I’m sorry, too, Cat. I jumped to conclusions, but I’m sure you can see why.

I actually used to like and watch the Simpsons–though I didn’t watch it all the time. I don’t watch it anymore, because, well, we don’t have tv reception 😉 and after so many seasons, I doubt it’s as good 🤷 I don’t know. I think there were Simpsons that went way too far, though none jump to my mind right now. I liked All in the Family (Archie was protestant–Carol O’Connor was a Catholic). It was never vulgar. I don’t think satire and pointing out the absurdity of a situation has to be handled with vulgarity. They don’t need to push the envelope. They just need to write better.
It doesn’…you are 100% right about that.

But many people like it…so whatever…more power to them
😊

I think that some Christians are too quick to condemn satire. Sometimes they just don’t understand it.

I agree that at times Family Guy crosses a line–don’t we all?–but I also think that it’s obviously satire of modern life and is actually presenting a plea for us to return to the conservative-moderate lifestyle. That’s what the song at the beginning says, doesn’t it? “Where are those good ol’ family values on which we used to rely?” Good question! WHERE ARE THEY? That’s what this show is presenting–life in the U.S. the way it is (a satirized version), and it’s showing us the unattractiveness of this culture and pleading with us to PLEASE not act this way in real life!
Please don’t pour water on people and then tell them they’re not getting wet. Family Guy celebrates perversity. It’s bad. It’s wrong. Catholics, or anybody else, should not watch it.

Peace,
Ed

That is only your opinion, not official Catholic teaching. 😉

Freedom of speech: I can write to FOX and complain about their show, just like they can put entertainment on television - even if the entertainment is offensive and unappropriate. The FCC determines what entertainment is, not your or my Christian beliefs or morals. Why? Because America isn’t a Democracy: it’s a Republic. And a Republic is ruled by the Law.

If you want offensive television shows, radio stations, websites, and movies to sink, than do the following:

A) Abstain. Don’t watch the show, listen to the station, visit the site, or see the film
B) Beef. Write to the advertisers (TV and radio), host sites (Internet), producers (film): tell them you will cease buying their products, buying their services, and supporrting them if they can continue to support such-and-such a show, station, site, or film
C) Charity. Pray, pray, pray for everyone involved in the matter

When a TV show, radio station, website, or movie loses its audience and its money, it gets cancelled. And you’ve contributed to making the world a better place!

Are you kidding? The FCC is controlled by politicians who are controlled by big business and the networks anyway!

I suggest turning the TV off or changing the channel… Family Guy is part of the adult cartoon phenomenon that started with The Simpsons.

Use your DVR to record shows that are more family oriented and watch those. Block the channels that show objectional programming so your kids can’t tune in.

Raising a big stink or boycotting sponsors of this trash will only draw attention to the show and make more people want to watch it.

If you don’t like the show, just don’t watch it. Getting government involved is the worst idea. If you want government to legislate morality, then Catholicism will always lose.

Idk how people saying they will call the FCC cant understand this…

I watched and I thought it was histarical.

If you don’t like it don’t watch
just don’t come here and wine

So show me the ex cathedra statement made by the Pope disallowing anyone to watch this.
There needs to be something in the CCC for every single every day occurence that we might face, that we need to make a judgement call on, in order for us to do the right or wrong thing?

It’s not written in the CCC, that we shouldn’t go to Hooters, for example…do we need the Pope to tell us we’re wrong to go? Really? The doctrine of the Church is there for us, as a foundation…not to list every possible thing we’ll come in contact with during our day.

Common sense and our conscience should be able to tell us when something isn’t edifying to Christ, BASED ON what we have learned from Mother Church.

If you want to watch a show like this, go ahead…but don’t say that the Pope would be happy about it simple because it’s not ‘written’ in our doctrine somewhere.

``Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.’’ (1 Thess. 5:21-22)

``Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.’’ (Rom. 12:21)

whatevergirl, I appreciate your passion and zeal for righteousness.

But the problem with a viewpoint like this is that everyone’s idea of what is sinful will be different.

