A small hyjack of the thread, but I just read this email from Fr. Groechel’s order, what a heartwarming but sad story, but also full of mercy. It’s what priests do everyday and we should be reminded of that.

Last night I watched EWTN when they did a Holy Hour for priests.

I don’t know if it was a re-run but it was beautiful. It really reminded me that we must pray for Father Corapi and all our priests. They truly need our prayers.

Well the good news is that in response to this latest video message the responses on Youtube and on his own Sheepdog website are overwhelmingly negative. Up to now, the supporters’ voices were quite loud, this time they are definitely in the minority. And since it appears he is following the comments on his websites (as he previously responded to some of them), there is hope that this avalanche of comments will with the help of God get through to him… hopefully?

It is so weird to hear all these well-schooled Catholics on the websites repeating his own words back to him to point out the error of his ways, isn’t it? This priest taught me my Catechism, he explained things I had never understood in a logical and sincere way. He gave me the tools I needed to understand my faith, defend my faith and love my faith even more.

Please God help him. St. John Vianney intercede for him.

I think this is actually a good video given the circumstances. I think wearing the leather jacket is a message to some of his followers I am not an active priest. He also mentioned stopping addressing the contaversy. He mentioned not following him but Jesus and His Church.

I will not follow him because he does not have faculties and should not be preaching. I hope his future topics are not religious, if he want to talk economics and politics, that’s fine. Obviuosly it would be better for him to reconcile and remain an active priest in some capacity. He is great speaker, he really could teach young SOLT priests public speaking techniques for example. There are contributions he can make as a priest. It is the devil that makes us lose hope in dark times, I hope he only needs more time to work thru his decisions, this video is at least a better tone then the non video messages of the past couple of weeks, although I could not hear it clearly were I am.

I think he was sincere.
I hope you are correct. There is a large part of me that believes that, but there is also a part that is questioning it.
He has always been honest about his past.
Has he? There are questions, legitimate ones in my view, which have been brought up about his military service claims.

Peace,

Jason

Yes indeed help him!!! We need to continue to pray. Fast. Sacrifice for not only him but ALL OF OUR PRIESTS. He is definitely fighting his OWN DEMONS, but I still question whether or not he is also fighting the demons imposed upon him by others.

I couldn’t bring myself to watch. Just the first frame disturbed me incredibly.

😦

Dear Lord, please help him.

My 2 children aged 10 and 7 walked over and saw his image.

DS (10) Is that Father Corapi? Why does he look like that?

DD (7) Maybe that’s not the real Father Corapi.

😦
My six year old who wants to be a priest and loved Father John said the same thing, “is that Father Corapi?” “Why is he dressed like that, where are his clerics?”
How hard it is to explain to a young child why a priest has abandoned his priesthood.
😦

Didn’t Jesus say something about scandalizing the little children? 😦

Go back and watch the last 6 seconds of the video, after the audio is finished and before the picture of the black sheepdog takes over. That has got to be the saddest looking face I have seen in a long time. He doesn’t believe what he’s saying. Or he’s in deep pain. I am going to keep praying. So far, the YouTube comments are overwhelmingly people who are praying for him, but are not supporting this change.
That’s heartening.

Sad to see this. I was waiting for him to be on a Harley at the end.

Good. They’re returning the favor.

Well this shows the Catholic church is different then other churches because it can self clean itself. The hierarchy of the structure does do this well but it can also try to protect the faithful when the church covered up priest abuse.

All in all I would rather be part of a church with Hieracrchy as long as it’s transparent in it’s leadership and watched over by the lay people to keep it’s leaders true to the faith.

True. In a Protestant church, this happens all the time. No one has to obey anyone, and we can all start our own church without anyone batting an eye.

People who follow him follow him by choice. They are responsible for their own choices as much as he is responsible for his.

Besides the Ultimate Sacrifice of Our Lord, the freedom to chose to follow or not to follow Him is the next biggest gift He gave to us. IMHO anyway.

I do, however, understand your feelings and am not trying to invalidate them. 🙂
I agree with you. There’s nothing wrong feeling sad about all this. I will still pray for Father Corapi. But I think all Catholics need to move on and stay grounded in their Faith.
Stay with the Pope and his Magisterium. I think Satan is having a grand ole time seeing what’s happening on (Both) sides of the divide. I for one will not play into or favor any of it, or pick favorite opinions from any side.

IMHO both sides are wrong! This scandal should have never reached the Hollywood media fanfare it already has; nor should it have been brought to the forefront of public scrutiny… It does absolutely nothing but bring shame on both sides of the Catholic divide.

I wanted to get down in print what he has actually said, because I find the video quite distracting. I left out all the “ums” and other vocalizations, and of course it was hard to get the pacing across, but here is the text of what he said, in essence. As I reviewed it, I saw just how shallow it was, and how he stumbled and almost choked when he first said “the Church” at the end.

