Today, Wednesday, I attended Mass at a downtown church, where I am not familiar with the priests. Although I have learned to overlook unauthoized “tweakings” of the liturgy that pop up in different ways in different places, I found it much more difficult to sit still during the long homily this priest gave in which he berated the heirarchy, our new pope, as authoritarian, demonstrated, he said, by the “forced” resignation of Tom Reese, S.J., the editor of the Jesuit magazine “America.” He also denounced the Church’s opposition to gay unions (though he said he wouldn’t necessarily insist these need to be called marriage.), euthanasia, and abortion and the Church’s efforts to pressure Catholic polititians with unCatholic positions. I have never thus far heard so much poison come out of the mouth of a Catholic priest, and never from the pulpit.
My stomach was churning. I prayed Hail Mary’s over and over as he spoke, and when several people ahead of me got up and walked out, I was so tempted to join them – I have done that before, but it has been suggested to me that that action disrespects Our Lord. I stayed, reasoning that I had come to receive Jesus and it didn’t matter if the vehicle were the worst priest alvie…
I don’t doubt this matter has come up far too often on the forum, but I was overwhelmed by the prospect of searching for the like sitiation so that I might better cope with this when it happens again. Help! This eats me up inside. I approach communion with my innards bathed in the acid of anger.

And yes, I have thought about contacting the archdiocese, but that always feels like spitting into the wind (sigh).

Unless your Mass was at Old St. Patrick’s (which doesn’t typically do homilies during the week), the downtown church was run by an order, not by the archdiocese. The cardinal still has influence of course, but, save yourself the aggrivation, and pray about it, and go to some other downtown church.

Welcome to the world of indigestible homilies. I gave up trying to swallow the really bad kind and found a different Catholic parish to belong to. Save yourself the trouble and do the same if it is most peaceful for you. There are extra measures you can take (letter writing etc. ) but only if God is asking this of you.

I am sorry for you and I understand your anger.
Offer your suffering to God. You can. Pray to God. He will hear your prayers. I am sure He has heard your suffering already. Remember that God has a reason for everything. We simply aren’t made to understand all of God’s ways.

I’ll pray for God’s peace for you.

OOOOF!

Sounds like a belly twisting sermon to say the least!
If I may make a suggestion. Inquire about the parish and their priests before you go there. Find “homes” where this won’t happen, or at least where the priests are honestly misinformed and not militant like this.

Prayerfully yours,
Usque.

I probably would have thrown a missalette at him, then a shoe, umbrella, … right before they tossed me out on the “w”'s of my wranglers.
He must know he is preaching to a potentially hostile audience.

Let me ask you though. This phony-baloney has probably fired up your faith though, hasn’t he?

Catholics are called to enculturate our faith in society, this includes the clergy. This priest sounds like a heretic! He will mislead God-seeking people to believe such nonsense. We cannot afford to sit down and not take action when it comes to desecration of our faith and polution of our faith environment. **Please pray for this priest, but also write your bishop about the homily! Do not take for granted that he already knows! **

Yes, many of us have been there. I have had to spend all the time from the homily to the Communion just saying Acts of Contrition, and then I haven’t been entirely sure that I’m in a state of grace!!! One in my parish is so pathetic that he doesn’t even have to open his mouth before I start to have horrid thoughts about him. :banghead:
I never thought that praying for these icky people would be good for me (as one frequently hears), but I will say that saying, “Dear Lord, please shed your light and blood on ______” several times each day does help. Besides, He might shed His common sense on them, too. One never knows.

God bless, 🙂

Anna

I just thought of something else: Here’s an example of where the video camera should be pulled out, then a DVD burned and a copy sent to Rome. One copy could even go to the Archdiocese, but my opinion, too, is that Cardinal George is a disappointment.

If that priest was comfortable saying those things once, he’ll do it again. Someone should be ready.

Here is something I just found in the “Ask an Apologist” section:

Generally speaking, when addressing liturgical abuses one should work one’s way up the chain of command: the pastor, the bishop, the USCCB, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Pope.

