Gosh, you must really like that show.

I don’t watch it that much more, really. Or, at least, not on a regular basis. If I catch a episode, I laugh at the parts which are “secular nonsense,” or that which pokes fun at pop culture, and conscientiously ignore the rest.

I’m just playing the devil’s advocate in this thread.

I don’t watch much TV, though. Especially not during Lent. I’m trying to give my senses a cleansing from too much multimedia.

I take no issue with re-evangelization, but the manner which it’s being presented in this thread turns me off as a devout Catholic, much less somebody who long ago left our pews because an aversion to apparent fundamentalism.

And there it is. I have noticed that a lot of the threads lately (especially in Family Life) look suspiciously like fundamentalists wrote them. If you boycott everything that you disagree with then what are you going to do for entertainment? What foods are you going to eat? Are you going to have a job? Can you get a car? Oh no, don’t get Girl Scout cookies! While I sort of see the point (I grew up fundamentalist) I don’t see how you can possibly boycott everything that you don’t agree with. Oh, and if you want to boycott the advertisers that promote FG, you kinda have to watch it. Seems to me like that defeats the entire purpose of the exercise.

And seriouly be careful getting the gov’t involved. That might come back and haunt you.

I was just teasin’ ya… You make very valid points…I think there is much we need to do, to clean up the media as Catholics and leave behind a legacy for our youth, that mocking people shouldn’t be considered entertaining. Or porn, or anything else that rips the moral fabric of society. I used to be one of those who would say…‘eh, just don’t watch it.’ But so many people are watching this, and it’s not just these cartoons, it is the news, the bill mahers of the world…we need to stop supporting this junk as Christians.

If not us…then, who?

You know who I blame? Every single one of you on this thread who have said they watch this C*RAP and even BOUGHT THE DVD’S. Hello, YOU are the problem.

We don’t have cable, we don’t have any regular tv coming into our house. This is why. This show is tasteless and your participation in watching this show is not helping morals, faith, youth, culture, etc. Please take responsibility for what you view.

I find the show funny. You can disagree. That won’t make me stop watching. I and my boys are able to differentiate between a cartoon and reality. (and I not only allowed them to read Harry Potter -shock, gasp, horror! - I actually read it with and to them!)

There is probably a lot about my parenting you would disagree with…I allow my teens to play some M rated video games, they have watched some R rated movies -rated for violence, not sexual content -(all have seen Passion of Christ) - [of course, one is now 17 so he can legally view them in theaters], and we watch Adult Swim together at night - FG, SP, etc.

They go to a Catholic high school, they are uber involved in church, one has led retreats for junior high kids, all lead and/or teach VBS in the summer, and they participate in the youth groups twice a week…They all have a very vibrant faith life. They all have excellent morals in real life.

No one is making YOU watch it, so don’t. But don’t tell others what they should or should not watch.

I fight all the big evils too. It doesn’t take all that much to complain to the FCC.

If you want to solve problems look at root causes. I submit this type of programming is dumbing down the masses and is a kind of dope that keeps us senseless.

It is my right to complain and I will continue to do so.

And if you want to discuss censorship I will start by asking what Catholic programming is there on the networks?

So what you’re saying is “it’s not fair that FG is on but there is no catholic programming unless you have cable”? Are you serious? I’m sorry but I don’t need catholic programming on TV to be a catholic…would it be nice-very! Again, be carefully what you wish for! If the Fairness Doctrine is passed…if there isn’t Buddhist, Islamic, whatever else programming on also, EWTN might just disappear…

And I have the right to tell you that this show is morally depraved. While it may be “just a show”, that is no excuse to allow filth like this on prime time television. You and others want to watch it, fine, you have that right. It has no redeeming value to it. I have the right to tell you that.

Well, aren’t you special. I’m waiting for the redeeming value of this show? You have no idea about my parenting values. But this episode of this show was morally depraved. Why do I not have the right to say that this show is a load of hogwash? It mocks for the sake of mocking. It shocks for the sake of shocking.

I think making people laugh CAN be redeeming. It can also be harmful. There are many jokes out there that might make you laugh–at the expense of others. Is that redeeming? What we say has power and can hurt.

I personally find South Park the funniest when they are mocking things and issues close to my heart because I get all the jokes and it makes me take a look at the subject in a different way. Since I realize they aren’t singling me out I can laugh at myself.

I don’t laugh at those type of jokes, atleast I try not to. More people should do that.

I’m not holier than thou, nor do I take myself too seriously. I do take the moral decline of our culture VERY seriously as I have 6 children that will be part of that society all too soon. You may think that makes me crazy or whatever, but I’m fighting the culture war in a very serious way. I just can’t believe the justification for watching this junk by Christians.

I do apologize that this was a bit snarky, but I can’t believe there are serious Catholics that think this show is great family viewing…

It’s time to reject moral relativism. My brothers and sisters in Christ - do you have a Catechism? A Bible? Do you know what’s right and what’s wrong? Will you teach that to your kids?

If the answer is Yes. It is time to ignore the I’m OK, You’re OK idea that ‘no one can decide.’ We need to choose to do the right thing every day. We need, as Catholics, to be as one Body in Christ. All the outside world has is: Gee, I don’t know. Or, Nobody can tell me what to do.

I find the ridiculous humor the redeeming factor. You have EVERY right to say this show is a load of hogwash…just as I have every right to enjoy it! We disagree on what constitutes entertainment, and THAT IS OK! That is what is great about the whole “freedom of speech” thing - we can actually freely express our opinions! What we DON’T have the right to do is squash another’s.

(And please don’t post long, drawn out poems…I don’t read them!)
