Fr. Corapi Responds to Some of His Order's Charges

You know I actually am thankful that it is going down like this. I know it is odd to say but the more and more weird this gets the more and more people will not follow him. When this all started many people were in a holding pattern of wait and see. Some even thought that this would bring about changes in a percieved “unjust” system, but as it all starts coming together with solt’s statement, and then this whole marvel comicbook character and video messages, the guy will have less credibility than Harold Camping. (which at this point is a good thing) I am sick to my stomach at what is happening and my heart breaks for this man who has helped so many and served so well. I also firmly believe that we should not be witnessing this in the media like we are. The Church is not used to internal matters being on twitter and facebook. We are witnessing mommy and daddy fighting and we never should see that.

I think he was sincere. Look SOLT said he is guilty, that may be the truth or not the truth,God knows. From his teachings I have not one time,not once seen anything taught that was contrary to the Catholic faith. He has always been honest about his past. Imagine people who hear him preach struggling with addiction, think about how many times his past was thrown in his face…Did he fall, I do not know. Some of the comments about the image being dark the beard being dark, looks as though it is more of a reflection of how he feels rather than something sinister.

Just watched the video, it is sad. With all the media blitz and branding and exposure he is forecasting, it reminded me of #Winning! Charlie Sheen. It is too painful to watch, I wish he would just obey his superiors and go back and heal.

How can you follow a suspended priest continually being unrepentant, that this is LIKELY NOT PLEASING TO CHRIST.

Otherwise, if he meant it, he wouldn’t keep giving the hangers-on these videos and teasing about his plans of doing podcasts and selling and doing radio!

Evidently, he has become a dissenter on the nature of priesthood and its obligations, as well as upon Catholic ecclesiology. A suspended priest can neither preach nor teach religion;** his intention to do so anyway would be a movement toward the Protestant camp, no matter what the message. **

It’s what I’m feeling. But it’s something that God only knows. I can’t see that far. All I know is what I have witnessed in the last two weeks disobedience and intentions to lead a flock ASTRAY. The dishonesty that Corapi has displayed in the past, and narcissitic behavior…he also alludes in the video that the past 10 years have been…not good or something. I really think right now, he is thinking of his business /worldly plans. He may have dyed his beard not because of a mid-life crisis , but because of what SOLT said he has been with women, so he’s taking care of his looks now.

It’s almost disguised as an “Angel of LIGHT” the way he says , at the end, “Stay with Christ, stay with the Church don’t follow me. I 'm just a one small man… I hope to be with you in some form ” to cover himself and fool ignorant Catholics that continuing to enable him by condoning what he is doing, is okay to do so!

He is really telling his followers, keep hope alive, you can continue to BUY from me and listen to my radio talks.
How can you continue to instruct in this deliberate defiance???

As with so many, I too am sad and confused. But I’ve been praying and will of course continue to pray for all involved as we all should.

That being said, what concerns me most is authority. Who is John Corapi accountable to? Those with authority should always be under authority. If not, problems can easily occur. The evil one loves people going off on their own (“lone rangers” so to speak) This gets leaders in the biggest trouble. IF he is claiming to be a Black “Sheepdog” that seems to imply that the Sheepdog (John Corapi) is shepharding the sheep, or watching over them. That is what a Pastor or Shephard does. Since John Corapi isn’t a Fr. by whose authority is he shepharding? Is it the Catholic Church? Since he “dropped out” before they were finished investigating he is still under suspension isn’t he? Therefore he isn’t under the Catholic Church to “shephard” this “flock” when he “moves on” does it not???! I read somewhere else that under the Catholic Church at this point “any public ministry without ecclesial approbation will be “Protestant” ministry, not Catholic”. This is troubling me.

The one thing I’ve continued to defend Fr. Corapi / Black Sheep Dog , is he did not teach much error…

His actions were however contrary. Also that he may have been living an immoral life, and deceiving people for longer than two years. Guan and others posted this reference to James.

Continue to follow and listen to HIS instruction & commentaries when he is a SUSPENDED priest. For Black Sheep Dog implies throughout his video, to forget all the controversy etc. SOLT’s statements that he is UNFIT to preach or do priestly duties. Therefore how can he be sincere when he says continue to follow Christ??

It’s not pleasing to Christ, to follow a suspended priest who disobeys, and does not try to discern God’s will working within his Superiors and Fr. Sheehan and the body of the Church.

SOLT did a good thing. I 'm sure he won’t be very successful anymore. And his support will dwindle by the grace of God hopefully not many will be deceived.

after watching the video, i posted on another thread because this was closed - i am thankful it was reopened.
for me, i am glad that he finally has appeared in video to speak. he looks so thin. he looked sad and scared. he impresses me as someone who is making a midlife career change. perhaps he feels God is calling him in another direction. his problems are far from over. i can only pray for him and hope he finds what he is looking for. he is someone God has blessed with a good business sense and a talent for speaking to people. maybe he sees a future in radio.
he has set the ball rolling, but we do not know what the future holds for him.
i tell myself not to let this distract me from my own life, which would be so easy to do.
i don’t want to sit by the computer everyday waiting for the next announcement.
he is in God’s hands and i have my own problems to deal with!

Father Corapi; My prayers are still with you and the church. My confusion is understanding just what you are moving from. I know it is not the church. I have thought that maybe it is the order that you belonged to. In the past I had to move from a job that I had no ability to change the outcome of the relationships that I had with certain people. I chose to leave, and it was the best decision I ever made. It was a great job, great people, but i needed to move on. I hope you find peace.

