***Fortnight for Freedom starts Thursday, June 21 thourgh July 4, 2010. Our church is offering daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, fortnight novena, prayer cards, and daily rosary. The parish is also encourging all to write their congressmen.

Included in Sunday’s Church bulletin was a very informative letter by Peter Feuerherd, director of communications for the Dioces of Camden, NJ. It contained a lot of information about what we are fighting against and for which is not covered in the secular news.

I’d copy it but don’t know how. But if you google his name, it will take you to the article. :):***

Is this the article you are referencing:

This attack on religious freedom has evoked the unanimous disapproval, sanctioning civil disobedience / non-compliance, call to get-out-the-vote political action, and call to formal prayerful action by all the bishops and their mouthpiece, the USCCB.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the strength of the response for the unborn were just as unanimously intense - you know, sanctioning civil disobedience in defense of life by impeding access to abortion clinics, formal call to get-out-the-vote no-nonsense political action, and a call to formal Catholic-sponsored “40 Days for Life” prayer vigils with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament - unanimously supported by all the bishops through their USCCB?

We could start with baby steps in courage by simply requiring that a weekly prayer petition be made a Sunday Mass in defense of life.

Defense for religious freedom immediately stirs a Catholic hornet’s nest, but defense of human life takes 20 years after Roe v Wade for a “Priest for Life” movement which has mixed reviews by the bishops?

Time for some real course corrections, IMO.

It’s a step in the right direction. Perhaps we can “ride the wave” from this and get folks’ minds in the right place. Though I’m honestly not sure anyone is interested. I put up a post asking people for help finding places that would do pregnancy care, child care, adoptions and what-not to provide for panicking mothers considering abortion, and I got one response. One.

btw, love your sig.

That’s a wonderful idea. We have Catholic Charities in our area. Do you have anything in yours?

We do, but it seems to be focused on the homeless and mental health aid. Not that these are not issues that need addressing, of course. They just don’t help in this peticular ministry.

I’m very surprised. I thought Catholic Charities was big in adoption and offering services to these women. Where does the Pro-Life group refer pregnant mothers?

St Louis Post Dispatch ran a story on the F4F, featuring it prominently on their website. And its not a wire story. 🙂
On Thursday, Catholics across the country will amplify what is an already loud outcry over the federal government’s so-called contraception mandate.
With rallies, marches, lectures and special publications, the U.S. Catholic Bishop’s Fortnight for Freedom campaign will seek to galvanize formal Catholic opposition to a rule announced in January by President Barack Obama’s administration that says religiously affiliated institutions, such as universities and hospitals, must soon include free birth control coverage in their employee health insurance.
{Archbishop of St Louis, Robert] Carlson sent every pastor in the archdiocese a plan for this weekend, encouraging them to show a DVD of the archbishop’s speech from the March rally in Jefferson City, include a religious liberty insert in their church bulletin, issue religious liberty prayer cards downloaded from the archdiocese’s religious liberty Web page, and “preach about the importance of religious liberty.”
Katie Pesha, executive director of communications and planning for the archdiocese, said staff had begun planning the campaign as soon as the mandate was issued in January.

Let us hope and Pray that this current battle with the Government will assist Our Bishops in separating themselves from the body politic in the US. Maybe, just maybe They will learn that you cannot befriend the worldly powers and expect a different outcome other than what we have seen in the past centuries.
St. Thomas More, St. John Fisher, St. Thomas Becket are clear examples of what happens to The Church when we fall out of step with the prevailing political rulers.

“[11] Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. [12] For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places.” Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians, ch. 6

Archbishop Lori’s homily received a standing ovation on Thursday. I’m so glad I attended the Mass. 👍

It would be better for pro-life missions to have this intensity, though I must admit it is difficult to protest abortion clinics, and those noble souls who do so are limited in what they can do. They are on safe theological grounds to trespass and block clinic entrances, though this form of civil disobedience means federal prison sentences.

Every parish I’m familiar with locally supports the 40 Days for Life campaign.

I think the Church has remained consistent - though not with the energy of the present HHS mandate response - that a position that supports abortion is inconsistent with Catholic teaching, and those who publicly support abortion are in danger of excommunication. I am surprised that excommunications have not taken place publicly. Perhaps they already have but are kept private as a pastoral matter. But you’re right, there’s not the same energy. It’s the difference between a 2-year-old fight and a 40-year-long war of attrition.

You’re missing a lot of history. The Church I grew up in the 1980s was full of agitation against abortion. This was the time before the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act in 1994, and during which demonstrations outside clinics - pickets, prayer vigils, infertile couples begging to be allowed to adopt the unborn child, as well as attempted blockades and near-riots - were only common. During this time, battles in the courts were fought over whether a 40-foot-ban on protests in front of the clinic door hampered protesters’ freedom of speech, or whether it was protected speech or religious expression to silently hand a brochure to pregnant women going into the clinic.
I’m very surprised. I thought Catholic Charities was big in adoption and offering services to these women. Where does the Pro-Life group refer pregnant mothers?
Catholic Charities is likewise under attack in many states for refusing to sponsor adoptions to same-sex couples. In Illinois, for example, Catholic Charities has entirely withdrawn from sponsoring adoptions rather than be compelled to provide services to gay couples.
