Its not as ominous as it sounds. In order to licitly perform public ministry a priest needs “faculties” from a bishop/superior. “Administrative Leave” = “priestly faculties removed.”
It simply is a technical way of stating Fr. Corapi is not allowed to perform public ministry at this time.
Thank you for that clarification. Much appreciated. 🙂

I agree, that story, if accurately related, just sounds downright fishy to me. Why after 25 years? Why if no more transgressions? Why if everybody legally consented?

To blame it on an atmosphere of hysteria and overreaction seems a bit of a stretch.

I heard that cd just this last week. The girl was 17, the priest in question was new, perhaps 23-25. So it was an underaged issue.

I think its very important to point out that an investigation IS underway

Having an investigation is the proper thing to do.

To claim Fr Corapi is being treated unfairly is, IMO, and unfair statement in and of itself.

The only thing that I have found troubling is the purging of his materials for the time being. The pulling off the EWTN Religious Cat self all of his recorded materials.

But perhaps that some how falls under the “removal of his priesthood faculties” componant.

Is there a legal fund for Fr. Corapi? Can we urge him to file a libel lawsuit in return for these accusations (assuming they are groundless)? Does he have his own representation? Can he have a personal lawyer?

I think these policies leave the Church wide open for extortion. There is a line between hiding abuse and protecting our priests from blackmail and extortion.
It’s really not our place to be rallying for any litigation for either party. As much as some of us admire Fr. Corapi, we the bystanders are not privy to the facts. It’s best that we pray for both Fr. Corapi and his accuser, and for justice to be done.

You’re right. She made it public when she involved somebody else, i.e., Bishops. If anybody thinks she doesn’t want money they’re deluded.
Just as we should not automatically assume an accused priest is guilty we should not automatically assume that an accuser is only out to hurt the priest, the Church, and after money.

Okay, that’s certainly a little different, thank you for the clarification. I would agree I don’t see what good is served digging up an event after 25 years, especially if there were no other incidents or areas of concern after that first time and given the exact nature of this incident.

This accuser may not be out ot hurt the Church…but the media is! The Catholic Church is despised more than any other. And, who knows if any of these allegations are not fueled by a hate of the Church…because of whatever hurt that was inflicted by some priest down the road. But, on the whole, I believe the devil uses the media to bring down Her Holiness by smearing more of these allegation s than in any ohter faith, etc…

We need to pray for Fr John and all priests who suffer tremendously from all of this.

"More Clergy Allegations? Strike the Shepherd - The Sheep Need to Pray

It is written, ‘Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.

Consider the crisis of sin and failure the Church is presently walking through and the reactions often fall into one of two camps. Either there’s a predator in every priest, the Church is an evil villain and celibacy is surely to blame, or there’s nothing to do but weep and wring your hands, and perhaps leave the Church, disgruntled and demoralized, looking for perfection somewhere else.

There is a third response – a much better one – but it requires a lot more trust and courage. It is the response of the faithful who have not lost faith."…

I agree that this individual case, on the surface, appears to be a sad one. However, the US Bishops lost the “right” to make resonable exceptions when it was exposed that many bishops had ignored/covered up/transfered so many accused priests.

At the end of the day, priestly ministry is for the service of the Church not the individual priest. If an individual priest’s personal sins become public and cause damage to ability of the Church to effectively minister then the priest cannot have faculties.

I’m with Hosdog on this.

And in the end, I still want REAL victims to be able to come forward. REAL victims need to know they won’t be lynched for being a victim that won’t stand for their treatment. We can’t get into a mode, of he’s so awesome that he couldn’t possibly do such a crime. A mode that we were clearly in as a society years ago, that allowed for abusers to take advantage of poor policy.
I’m a victim who did come forward after the priest who abused me was arrested for abuse (long ago but he had very recently confessed in writing) of someone else. He wrote a note to his victim suggesting they continue a sexual relationship, it was not an apology, and the victim took the note to the police. I talked to a detective and the archdiocese. I had no evidence after all this time and basically I had tried to talk at the time but the adults around me were not supportive. I don’t have the same anger at the Church that a lot of other people do b/c this priest was caught embezzling money shortly after he abused me and was told to leave the priesthood. However the archdiocese really couldn’t do anything other than take my report and they seemed skeptical so when they asked for details I provided some but didn’t follow up b/c I could tell they were inclined to dismiss the whole thing. I have a mental health history and would not be viewed as credible so it wasn’t worth trying to meet with anyone. The impression I got was that they didn’t want to hear it. So I didn’t get a good feeling about them but OTOH they did help put the guy in jail by announcing his arrest at every Mass for a while, to encourage people to talk to the authorities, and they did kick him out so I don’t have a really bad feeling about them either.

