Fox's 'Family Guy' goes too far; file a complaint with the FCC

I see a difference between SP and FG. SP definitely has a track record of blatant anti-Catholicism…out and out attacks on Catholic beliefs. I believe the Catholic League has had a number of issues with South Park over the years.

I watch a lot of weird documentaries…operations, and such. Gross things, perhaps. My husband thinks I have gone crazy… Oh, and I watch The Real Housewives. lol Sorry, what can I say.😛

But part of why I stopped watching SNL, is the boring humor. How many times can people mock Bush? Gosh, that is old. It was never even that funny. I think that nudity will eventually be on prime time viewing hour…on regular channels like cbs, abc, etc…it’s just a matter of time. Complacency only needs time to work best.

I thought SNL got boring, too. Lots of politically correct stuff.Just not that funny anymore.

I have to say that I think South Park is probably more friendly to religion than Family Guy. I’ve never seen FG, but I know that it’s creator is an atheist and very liberal. Both Matt and Trey have said they believe in God(Trey says he’s religious, and Matt says he’s not.), and they are both libertarian /Republican. I find liberal humor to be more mean spirited to that with which they disagree.

South Park in no way singles out Catholics. If you listen to the commentary for Cartoon Wars, both creators say they were outraged that Jesus can be made fun of yet violence erupts when Mohammed is depicted. They don’t believe any group is above criticism.

I also heard that they had outraged left wingers calling them saying something like"You can’t make fun of us.We’re liberal!" Like that was supposed to be sacred& off limits.🙂
 
Well - ok now.

I have not been able to look at the show in the OP because I can’t view stuff at work. I just watched it, and as a FG fan I have to say that this episode really is repulsive. 😦

I have the first two seasons on DVD, they are funny, witty, and well written. But they are nothing like this. Irreverent, yes, but not this.

Wow.

Ok - I see why folks are all bent out of shape by this one now. I’m still not in favor of the government deciding what I can and can’t watch, but I understand now why many viewers are going to be turning this off, I will probably be one of them.

Too bad too, because I really love Stewie. 😦

What did Jesus bring to the table when he ate with sinners? He offered them something. Something they did not have.

Did Jesus tell parables? What were they about? The good Samaritan, the sower of the seeds? They were illustrations about how we should treat our neighbor and how the Word of God is spread among men.

I suggest any Catholics reading this go to their Bibles and read what it says about nakedness, and especially prostitution and fornication. About corrupt communications coming out of your mouths.

Catholics should not walk up to people and say, “Hi. I’m better than you and here’s why.” What did various Popes and Saints tell us? Out of love for our neighbor, we should tell them the good news of Christ. Tell them about what He did for all of us. All of us, not just priests and religious, should evangelize. It’s not an option.

As we become more like Christ, we need to walk in the Spirit, saying true things, not profane things, not gossiping and backbiting. If we model Christ, we do not model the world. We live according to the Bible, not according to the current fad.

When I was in Christian ministry, you know what I found out? Most people – people I never met before – just want somebody to listen to them. To know someone cares about them, even if it’s just to listen.

Catholics are told to be good examples to each other so that our brother doesn’t stumble. And if he does stumble, that we should restore him in kindness, not for ourselves, and be careful that we do not fall into weakness.

If people firmly believe they want to watch something on TV, I’m not trying to stop them. But I will complain. I will explain why depictions of profoundly dysfunctional behavior degrades the heart, mind and spirit.

Hey, that may be true, but I remember the Catholic League having recurring issues with that show. Maybe they have stopped since Bill Donahue got on their cases. 😉

It uses a bunch of idiots to espouse immoral actions and less than intelligent thinking…and by doing so is actually presenting what is wrong with society. It is not saying…hey, these guys are intellectuals and what our society should be like. It is saying this is what ignorance and stupidity does. I think, in reality, Seth MacFarlane is an absolute genius.

I’m wondering whether the same posters would have accused Catholics of doing the wrong thing and promoting bigotry if they watched All in the Family (and Archie was Catholic wasn’t he?). I wonder whether they would have tried to get that off the air as well…

I agree totally with this.

In fact, interestingly enough, all the “liberals” and “sinners” that I know have never watched this show. They don’t find it funny.

And all the people I know who DO watch this show are the conservative Christians who DO find it funny.

Isn’t that strange?

They can’t stand Bill Donahue. He was parodied in an episode where he tries to become the Pope.

I must admit…that part of that episode was sooo funny.I didn’t enjoy the other catholic jokes but that was perfect.
 
I agree with those who say if you don’t like it simply don’t watch it. If they were really pushing the envelope and enough people stopped watching it it would eventually get taken off the air. That’s one of the beauties of capitalism (and it doesn’t have many). Just like if you don’t like a certain store or company, don’t buy its products.

I agree that at times Family Guy crosses a line–don’t we all?–but I also think that it’s obviously satire of modern life and is actually presenting a plea for us to return to the conservative-moderate lifestyle. That’s what the song at the beginning says, doesn’t it? “Where are those good ol’ family values on which we used to rely?” Good question! WHERE ARE THEY? That’s what this show is presenting–life in the U.S. the way it is (a satirized version), and it’s showing us the unattractiveness of this culture and pleading with us to PLEASE not act this way in real life!

Please don’t tell me I don’t know what satire is. I do. Thank you very much. I do have an advanced degree…Satire doesn’t mean that you do what that episode did. It went, not just too far, but beyond too far. I actually appreciate good satire. This wasn’t it.

I’m sorry, too, Cat. I jumped to conclusions, but I’m sure you can see why.

I actually used to like and watch the Simpsons–though I didn’t watch it all the time. I don’t watch it anymore, because, well, we don’t have tv reception 😉 and after so many seasons, I doubt it’s as good 🤷 I don’t know. I think there were Simpsons that went way too far, though none jump to my mind right now. I liked All in the Family (Archie was protestant–Carol O’Connor was a Catholic). It was never vulgar. I don’t think satire and pointing out the absurdity of a situation has to be handled with vulgarity. They don’t need to push the envelope. They just need to write better.
