Fox News and the Pope's Visit - What do you think?

(Aside from Shepard Smith’s mis-speaks…he continued them today, calling the kneeler Pope Benedict used this morning an “altar”…he tries…I still have a soft spot for Shepard).

Perhaps non-Catholics are catching it on FOX. I have to say, I LOVE EWTN, but Fox has actually been covering a lot more of the Pope the EWTN from what I’ve seen - perhaps their budget is slightly larger. 🙂

I find myself watching Fox more than EWTN when it comes to the live coverage, and watching retruns on EWTN to hear Fr. N. and Raymond. You can tell Raymond is in his glory and is in heaven covering the Pope. Even though his Shakespearean background is in full swing with his words, inflections, etc., I can’t help but love him!

On Fox, I was worried Lauren Green would be doing most of it ( their “religious correspondent” - a non-Catholic who has written about the wonders of the Reformation), but they have actually brought in a few people who actually know the Catholic faith and many reporters have been sharing the stage. The anchors/reporters are doing better than expected too - aside from a few mis-speaks like “the Pope will deliver Mass” or “the service is about over”, and poor Shepard Smith pronouncing “Papal” with a "short a’ instead of a “long a”, (aagh!) etc.

I think Fox News has given our Holy Father and the Catholic faith the respect it deserves. Please send them a thank you note if you’ve been watching them at all and appreciate their work. Bravo for FOX and EWTN!

I thought Lauren Green converted to the Catholic Church this Easter.
 
I looked at CNN’s website this morning and saw article headlines about the sex abuse scandal and the Pope calling for peace. I didn’t see any headline mentioning his call to help the most indefensive of all – the unborn.

I didn’t watch CNN’s coverage, and I didn’t delve further into their website, so I can’t be sure of what they didn’t cover, but unless I see/hear further evidence to the contrary, it appears to me that CNN chooses to focus on the Pope’s statements which support their views, not the ones which are against them.
 
Watched EWTN almost exclusively. Great coverage. Fr. Newhaus and Raymond Arroyo were great. Truly experts in background info. I love Fox News and Shepard Smith too but didn’t appreciate his comment at the end of the Yankee Stadium Mass, as his grandmother used to say “Those Catholics sure know how to put on a show!” There’s been 500 years of division and it’s now cultural as well as religious. We can’t expect overnight changes but the Pope’s visit will go far for renewal and getting a lot of people quietly interested in learning more about the church. Some people just cannot think outside of their box, e.g. the Pope is ostentatious, rich, etc. The ostentation comes from Catholocism’s ancient Roman heritage. He’s likely not rich at all. Popes and priests don’t own much at all. The church takes care of them. The serve when and where the church places them, somewhat akin to the military. They get stipends but don’t own much property at all. Too bad some didn’t see the love and respect Catholics and the world has for its successor to St. Peter but could only criticize without knowledge-based critiques of theology.
 
Fox did a great job. I have to admit, I had been trailing away from being a Foxfan but I have new respect for them after the Papal visit.

I think that’s totally untrue! Where did this person get his facts from? I think these people are conjuring up numbers just to spite Catholics. I’m sick of it, personally. I’d like to see someone defend that count! Now!:mad:

I agree. Fox did a really great job throughout the whole Papal visit. Even though I really like Fr. Neuhaus, some times his and Raymonds comments were going on when I wanted to hear some of the Mass yesterday, but overall, both networks did a really great job. The Popes visit will be something that will be marked and remembered for years to come. Maybe he’ll help turn this country in the right direction.
