Have you read the Parable of the Good Samaritan? I think it makes quite clear we have responsibilities to our neighbors and their well being.

What about Redemptorists? I hope they are “real” Catholics because i attend a Redemptorist Parish. I would hate to find out they don’t qualify according to some guy on CAF.
Yeah…a shame…I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he has a chip on his shoulder that caused him to not think through his comments.

Not to mention that now some influential GOP Congresspeople are implying that the Chaplain should not be Catholic. The chair of the “Freedom Caucus” wants a Chaplain with a family. I think he is a Baptist and is not exactly being subtle that he wants a non Catholic Chaplain.

I am not giving up my entitlement check, and the GOP doesn’t have the guts to try to eliminate my entitlement.
It may not be the GOP who cuts you off. It just might be reality.

Then who you gonna yell at and blame?

Hold up. I just read another post claiming that the congressmen were complaining this chaplain didn’t have time to provide pastoral care. Now they want a chaplain who literally won’t have the time to provide pastoral care?

to good old tried and true Republican moral values,
Which incidentally happen to coincide with being Catholic. And that’s what scares a lot of people on CAF…

PS—I know of a Jesuit priest who is pro-free market…

The Dems are no more willing…my emtitlement checks will continue. Im confident nobody, left, right, or center has the guts to deprive me.

I know if i ever need to find a true beacon of morality i can look to the Republican Party.

Reality is not somebody or nobody. It’s a set of circumstances that are unavoidable and you are definitely hurting your cause with your dedication to the Democratic Party.

And if push comes to shove, you’ll find they will not be there for when they can’t use the force of government to give you other people’s money.

Other people’s money?..perhaps but those other people owe me my entitlement payments.

The word “entitlement” is deliberatly used as a perjorative. Social Security and Medicare etc. are public insurance policies. They are only entitlements because you paid into them and are entitled to benefit from them.

Well, Andrew, one day that money may not be there or worth the paper it’s printed on.

What then?

You could argue US currency and the currency of much of the world is arbitrary and subject to being devalued by investors if some event occurs. It is a very complex subject that I don’t fully understand, but the dollar or the euro or the pound or the yen could technically crash in value if some sort of market event happens. It is in flux all the time, just generally not by large margins in a short period.

Speaker Ryan said repeatedly there was much more to this than his prayer, none of which we are privy to.

Just because the man was a Priest doesn’t make him correct in this situation. He may have in fact been treated unfairly (and may have been deserving of a replacement), but he was handled legally, and ultimately, that is all that matters.

Folks chime in (I have done it before) too often on this site as though they have insight into things they cannot possibly have insight into.

My thanks to all who have replied!
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Fr Conroy has rescinded his resignation and Mr Ryan has reappointed Fr Conroy to the post which he has ministered in for the past seven years.
I will continue to pray for both men and for our politicians…it is surely needed!

No, not surprising at all! I feel sorry for poor Fr. Conroy whose name has been unfairly maligned for praying a pray that took no sides. All he did was remind folks that everyone deserves to be treated fairly.

Don’t know if anyone has posted it yet, but a new source states that Ryan has backed down and Fr. Conroy S.J. will remain as house chaplain for the completion of his term which I believe ends at the end of this year.
