, he was probably like many Church bishops and cardinals, it was simply the dirty little secret that was happening and it became a case of ignoring the deviancy. After all, it was not abuse of minors. That he had hoped, had largely been dealt with. Indeed, in this country the evidence suggests it had. And why start up a new church scandal so soon after getting past the last one?
That is what I believe to be the case. We have been saying for quite sometime, we need to know who knew and when. It seems to be apparent, a lot of people knew, but no one investigated and so they could all say it was rather hear say. And others, simply just did not want to know.