For example, I personally do not drink alcohol, and if I were Pope, I would take steps to declare the consumption of alcohol a grave sin and decree that henceforth, all Catholics will no longer consume alcohol, and that those who do are in danger of hellfire.

I’m serious. I truly think that alcohol is just awful. I see no good in it at all. I still cringe when I see Catholics drinking it. I would prefer that they didn’t. I laugh at beer commercials, but I would prefer that they be taken off the air.

Others would declare certain music evil (e.g., Wagner). Or certain clothing styles. Or certain sports (e.g., figure skating) due to the skimpy attire. Or certain leisure activities (e.g., sitting around doing nothing).

The Church does make some grave sins crystal clear (abortion). But mostly, they teach guidelines and leave the practical applications up to each believer.

I don’t think it’s clear-cut at all that shows like Family Guy are sinful. I think it will vary with each person. Many people can watch the show and just laugh at the funny stuff–and there is funny stuff. The Star Trek portion of the show was simply a hoot.

And I personally don’t buy the argument that we are supporting evil by watching the show. Unless we are buying the products advertised and writing letters of praise to FOX and buying the Family Guy merchandise, how are we supporting the show?

lol, me righteous? 😃 That’s funny, cat. I’m not trying to be, just stating that garbage on tv, that brings us down to a different level of humor, etc…isn’t all that Christ-like. I do plenty that isn’t Christlike, and I’m a work in progress…we’re all sinners, as we know.

I was just saying that we should use common sense with some everyday things, where it isn’t spelled out by our Church.

Re: alcohol, I drink wine on occasion–Jesus drank wine. Why would you mark that as grave matter, if our Savior drank wine, Himself? Or are you speaking of beer, vodka, etc…

I am beginning to think there are some in this thread that think Family Guy = pornography.

lol I think I’m still confusing this with SP…
My sentiments are for SP, and the likes of SP.
Basically immoral, junk humor that preys on making fun of everyone, more often, Christians. That ‘type’ of humor, I should say.

Actually whatevergirl, I think you are levelheaded and fair in your posts; however, I do think that there are some who view FG as bad as pornography. It’s not only sinful to laugh at those jokes, it’s intrinsically evil. I think if they could, they would add a paragraph into the CCC for FG and the likes…

I think the reason why FG does not bother me most of the time is just that, generally speaking, I do not get offended very easily. I could be completely wrong, but I suspect that those that are so offended by this show get easily offended about other things in their lives too. I think reactions to this show says more about individual personalities than how good a Catholic he/she might be.

It’s your opinion that it is junk. If you’d watch you’d realize that there is a moral to most of the episodes, and they do not make fun of Christians more than anyone else. They don’t even target specific religions. They mock extremists. In Passion of the Jew it is a Catholic priest that comes across as the voice of reason when Kyle is told by his friends that he’s responsible for the death of Jesus and needs to make up for it,

The drinking thing is another thread, and there have been plenty of threads on CAF where people prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am utterly wrong–but I still believe the way I believe about alcohol!

Just like you do about FG and SP. It’s part of our individuality.

I agree with Nicollle that there is a lot more to shows like Simpsons and Family Guy than is obvious from a cursory viewing. They have a lot of good messages for a bad culture.

But I also recognize that many people, especially Christians, can’t manage to sit through the shows because the “jokes” offend them too badly.

I’m like that about alcohol. I know intellectually that there is no harm in alcohol (it bothers me to even write that). But because of my background and family upbringing, I hate the very smell of alcoholic beverages, and I have a very hard time having fellowship with Christians who are drinking them. I feel…honest now…I feel like I am sitting in the midst of a sin den. I can’t think of any good thing about alcohol, and through my mind runs all the bad stuff about it–the dead innocent motorists, the families split, the pickled livers, etc.

I’m sure that’s how you feel when you watch shows like FG. You just can’t see any good in it at all. And I see lots of good.

And I think that people ought to accept us for our “weaknesses” as long as we don’t try to force them to think the way we think. It’s just a good thing I will never be Pope! (I’m a woman.)