Transcription of The Black Sheepdog video follows…

My dear friends, I wanted to just take a few moments to get together with you, first of all to assure you that I’m still alive. I’m still here. I know a lot of you have had concerns. But it’s been a rough month, I know that, it’s been a rough week, i t’s been a rough year, well, to be honest with you, it’s been a rough 10 years. Of course the last month or so has been the roughest of all, for you and for me too. I want to assure you that we’re gonna move into the future. I know our situation is not ideal, you know that and I know it too. I would not have wished for it to end this way. That’s not something that I would have wanted, but a lot of what happened is beyond my control. So we just have to deal with what we have. And what we have is change. And change is traumatic. And I think the older we grow, the more traumatic change is. So a radical change like I’m going through, in a certain way, some of you are going through it with me, that’s traumatic. They say that moving, when you‘re older, they equate it almost like a death in the family. When, if you live some place for 30 years and then you…your family grows up, you have to move out you move into a smaller place, it’s a traumatic thing. A friend of mine is retiring pretty soon, after 30 some years of work, same routine, going to work every day, there’s a certain trauma in that. But, life goes on. The only thing constant in this life is change. Things are gonna change, the changes are not always what we would desire; they’re not always the ideal thing. But I want you to know that we are gonna try to move on and make the best of it because as I’ve said before, I was faced what I thought was only two choices. Number one, I could just crawl under some rock and quietly die, Number two, numb. (I am not 100% sure of this word)

So I don’t think I’m gonna crawl under a rock and die just yet. But I don’t want you to think that I’m going to make a career out of controversy. I don’t have any desire to do that. I want to move on, do the best I can, make the best of the talents God has given me and make, continue to make some small contribution to humanity in general.

I want you to know kind of what we’re moving toward. Next week, I’m kinda drawing a line in the sand. I may make a statement or two between now and the end of next week concerning the controversy in the Church, but after next week, it’s my intention not to say any more about it. Because if not, if you don’t draw that line in the sand, it goes on forever. After that, we’re moving into the future. There’ll still be a thousand questions, they may remain unanswered forever. We’re moving into the future.

What are we moving into. Well, I have to use the talents God’s given me, and those are mostly verbal. So, writing and speaking, will continue to be my stock and trade so to speak. My autobiography is almost finished, we hope to get it out by early fall, the title is “The Black Sheepdog,” of course. We’re certainly going to be keeping you updated on the social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. We’re gonna be keeping in touch with you so you know what we’re up to. We’re gonna be moving into radio broadcasting, starting with web radio, gradually into more conventional radio, hopefully, podcasting and so forth. So we’re gonna try to make use of the media that we have available to us, right now, as we go forward. I can only do what I can do, I can’t do what I don’t have access to, but we’ll still be available to you in some way. The message probably will be broader and reach a broader audience, that’s what we believe and that’s what we hope.

I want to leave you with a final thought. Don’t be sad, and don’t be mad. And don’t be bitter. And don’t be cynical, and love … the Church, no matter what. Remember, you follow Jesus Christ, and his Church, you don’t follow me. You love the Lord Jesus Christ and you love His Church, above everything else. I come way down at the bottom of the list, if at all, and I want to encourage you to keep your priorities straight, Always love the Lord Jesus and always love the Church, because that’s where your salvation lies. If I can in some small way, make a small contribution towards encouraging you, to inspiring hope, or whatever other positive thing that I can do in the future, I’m gonna try to do that. I thank you for your kindness, for your many prayers, for your encouragement and for your support, I don’t take it for granted, I value it, very much. You’re d my dear friends, and I hope I’ll still be with you in some form, for a long time. God bless you. (fade)

Perfectly sensible post.

If we could try to keep comments to what is known and if one must be critical, please do so in as charitable a manner as is possible so that we can keep the thread open.

Having said that, while some parts of the video bothered me I was happy to see him talk and to encourage his followers about loving Christ and loving the Church.

Pax Christi,

Jason
I agree Jason. It’s hard to see him to so sad. His years of blunt, orthodox, and consistent preaching have earned him a lot of credibility, but they have also created many enemies. He was very critical of some Catholic leaders, Catholic institutions and powerful political interests who would court the Catholic base while acting against the Faith. He will no longer be a stone in their shoes.

I am encouraged by his message about the “line in the sand.” Since this matter will never be cleared up enough for everyone’s satisfaction, it’s a good idea to move onwards. I pray that he will continue to be an asset to the Church Militant. Certainly his catechetical teachings will be used by many for years to come.

The best thing he could do for the Church Militant would be to return to his Society in a perfect example of Christian obedience and humility but that is obviously not happening, at least at this stage.

My understanding is that priests who have been laicized (he has not been but that seems to be the path he is on), are forbidden from teaching religion in any form without express permission of the Bishop of his diocese and under the condition that no one would recognize him as a former priest. As was pointed out on another thread, given the profile of his life, the chance that anyone would not know he was a former priest is minimal at best.

He has stated that he is not leaving the Church and that we should love and follow the Church. In my (probably not humble enough) opinion, he would do well to take a strong dose of his own advice. If he will not return to his Society and eventually gain recovery of his priestly faculties or function as a Brother in the SOLT, and he cannot teach religion as a laicized priest, then he has no options which allow him to do what it is he says he is going to do.

I do not see how one can remain in the Church while at the same time violating Church law by: A) not following the legitimate orders of his superior; or B) continuing to teach religion as a laicized priest or priest with no faculties. These things do not equal.

I agree. There is more than one way to preach.

Is it safe to say that until the Church officially announces that he has been laicized or excommunicated he can still teach or preach without faculties for the time being?

SOLT said “Catholics should understand that SOLT does not consider Fr. John Corapi as fit for ministry”. But he hasn’t yet been considered laicized or excommunicated by the Church. What does this mean for Catholics who might still listen to him going forward since SOLT said he is not “fit” for ministry? Can we still listen in with prudence or has Coprai been added to the offical ban list for Catholics?

If he comes back to SOLT community. He have to stay sober and clean. I really think it’s not happening anytime soon. I pray and hope that he finds his way towards the truth.