He says he’s still going to talk about things publicly, on broader subjects. He is treating his resignation as if he can change his career, as if the priesthood is a career. He thinks being disobedient to his superiors is just participating in “less than ideal” circumstances. In the video.

He even mentions in the video about radio talks! and podcasts!! ’ We must look to the future. ’
I am simply doing something else in life so that I won’t wither up and die, and so that you can still derive some benefit from my gifts from God. It may not be as good as before, or it may be better

But Father Joe, another priest says he can’t treat it like a career change. He is a priest forever. Even if he cleans up his act, his public instruction on faith and morals or whatever would still be scandalous…

FATHER JOE: The problem is that priesthood is not merely a job we can change or a hat we can trade for another. Even if the priest is laicized, he is configured to Christ as a priest, forever. If he cannot engage in public ministry, then he cannot do so in any fashion, even if he drops his priestly title or goes under a pseudonym as in a superhero’s secret identity. [It is rarely permitted, but sometimes a laicized priest can give religious instructions with permission of the bishop if it is generally not known that he was a priest and no scandal would result. How anyone can see that video and say they see nothing upsetting or wrong with what he says, or that they’re fine with Fr. Corapi’s decision to abandon his cloth. Both* this imagery* appear at the beginning of his video and throughout his public statements on his site and then reappears again BEHIND him at the end of his video is… .

How can that imagery reconcile that Fr. Corapi is as he says only just undergoing “less than IDEAL” circumstances. That’s all it is. And we’re supposed to be okay with this or at peace and trusting in Fr. Corapi that he’ll somehow be happy pursuing a new "career?
… He’ll find no solace by being OF the world. Jesus says, ’ Apart from me, you can do nothing. ’ An already ordained priest actively disobeying , he will achieve nothing meritoriously good by being a radio & internet public figure, even if he talks about broader topics, even if what he says is seemingly correct at times.

I agree that the weirdness will, God willing, eventually quiet the clamor over this whole episode. But…Mommy (the Church) and Daddy (Christ, Her Spouse) are fine and always will be. We are watching a teenage brother have a temper tantrum.

May I ask a question here? It would go better in the SOLT thread that was closed, but maybe someone here will know the answer.

When Fr Corapi (and no I am not a cultish “fan” but he was called that in the SOLT release) was ordained by John Paul II, did he profess his obedience to John Paul II? How does that work? Or was he ordained a priest, and then he “found” SOLT ? Perhaps after looking for a group that would allow him to do his preaching ministry as he felt called?

I’m just confused. I thought priests always gave a vow of obedience to a bishop somewhere when they were ordained. Or can they be ordained first and then find a bishop?

I am having the exact same thoughts. The evidence is compelling.

It has been going on for years. If one goes to the tax assessors site for Flathead County, Montana and does a property owner search for “Corapi”, the various owned properties, including the boat slip, are shown along with their dates of acquisition. He’s been acquiring for years.

I was never a big fan, his style of delivery lacks finesse and I do not find it attractive. The use of the royal “we” that he adopted some years ago (look at some of his YOUTUBE broadcasts) leaves me a little cold, as does this release of yesterday, note the “we are moving forward and some of you are also…” The “we” does not include his listeners, it just includes him. Well, as Queen Victoria said “We are not impressed.”

A couple of months ago he was on Fr. Mitch’s TV show, he was eaten up with his upcoming activities, his weight loss, fitness, etc. which he attributed to the implementation of a sensible diet and exercise (I guess it made his grey beard black and tanned him like a competitive bodybuilder).

I think, sadly, the SOLT order, allowing him to live 1800 miles from headquarters with nominal oversight, a successful “for profit” operating company, too much money and superstar status simply got the better of him, he isn’t the first or last. The whole economic breakdown of this country is the result of greed. It is understandable the a man who, let’s face it, has been a showman and self-promoter, would fall victim to the same thing. He’s got an ego as big as the Montana sky and thinks he has done the right thing, I really think he’s deluded himself. Hopefully the harm he does will be minimized. We need to pray for him and all those he has negatively affected.

He’s trying to maintain the relationship with the fanbase here, unfortunately.

Please God lift him out of the darkness and return him to humility and obedience. There is hope. However far he falls there is always hope - speaking from past experience here, and not taking my own salvation for granted either - God’s infinite patience and mercy is his opportunity to be saved.

I’d like to shed some light on this mess by sharing what I learned long ago in a theology class on Holy Orders and it’s a shame it’s not common knowledge among Catholics today because if it was it would go a long way to help stop these scandals in their tracks in the first place - not after the horse is out of the barn.

There are certain past sins and condition that ban someone from ever becoming a priest. These include apostasy (denying Christ), insanity, and murder (direct or indirect). An example the priest that taught the class gave is if a person recommended or encouraged someone to have an abortion and the abortion is procurred, then they are ineligible for Holy Orders. If Fr. Corapi was a big-time drug-dealer as he claimed to be (not likely though, given that he lied about being a Green Beret), then this would have precluded him from valid Holy Orders.

My point is this: this man should never have been ordained in the first place and that is the biggest problem in the church now and in the past - the ordination of unqualified and unsuitable candidates. The fact that he broadcasted that he had not led a life of virtue should have been a red flag, but so many catholics are ignorant about many important aspects of the faith. Conversion is one thing, sanctification is another and a life of virtue as a foundation is a must for those considering the priesthood. The monastery and a penitential life are appropriate options for those who have had a major conversion from a life of serious sin, not the priesthood.
