Of course I believe Fr. Corapi when he says the accusations are completely false. He is scheduled for al all day event - a Lenten Retreat with Fr. Corapi in Dekalb IL this coming Saturday, Mar 26th. Does anyone know if “Administrative Leave” means the event is cancelled?

It is more than just a sin. It is a sin against chastity which is integral to the priesthood and religious life. I do not think his religious community (Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT)) makes vows but they still make the promises all priests make at their ordination.

Also as it was an employee there can be the problem of sexual harassment.

And further, if he has fallen back into his addiction to illegal drugs.

There is a lot here that needs to be checked out.

I will reserve my judgement until the facts come out (if they ever do) and will pray for both Father John and his accuser.
Why put him on administrative leave without knowing anything one way or the other? They can’t investigate while he is still active in his ministry? To announce this to the world without knowing much is in my opinion irresponsible and coming close to a witch hunt. This should have been kept quiet until facts were known one way or the other. They pulled this kind of stunt with 20 something other priests in (I believe it was) Pennsylvania without knowing anything…on accusations alone. Bad move, pretty much as bad as protecting them upon more concrete suspicions of pedophilia.

My question is how easy is it to simply just accuse a priest, bishop or religious life of these things and then they get the boot? Seems like all to easy of a strategy for someone who hates Catholics. Is this the new thing that can now bring down any religious since the church now has a zero tolerance towards certain claims. Seems way to easy to me. All one needs to do is simply lie and write a few bishops etc. Or is it more like a 3 strike your out deal? I’d like to actually know what really protects the priesthood? I also wonder if this fear is what keeps alot of them quiet on certain moral issues so that no one is offended. This seems to be a huge loophole does it not?

YEP, HUGE. First of all, the accusations alone are enough to tarnish a reputation. Fr. Corapi preaches the TRUTH in the CHURCH OF CHRIST. My H said to me this morning that he was not surprised by this. Anyone of his notoriety preaching TRUTH is most likely in jeopardy.

To be fair, it was Fr Corapi himself who made all of this public. He posted it on his website.

It cant be found either in the media, nor to my knowledge did his superiors make this public. The accuser also has not be public about this.

Only he has.

What choice did he have when they “temporarily” slapped the cuffs on him? How in the world do you explain why you’re gone for a length of time? Looks like he didn’t have much of an option unless he wanted to make something up, which of course wouldn’t be ethical either.

Of course the accuser is not saying anything. She wants to be “unknown”. She writes a letter to a few Bishops and this is what happens? The more I think about it the madder I get.

I’m sure he has to make it public when people will eventually wonder why all his shows are pulled from ewtn and catholic
radio as well as to question why his events are magically canceled. It would hard to keep quiet about this I’m sure. If someone were to accuse you of something that was false and you had thousands of people who followed you would you not have to state the truth? Corapi on his own behalf has stated the truth that he believes that it’s false. If he’s found guilty then yes ok he’s guilty and also guilty again for lying to the public stating his innocent. Let’s pray he didn’t do that. Somewhere after this smoke clears there has got to be room for mercy one way or another. Just like any other priest who has failed to be what they are called to be.

Has EWTN pulled all of his stuff?

😦
I have been trying to find it…cannot…maybe a wait and see. They probably still have him listed in his regular program spot on their site, but that doesn’t mean he will air. I would be very upset if they did…he has not been proven guilty of ANYTHING YET!!!

It appears they have. I’ll find out tonight on the program guide 8pm est and also coming up the next few days. I know that his august event has now been suspended and it’s still unknown of what is going to be of his lent retreat next Saturday. No one knows yet for sure. One positive thing is his web prodcast from his website called our Sunday homily is appearently still going. He is still preaching the gospel as of yesterday and said nothing of his issue. He spoke about the gospel readings and not himself. I wonder why he can still upload videos on the Internet and preach to the public, but he’s not allowed to preach this august in Boston Massachusetts. I also know he was working on his autobiography scheduled to be released this august. Perhaps he will write us the details of this event going on. That is, if the church allows him to release his book…

Good question. I would think administrative leave would only apply to live broadcasts or appearances, not things that are already taped and aired at a later date, but ???
The Lenten Retreat in Dekalb would probably be cancelled, you might actually find info on his website.

It sounds all so odd.

His AUGUST event? This is only March. Why are they suspending something that will not be taking place for 5 months? Hmmm…how long does this kind of thing take to investigate? Marie is right…this is all so very strange.

His website says nothing about it. It appears that the venue is still selling tickets but maybe they haven’t revised their website yet. I guess I’ll have to wait until tomorrow and make a phone call.

Yep, that’s what I would do.

Ticketmaster.com is still selling them. I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens here. It’s a shame how because of this everything is turned against him in a click of a button. If someone accused the pope or a higher up of the same things do they have to be put on leave too just to be safe? Why are there not any protections for priests against this?

I can’t help but wonder how the posts would be different if this story had been about a priest that is not as well known as Fr Corapi.

There is a thread in the Spirituality forum were a poster complained about his pastor for owning a BMW and an iPhone and then gave other very vague reasons why he disliked this pastor. People jumped on the band wagon in denouncing this priest pretty quickly.

I also must say this. The Church and Fr Corapi’s religious community (SOLT) are in a no win situation. If they do as they have done and this shows to be false everyone will be quick in condemning them for their actions yet if this was not done and it came out to be true and there was other cases that occurred after this one was reported everyone would be quick to condemn the Church and the religious community for not doing anything after the first report.

Priesthood is not a right. No one has a right to be ordained, no one has a right to act as priest after they are ordained. There is a thing called obedience.

Fr Corapi did make this public, the Church and his religious community did not. We only have one side of the story, the Church and the religious community may not make a public statement, they surely will not give out the names of those involved due to privacy.

Someone asked what Fr Corapi could have done other than make this public? He could have kept silent. He could have stated that he was taking a leave. There is a lot he could have done only one of which is makeing this public.

Again, as I said, I will wait to see how this plays out but I will pray for all those involved.

I think you make a valid point, but Fr. Corapi is still a human beings subject to the same failings as anyone else. I know for me injustice is the hardest thing to take. I do not know if I could have kept silent, even if I knew better.

The Presence Radio Network, which gets it’s Fr Corapi material from EWTN has said that for now, EWTN has pulled his material pending the outcome of the investigation.
