Don’t know if anyone has posted it yet, but a new source states that Ryan has backed down and Fr. Conroy S.J. will remain as house chaplain for the completion of his term which I believe ends at the end of this year.
Speaker Paul Ryan yesterday reversed his decision to force House chaplain Fr Patrick Conroy to step down .

I heard that some guy from Speaker Ryan’s office suggested to Father Conroy that it might be a good idea to go with a non-Catholic chaplain. Way to stand up for the Faith, Mr. Speaker!

Fr Conroy should shake the congressional dust from his shoes and move on.

We need a Dominican or a priest of Opus Dei who will literally kill themselves hearing confessions,
Wouldn’t be much for them to do, as the party’s standard bearer during the 2016 campaign said he never needed to ask for forgiveness, because he never did anything that called for it.
Come on. Trump is not Catholic, nor is he a member of the House. The Chaplain is for the House, both parties use the Chaplain.

However, it is understandable how non-Catholics (in both parities) might want a Chaplain from their own religion. After all, if I was in Congress, I would be wanting a Catholic one instead of a Protestant one.

I also strongly believe that there had to be something going on here which will never be public (either out of Ryan’s respect for the priesthood or for confidential/personal reasons).

However, the handling of this was terrible, esp with an aid telling Father it was time for a non-Catholic Chaplain. Now that Ryan has reinstated him, I’m sure Ryan will explain the full reasons why so Father can fix whatever lead to the org decision.

That doesn’t mean that was Speaker Ryan’s opinion.

No, not surprising at all! I feel sorry for poor Fr. Conroy whose name has been unfairly maligned for praying a pray that took no sides. All he did was remind folks that everyone deserves to be treated fairly.
I’m sure, there was a lot more to this than what is public. We will never know for sure. But, Ryan has reinstated him and I’m sure Ryan will let Father know (privately) what all the real issues were so Father can make any necessary adjustments.
