The Vatican said Saturday that a bishop ordained in China this week without papal approval had acted in defiance of the Holy See and was automatically excommunicated.

Well that was pretty straight forward and easy enough to understand.

It wont change the attitude of the leadership of the so-called "Peoples" Republic of China, though, will it!

This is very easy to understand.

The Bishop knew what he did was wrong, so I do not feel sorry for him/

It is illegal for a Catholic in China to belong to a Catholic church which recognizes the authority of the pope. The State authorized “Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association” is the only government approved church for Catholics. And the government sponsored association does not recognize the authority of the pope to appoint bishops.

If a Catholic desires to remain faithful to the pope, he must belong to an underground church.

Well, the Chinese authorities do recognize a good amount of the clergy Rome has appointed (basically it amounts to, after the Pope appoints the bishop, the Chinese Government saying they were the ones who appointed him). So for most Catholics there, attending, say, Beijing Cathedral isn’t a problem.

The Church also recognizes the difficult position the faithful are put in in China and is lenient in allowing them to receive Sacraments from this Chinese pseudo-church since for many, there is no other way to receive them.
