Actually, this is the approach of the theology of both the Eastern Orthodox as well as Eastern Rite Churches that pledge allegiance to Rome. The latter also permit married priests. Can anyone tell me provide a logical reason why Rome put him in the doghouse?

Well:
Fr. Edward Schillebeeckx agreed with Fr. Karl Rahner that the
physical bread and wine were only a “sign” of Christ.[15] In fact,
for Schillebeeckx, the “real presence” of Christ in the Eucharist was
not the consecrated bread and wine, but the presence of Christ in the
<“assembled community”>.[16] This is why Schillebeeckx says that “<I
kneel, not before a Christ who is, as it were, condensed in the host,
but before the Lord himself> who is offering his reality, his body, to
me through the host.”[17]

Proposes a “transignification” whereby the “sign”
of the bread and wine are changed into the “sign” of Jesus Christ.
This heresy is specifically condemned in the Pope Paul VI Eucharistic Encyclical Mysterium
Fidei.

We would condemn souls to hell if we thought, “Oh, they were sooo good that they don’t need prayers.” That is a very naive thought. And regardless of anything thing he wrote or said, the heresy of transignification, condemned by Paul VI in Mysterium Fidei, is enough to condemn his soul. He was for sure a material heretic, and because of the Vatican’s measures to warn him on his position, he was most likely a formal heretic. If one dies an unrepentant formal heretic there is only one destination, hell. SO, because of his direct opposition to one of THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL Catholic dogmas, I would say he needs as many prayers and masses said for him as is humanly possible. To not pray and not recognize the graveness of his errors is to either be ignorant of matters on the Catholic faith or to share in the errors themselves…
