Fr. Benedict Groeschel will be in the Valley this weekend for the first Mass of newly ordained Friar of the Renewal Agustino Miguel Torres of Alamo TX, where he will be homilist, and at the Corpus Christi celebration at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle, where he will give homily and teaching on the priesthood.
cdob.org/
link to diocesan website has this story on the homepage

we also have another new priest being ordained for DOB, Michael Koday

the church will be jammed. the priest being ordained is one of those responsible for bringing the Friars to the Valley several times for Youth 2000, and this will be in his home parish, who hosted most of the Y2K events.

You’ll be there won’t you? Come back and post how it went…

To be sure. PA let us know how it went! Of course enjoy but go with a mindset that you are going to remember as much as possible to tell us here!

This puts me in a harsh dilemma, PA. I can either go see one of my favorite EWTN priests at the Shrine (Fr. Benedict) or go to Mass at my parish and watch my pastor (Monsignor Robert Maher) give one of his amazing homilies.

while I am going to solve the dilemma by going to St. Joseph for noon Mass, just stopping for a quick bite. did not make to to Alamo yesterday because of even in my own parish, but this morning was grand. Fr. Benedict says it was his first mariachi Mass, and he loved it, and promised to get EWTN to come down here and film something at the Basilica. He was also impressed by the fact that people were mostly quiet before and after Mass (which must have been the Holy Spirit because at times this place is like a zoo, esp. on Sunday and holidays with more pilgrims.).

His preaching on the Real Presence, and catechetical session on the history of devotion to the Eucharist and origin of the feast were of course terrific. He is as always, clear, to the point, and using simple words to convey profound realities, the very exemplar of a catechist. glad to see many of the DREs and catechists there, including at least a couple of dozen sisters.

Eucharistic vigil last night, back to San Juan this afternoon for Corpus Christi procession, marching with the CUF group. this is getting to be more like what I remember about Corpus Christi devotion as a child. Now if they bring back 40 hours it will really rock.

by the way, the custom now at the Basilica is to pray Salva Regina facing the image of Our Lady of San Juan after Mass, and I think that blew the friars away. Head of the order was there, as were several other friars including the two newly ordained priests, one our own Fr. Gus. yes I did get teary eyed when the young friar who assists Fr. Groeschel and Fr. Ortega, rector of the Basilica, helped him to his feet. He appears more frail in person than he does on TV, and sat for his teaching (but stood for the homily and the consecration, in which he and the other friars concelebrated). walks haltingly with a cane and always has someone next to him for assistance. he spoke especially to us abuelos and abuelitas who like him are approaching that certain age. dear, dear man. and YES he spoke specifically about returning to reception of communion on the tongue, loud applause (yeah, I know we don’t like applause in church, but this merited it).

I’ve been to two Sunday masses at the Shrine in since December. I went to the the Saturday 5:30 p.m. on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. That mass was with Fr. Labus (who was two grades ahead of me at St. Joseph’s School in Edinburg), that Mass amazingly quiet and reverent. Fr. Labus is an amazing homilist.

I went to the Sunday 5:30 p.m. on Pentecost Sunday. The Shrine was noisy and it was impossible to pray and focus on the Mass. I am guessing that was a big pilgrimage day.

I guess I’ve been spoiled by how low-key and reverent Msgr. Bob’s Masses are.

I ended up going to 9 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph’s today. I went and spent about 45 minutes in front of the Exposed Blessed Sacrament at St. Joseph’s last night. The silence and being in the presence of our Lord was moving.

Someone should also suggest to EWTN to do a documentary on how the OMI’s established the network of parishes and missions that became the Diocese of Brownsville.
