Looks like a new video was posted from Fr. Pfleger’s Easter homily.

About a minute or so in he says (rough transcript):

“Because Jesus ripped the veil and made a way for me to get in to the garden where he first put us…that would make me shout…all by myself. that would make me happy and cause me to praise him, cause me to glorify him cause me to exalt him all by myself…now that I can have once again that intimacy and that fellowship, I don’t need a high priest, I don’t need the Pope, I don’t need the Cardinal, I don’t need the patriarchs, I don’t need the prophets, I don’t need nobody…I can go to God for myself. Somebody need to shout cause you don’t need nobody to take you where you can go…”

He later claims that we all have the power of binding and loosing.

I don’t care for Pfleger’s manner of preaching and I think what he is quoted as saying here is badly put, but of course Catholic theology holds that you or I may pray to God directly. Indeed, the Pope can’t say our prayers for us (though he may pray for us). We are called to pray and this would make no sense if we couldn’t.

Again, I am not defending Pfleger’s manner, which I think courts controversy. But surely we agree that we each may rejoice individually for God’s grace.

I tried to watch the whole thing…couldn’t bring myself to. Had to click off. If you wouldn’t know better, you’d swear he was a protestant preacher. Their theology is: no mediators between God and His children…was waiting for him to proclaim that the Word was our only guide to the Father, no Church Doctrine needed. But just couldn’t handle it.😊

Sure … but “we” don’t have the power to bind and loose.

Please Oh Please Cardinal George, do something with him!!!:bigyikes:

Mark,

The context seems to imply more than just approaching God through our prayers. Also, the whole part about all of us receiving the keys and having the power of binding and loosing does not make sense to me.

Granted. I’m thinking the reason his bishop doesn’t discipline Pfleger is that he speaks so broadly it is hard to be sure what, exactly, he is asserting. For example, if he means that we have the power, as individuals, to forgive those who have sinned against us, well, we do. Of course, I don’t know why he would feel a need to say that. I’m wondering if maybe he delights in coming up with an outrageous line, such as “I don’t need the Pope”, and then a context in which he can use it without being held to assert something actually heretical. Also, much of his preaching is ‘in character’ and thus not meant to be taken literally.

Again, and let me be clear, I am not defending him. He puts me right off. But by being so over the top, he may be hard to discipline because it is not so clear what he actually means!

And another thing, I grew up Protestant (Southern Baptist) and think it unfair to suggest that what Pfleger is doing would be acceptable in most Protestant churches. Conversely, we know it is permitted in Catholic ones, and by a Cardinal of the Church!

Amen, Brother! I completely agree.

This priest is dangerous, for certain. His straying from the GIRM is actually more egregious than his statements about the ordination of women … on the other hand, liturgical abuse doesn’t make front-page news.

This Priest keeps going against the church, keeps disobeying the Church law.

If this is the only reason he’s in the Priesthood, to cause trouble, I have two words to say to him

Get Out.

God help us ! this man has gone off the rails and can no-longer consider himself in communion with Rome, he’s a protester now, and he’s teaching heresy.

He needs to be defrocked…time to head for the hills…

There doesn’t seem to be anything authentic about Father Pfleger. He speaks in an overly dramatic “black minister” voice. Yet, I’ve seen interviews with him where he talks like a typical educated white man with no accent whatsoever. And it bothers me that he says we don’t need anyone else, not the Pope, Church or anyone else. In the Church’s creed we say we believe in the communion of saints. We in the Catholic chuch have our beloved Blessed Mother. We have all the angels and saints. We realize we are sinful human beings and God has provided us with so much help. I spent many years in Protestant churches where we are all basically our own Pope and magesterium. I am here to say it doesn’t work. That is why there are tens of thousand of Protestant sects and new ones developing every day.

This priest is truly dangerous.

Too bad somebody didn’t show this to Cardinal George before he gave him the award.

Well, hopefully Cardinal George can do something about the heresies Fr. Pfleger seems to have no problem preaching.

No offense to the Protestant denominations. But isn’t this one of the theological views that separates Catholics from Protestants? That we don’t have any “mediators” or no guidance from anyone but God Himself? That Church doctrine is kind of thrown out the window? Maybe it depends on what Protestant denomination you’re talking about. Although, I am certainly not an authority by any stretch on Protestant denominations, I have had some personal experience through acquaintances to recognize his line of thinking. I don’t really want to open a can of worms here, but at the very least he sounds non Catholic…and maybe close to “anti Catholic”.

it’s interesting to me that there seems to be more vitriol directed at this fellow rather than at the bishops and cardinals and priests who destroyed the bodies and souls of so many young children.

interesting indeeed.

I don’t think this is the case at all…this isn’t a thread about the scandal…this is a thread about preaching false Church doctrine. Please don’t hyjack the thread.