For more information on how to address liturgical abuses in your diocese, I recommend contacting Adoremus (an apostolate especially dedicated to genuine reform of the liturgy) and the St. Joseph Foundation (an apostolate that assists Catholics in asserting their rights within the Church).

I hope the priest wasn’t Andrew Greeley who lives in Chicago. He is unbelievably anti-Catholic even though he claims to be. Complain to the diocese…how else can things get rectified and people be able to return to the church?

Just another example of how these people are in abject panic.

My advice…sit back and enjoy them scurrying for cover like cockroaches who have light shined on them.

Hopefully, the big red shoe will come down before they can reach cover. Squish. :bounce:

I probably would have gone out into the vestibule after Mass, shook his hand, and said “Interesting homily, Reverend. If you ever decide to join the Catholic Church, let me know—I can point you in the right direction.”

And then if he made some comment along the lines of “I am Catholic!”, I’d have favored him with one of those incredulous “You gotta be kidding me” looks, and then laughed.

And still laughing while shaking my head, I would depart. Maybe stop halfway to the doors, look back and say, “‘I am Catholic!’”, and laugh harder yet as I went out the door.

Nothing irritates a dissident more than you reminding them that they’re actually Protestants.

Hello friend, I so much feel for you and pray for your strength. Gods house in in ruins, that’s a fact. But on the other hand we have a choice to make: We can take the way of St. Francis and find ways to repair the damage (even if it’s in a small way) or the way of Luther which is another tear in the body. I think you did the right thing to stay and take Eucharist. Think of those folks who satan scared away from the table of our Lord. We must remain faithful to what is true and right. Keep the faith!

But when we have our kids there and after Mass they say “Dad how come father says it’s o.k. about the things you have taught us are not o.k. (contraception, married priests)??? I ask myself after explaining things to my kids about priests who aren’t orthodox
" When is this garbage going to stop??” Talking about religious vocations to my kids who see no-habit nuns and priests who teach error laden agendas. This is all so difficult, but fight on good Catholic’s…fight on.

Ironic, eh?

If things were really so bad that many people ran out because of his homily (though many people are constantly running in and out of the Church which seems to be suggested), then report it to ths pastor and the religious superiors.

I sympathize with you. My former priest/paster (who was also my RCIA instructor) was a rabid modernist. He used to rail against Pope John Paul II and preach pro-gay sermons, etc., and claimed that the church needed to ordain women priests. The only thing he did NOT endorse was abortion (his one saving grace!). I stormed out of church several times during his sermons. He’s at another parish now, one that has a website. I looked it up and read his parish bulletin for the week after Ratzinger was elected pope. He made it very clear that he is not happy with Ratzinger. Same junk, different parish. My parish has a good priest now, thank God.

Even if a parish is run by an order and not by the Diocese, the priests still have to present themselves to the Local Ordinary and be submissive to the Bishop. This should definitely be reported to the bishop AND also to the order. Do not delay…

AHHH, the peace and assurance of attending a TLM!. Not a prayer in heaven or hell would get you anything but a Catholic Sermon…Related to the readings or feast of the day. The rubric practice is totally abuse-free to boot. You get to spend all the time in adoration without thinking of an abuse or heresy, or recording same.

Welcome to the new American Episcopal Unity Church, they do already have women priests ( they just need to step down to the courthouse and change their names ). Sounds like a real flake of a priest. It shouldn’t surprise you. Just go to another church? Like the above commentors says ? We as Catholics shouldn’t have to ! The gay stuff, the protestant they fired from the wimp magazine is bad enough, but any comment about abortion or euthenasia is walk out material ! Write a letter or call the bishop AND do not give ANY money to the diocese unless action is taken. Give it to a good organization that will NEVER speak such vomit like the Pius X Society or Fraternal Order of St. Peter. This is the real future of the church in this country! Go to these masses and/or an Eastern Rite church. I am sure there are many in Chicago.
