I just heard on Fox News Channel that Bishop Skylstad has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was at the time (30 years ago) under the age of 18. Bishop Skylstad denies the accusations.

Does anybody have an article that they know of reporting this incident?

Let us pray for the Bishop and all involved.

Here is a link to the news:

From reading the article, it appears that the accused improprieties happened before he was ordained, and it also seems that this accusation may not be legit, as the accuser says abuse happened at a place that the Bishop has no record of being at.

Anyways, pray for the Bishop and those involved.

What a mess…

Think about this…if Skylstand were to step aside, even temporarily…the vice chair is Francis George…who is embroiled in a sex abuse mess of his own involving one of his priests.

Franze:
I think this is false, thanks.
At worst, seems hard to prove…of course, I always have a problem with years and years old allegations.

Even if not, it just creates one more cloud where the church doesn’t need it.

There needs to be laws made to punish people who falsely make these types of allegations. Right now they can be made with impunity. Some are now using them to further an agenda.

There are laws for that sort of thing…false and malicious prosecution comes to mind.

But, the defendant is put in the position of having to ‘prove’ something, so it isn’t often used.

The courts will sort it all out.

Famous last words…😃

I, too, think these allegations are false–but I would think that a statute of limitations would apply somewhat here?

The statute of limitations should never be used in cases of abuse, just as in the cases of murder there are no statute of limitations.

Not in many states when in comes to “civil” suits. Pennsylvania, for example, has no legal recouse for the falsely accused. There need to be criminal consequences for malicious false accusations.

Well, this is a kind of “connect the dots” exercise - but

Bishop Skylstad was invited in 2003 to give the Annual Priests Retreat in the Diocese of Orange by Bishop Brown, just after the scandals broke.

Bernard Francis Cardinal Law was one of B. Skylstad’s Principal Co-Consecrators as Bishop

The accused is presummed innocent until proven guilty.
Except in the case of priests and bishops. They are assumed to be guilty until they prove themselves innocent.

Sadly in this day and age, the accusation alone does so much harm that when you’re inocent it’s hard to rebound from the dammage done.