I didn’t ask for money. I think one thing that motivates a lot of people to ask for money is that many people need counseling to get past this and in the US counseling is really expensive and too often not covered by insurance. I think if psychotherapy were covered at the same rate as other medical treatments (which would be controversial b/c it is expensive) you wouldn’t see as many requests for money b/c the Church could refer people to high-quality, low-cost psychotherapy which at this point is often hard to find, unfortunately.

I hoped that by coming forward I would provide moral support for the victim whose case went to trial. I never met him but I hoped that hearing there was someone else (and there was at least one other person) would be supportive.

I wish the ecclesiastical authorities were as eager to suspend and fumigate the well known infestation of homosexual activity in seminaries and among the clergy, before they willingly alert planet Earth that Fr. Corapi has been suspended because of accusations of “behavior unbecoming of a priest.”

Also, if he is presumed innocent until proven guilty, why are they treating him as if he’s been proven guilty? EWTN pulling the plug on all his shows? Is there anything heretical in his shows? The only thing he could possibly be guilty of is being a sinner.

The reality is that spiritual enemies are targeting our good priests with wicked snares which aim to crush and put them out of commission. If such priests happen to trip and fall, these enemies swiftly slam the hammer down hard with the intent of silencing them forever. The Church Militant is in a fierce battle for souls, but it sometimes seems like most Catholics don’t even realize there’s a war going on. Everyone must pray and offer personal sacrifices for priests, who are especially targeted by Satan an his minions. I specifically recall in one of Fr. Corapi’s talks when he said that he would get letters in the mail containing cocaine from people who hated him and wanted him to fall.

*“Holiness does not consist in never having erred or sinned. Holiness increases the capacity for conversion, for repentance, for willingness to start again and, especially, for reconciliation and forgiveness . . . Consequently, it is not the fact that we have never erred but our capacity for reconciliation and forgiveness which makes us saints. And we can all learn this way of holiness.”

  1. It was Fr Corapi who made this public.
  2. Please tell us what you mean by “well known” as I attend a theologate (seminary for religious) and it is not well known to me or any seminarian (a person who attends a seminary) or theologian (a student who attends a theologate).

And in what media outlet has this situation become a prominent story?
Code:
I am responding to Bro’s post. I meant that the media is not using this situation to its own advantage…but it usually does (in other cases) to its full implications! We have a priest in our diocese who has been charged with sexual molestation of altar servers for years. The media had the nerve to detail exactly hwat happened…(like: that there was no penetration but the victims were smeared, sprayed with the ejaculate.

And this would have been the the twelth article in the paper for this abuse. The media is having a hey day! You don’t hear these kind of details in the other faiths’…well, you do not even hear about other faiths molestations…

I do empathize with the victims…I believe the priest should be punished as Fr Groeschel has implicated. That being said, and as he says, the victims gets victimized twice…once by the priest and twice by the media and people…

But the media hates the Catholic Church…and since this has gone publicly by catholics themselves, maybe the media won’t even touch this. Maybe Father Corapi was the wisest one here…! God bless you Father john! We are praying for all concerned…

Really? I’ve read several articles on the subject, and I know there are books dedicated to it as well. That said, none of them are particularly new, I hope the problem has been addressed.

This is probably the best article on the subject.👍 We have a Divine Mercy Prayer Group that meets weekly in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Every week we pray the prayer for priests by St. Faustina, and include our parish priests, Bishop and Cardinal, and all of God’s chosen sons. We all need to be reminded to not only pray for them daily…at times we need to storm heaven for them!!!
