Fr Brian D’Arcy: Vatican must take some blame for abuse

Why? Why does the Vatican have to take blame for the abuse of Priests? The Vatican does not teach that Priests should abuse anyone, or abuse their authority as Priests. Individual men choose to do sinful things. We must all be held accountable for “our own” actions. If a thirteen year old boy gets caught shoplifting, should the father be arrested for raising a criminal? This is just more slander being aimed at the Church.

Yes, like blaming Jesus for Judas…

I didn’t bother to read the articles, but many people have said that the Vatican knew about alot of it and didn’t take action.

However, to speak of “The Vatican” as if they are one small, elite group who handle all of the Catholic Church’s problems like the Fantastic Four is pretty silly. Are there some individuals who are or were in the Vatican who may bear some guilt? Quite possibly. Does the evidence suggest that everyone in the Vatican was hiding something? Hardly. These accusations are most commonly hurled at both Bl. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, but those assertions have been shown time and again to be false. The worst JPII may have been guilty of was naivety, in the case of one particular Cardinal.

Father D’Arcy has been censured by the Vatican. Regardless about reporting of the sexual scandals in the Irish Church, it is about time that someone high up in the Church has called a dissident priest to account. It is not proper for an ordained priest to air the church’s dirty laundry to a largely unbelieving public. It just gives secularists and anti-Catholics more ammunition to attack Holy Mother The Church, and lends credence to their false beliefs…
This whole tsimmis has nothing to do with “free speech”, but with obedience. The “Free Speech” issue is just a smoke screen to hide the fact that this priest is sowing discontent amongst the faithful and is violating his vow of obedience to the head of his religious order and his ordinary.
He has a choice: to be a journalist or to be a priest, PERIOD !!!
Cardinal Ratzinger said it very well before becoming Pope: “Perhaps we need to be a smaller, but faithful Church”.

The only reason I posted this thread up is because another was pulled because the source was a blog, which doesn’t comply with forum rules…

I wasn’t responsible for the other thread…

Anyway I’ve heard Fr Brian first hand at Mass and was on the verge of walking out when he referred to JP2.

It was about JP2’S apology to women, and Fr Brian had to bring it up at Sunday Mass saying " it’s about time too."
I didn’t think it was appropriate to use Mass as a stage to air his views, nor did I think it was appropriate to attack the Supreme Pontiff as if everyone in the audience agreed with his views, I certainly didn’t, I mean he’s been going on about this stuff for 20 plus years on TV and newspaper and pulpit, enough is enough…

If the Vatican does not ‘micro manage’ hundreds of thousands of dioceses and hundreds of thousands of priests around the world then why should it should take blame?

*In an emotional interview on RTE’s Marian Finucane Show this morning, sixty-seven-year-old Fr D’Arcy said that if there is secrecy, and no questioning mind within the Catholic Church, then no child will be protected. *

Yes and I think the vatican and CC are now fully aware of this since the 90’s. So, what is his problem, does he now want to run the church, does he think the leadership is not good enough by his standards? It’s the ‘ego’ that I find astonishing with such liberal priests, there is no humility of obedience to the church, it’s just me,me,me.

This is his latest column for the ‘sunday world’ associationofcatholicpriests.ie/2012/04/focus-on-faith-which-binds-us-brian-darcy/

**Some, though not many, argue that the Catholic Church should change its rules because the people have spoken. It is is vital that we deal with the facts and don’t ignore them. This survey should help us to focus our dialogue.

Others are convinced that ’ la cart Catholics’ are the real problem. They argue that because so many believers favour changes to structures and regulations, the Church must instead stick to its guns and dump those misguided ‘dissidents’ out of the Catholic Church altogether, Rome should then fight a rearguard action using the might of the ‘Real Catholics’. For these ‘Real Catholics¹’the church is a club with its own rules and regulations. If you don’t like the rules, get our of the club. Priests like me, for example, should have ‘the party whip withdrawn from them’ as one prominent Catholic woman so smugly* put it on a radio programme recently.

Obviously this ‘real catholic’ must have dented his ‘ego’ a little bit there - referring to her comment as smug.*

5 priests have been silenced for their liberal views, the thing about bringing up the child abuse makes it look as though they are being silenced because of this rather than views on women priests gay marriage, etc.
it’s spin plane and simple
fr Brian Darcy on rte yesterday talked about disagreeing with the nuns also being silenced on their views in the USA yet porned scorn on the fact he and has his fellow road travellers are called liberals while refferiing to the vatican as the pharises

Maybe they should hand out badges at mass, if you’re a ‘real catholic’ you get a blue one and if you’re a ‘liberal one’ you get a red one, just so that we can sit away from each other in different sections.

I mean, the dissent in the church these liberal priests are causing is woeful at best. For Fr D’arcy to call a radio caller, ‘a real catholic’ ‘smug’ because of her view that liberal priests could leave, is not the way I would expect a priest to behave. Maybe I’m naive but I thought they’d have more self control with their remarks, especially a ‘journalist’ priest.

Seems like he has hit the self-destruct button and just doesn’t give a dam about what his views do to himself or the many people he drags along with him…

Obedience (Holy Obedience) has been a virtue of many of the Saints throughout history, God requested it in the Garden of Eden, and we all know the mess that followed…

We must put aside all judgment of our own, and keep the mind ever ready and prompt to obey in all things the true Spouse of Christ our Lord, our holy Mother, the hierarchical Church.
–Saint Ignatius of Loyola

“The Devil doesn’t fear austerity but holy obedience.”
– St. Francis de Sales

I can only assume priests may ‘work’ outwith their priestly duties, but hosting a music show on radio, writing a weekly column (in a very smutty paper I might add), is this what priests should be doing? Possibly, they may find work outwith the church, I assume so as the Vatican has not told him he has to stop completely. Can you envisage St Padre Pio acting like this, who at one point was told not to practice mass in public, which usually took him 4-5 hours and he obeyed without complaint - hosting a radio show and writing comments in a newspaper each week?

St Padre Pio was asked to change from having his back to the people to facing them, and he did it without blinking…

**But listen, my daughter, believe not lightly and trust every spirit, for Satan is enraged and will seek to deceive thee. Therefore do nothing without the approval of those who guide thee; being thus under the authority of obedience, his efforts against thee will be in vain, for he has no power over the obedient.”
