In fairness to the bishop emeritus, his post hit before some of the facts were out. Mark Shea’s take on it is quite gracious towards the bishop (but not so nice to Corapi):
That’s an interesting blogger there. I have a raspy voice (if I make it to heaven our Lord will have to help me out here so I can sing praises to him), but this guy sings as clear as a Cibao crow in the morning (Cibao is a region of the Dominican Republic). It’s nice to hear someone speak out and tell it like it is.

I enjoyed the satire by Pat Archibold ( not that I know who he is).

There are two elements here; the Church and the flock, and Father Corapi. I think for the sake of the flock people need to be clear and as for Father Corapi we need to pray ardently for him.

Would anyone know for sure if Corapi’s DVD set on the Catechism is now being sold at a discounted price (I have heard it is) and where it can be found?

If it is against the rules to discuss trade in the forums then kindly PM me.

Thanks in advance.

Yes something bad has gotten to him.

I don’t care for his black sheep dog website theblacksheepdog.wordpress.com/. -

Curious, Padre Pio said the devil was like a “rabid dog tied to a chain; beyond the length of the chain he cannot seize anyone” and Fr Corapi’s website says the black sheep dog is"unleashed."
Yes, of the many, many things I’m uncomfortable about, the “unleashed” reference also bothered me. He thinks of the priestly vocation as a leash of sorts, and by giving up his active priestly ministry and the ability to administer the sacraments, now he is free? That is so… sad. I’ve spoken to other priests and religious, especially those living in community as imbuing great interior freedom. One nun (sorry, I forget who) said, the walls of the cloister set her free.

Some of his followers are shortening the Black SheepDog title to “Dog.” They are saying stuff like, “Dog is right about this, or should listen to Dog.” Weird. I can’t stop calling him Father and have to keep going back to change my posts to abide by his request to drop the “father” before his name.

Did they mean that he was leaving public ministry as a Priest? He states he is not leaving the priesthood, he must step down from public ministry as a Priest, but is still a Priest. Two different things. People just can’t seem to grasp that.
It IS confusing. I’m not a cradle Catholic, so maybe I’m missing something. Can a Priest simply state they are stepping down from public ministry as a priest, ask folks to stop using the title “father” and then resume doing ministry or whatever without any any of the usual restrictions imposed by the priesthood - and do this WITHOUT requesting laitization? (sorry about that - not sure how to spell it).

That is weird to refer to an ordained priest as “dog”, I will continue to think of him as Father for the reason of his being validly ordained. Anyhow the “dog” reference makes me think of that reality show Dog the Bountyhunter.

Wouldn’t it be great if that woman would just come forward and said she lied.

Unfortunately, that’s inevitable, considering the moderaters will post a warning (twice at least) and right after it people will continue like they never read the warning. In one ear and out the other. It’s a shame, too. 😦
I hear you.

I wonder how tougher submission and obedience must be when you have a great deal of money? It opens avenues that would have been closed if one had been poor.

Also, I thought Mark Shea calling him “dog” was meant as an insult, is that how he’s going to be routinely referred to as from now on?

Neither do I. It is quite dark. As a cradle Catholic raised by an elderly person with already old views, I understand that Satan sometimes presents himself as a black dog. I would think that Father Corapi would know this. Given my understanding, it really bothers me to see in the eyes of the black dog the white sheep. We need to pray for the flock and for Father Corapi.

His post today about posting phone conversations with his accuser… ugh. This gives me a headache.

Being priest means two equally important things
  • the ordination which leaves permanent sign on the soul, taken into the future life too
  • the jurisdiction which gives him power to teach in the name of the Church, and to administer the sacraments.
He abandoned this later. Probably he will try to clear himself in civil courts, but tihs just will throw him farther from the Church. He was tried by God, and he could be saint on the way of the humility.

The Judge is God, but we should always keep in our mind that the Christian way is the cross and humility.

Just posted at his blog

Why do that?:(😦
The comment thread on that posting is filled with people just begging him not to disclose those phone messages, and how poor a decision that would be. I can only hope that he is moved by their pleading for him to take up his cross

It appears that this threat has even his diehard supporters in dismay. If he reads those posts and really listens to what the flock is imploring, he will reverse course. They are truly heartfelt pleadings. I pray that he will be filled with super-abundant grace and return to his priestly office.

As I understand things, there is no civil suit against Corapi. The only civil suit he seems to be involved in is the “breach of contract” suit he brought against his accuser.

Well, once ordained a priest, one is a priest forever (as it imparts an indellible mark upon the soul). However, priests can leave active ministry and even be laicized. It is certainly not desirable for priests to do so, but it happens. We shouldn’t presume anything negative about a man based upon that alone.
It was not his choice to leave active ministry, though. He was suspended indefinitely. Therefore, since he is obedient, he no longer has the authority to minister as a priest. That does not make him less of a priest, just forbids him to minister as one.

Wouldn’t it be great if that woman would just come forward and said she lied.
I remember people saying this when all the priest scandals first came to light several years ago: “Oh, all those boys were just lying to get attention; priests would never do that sort of thing!”

We want so much for priests to be “perfect” but we should remember that they are men and sinners, just like the rest of us.

I believe these are voice mails, not phone conversations. Recording phone conversations without consent is illegal, so I highly doubt he would publish that. Voice mails are fair game since, by definition, your purpose is to be recorded.

I haven’t read each and every post on this thread, but I wanted to add something that I’ve had a little time to think about today. In the MP3 Corapi posted earlier he said 90+% of his ministry wasn’t sacramental, that most of his time was spent in preparing lectures, giving talks, traveling and making DVDs and videos etc. While I suppose that is all quite true it was the sacramental things he could do that made his lectures etc. all the more meaningful and powerful.

It’s almost as if he’s saying I’m not giving much up or losing out on much by going in this new direction. As a priest, I’d thought Corapi would’ve understood that if he only said one mass in his life the spiritual benefits of that one mass would far outweigh all his other works, no matter how good. Even if he’d heard only one confession the forgiveness that person received would be of far more benefit than any seminar or lecture series he recorded. It leaves me a little confused in the end.

The other comments I’ve heard from him in both the MP3 and an online Youtube video don’t fill me with comfort either. And as others have mentioned he sometimes seems to be making contradictory statements or things meant to inflame sentiments.

Can anything he’s posted even be remotely verified? I don’t see how it can since all we know about this whole thing comes from him. Any statements coming from his former order or bishops is a reaction to his statements or a pro forma announcement we’d expect if any priest was put on leave. So we don’t know if the whole process is as biased as he claims or if things even went down the way he claims they have. I find it especially hard to believe that his lawyers seemed so eager and willing to throw the towel in and just tell him to leave the priesthood like he was walking away from a bad deal at a car dealership.
