Fr. Pfleger on Apology: They Made Me Do it, But I Didn't Mean it

Patrick Craine, reporting for LifeSite News, had an interesting item out our favorite minister, Fr. Pfleger:

CHICAGO, Illinois, April 16, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In the latest episode in an ongoing controversy, Fr. Michael Pfleger has again publicly voiced his support for women’s ordination, this time in a comment posted to his Facebook fan page. In that comment, he also notes that the archdiocese made him issue the apology he put out on Wednesday.

“Sunday, I mentioned in my Sermon that I believe in married Priests and Woman Priests,” the Facebook comment reads. “I was then told that I had to apologize for saying it durning [sic] a Sermon because that is not allowed, even though that is my opinion.

“I have received much hate from the right-winged who want my removal,” he added. “Amazing… Nobody Blogged me or youtubed me about helping Save our children or Stopping the Violence…”

Father Phleger forgets that, as a priest, he is responsible to uphold the teachings and discipline of the Church irregardless of his personal opinions. Sometimes Mike just doesn’t think.
 
however much i disagree with his position ~ i must say, at least he’s honest
 
Well, the title of this thread (taken from a partisan site) is inaccurate. The good father never said he didn’t mean the apology or that he was forced to apologize.

The site can be judged for taking liberties like that.
 
Adam was given the divine mandate to act as steward of life before Woman was created. He betrayed this, repented–blamed the Woman, God’s gift and his responsibility–and ever after man alone has offered sacrifice to atone for the “Sin of Adam.”

The Woman, and through her, her Seed, was then given the mandate to crush the source of evil in God’s cursing of Lucifer and his seed with the Woman & Seed in Genesis 3:15. Woman was then slated to follow Adam’s teaching authority. The “Sin of Adam” isn’t Woman’s problem. No woman can be a priest. Woman & Seed have a separate mandate from God. Christ acted under both mandates: as Priest-Sacrifice; and as Seed of the Woman. Apocalypse 12 shows the Woman & Seed being persecuted and we, her other children, suffering as well. May we persevere by God’s grace and mercy.

Christ explicitly asked for “spiritual eunuchs” to serve His kingdom. Those with ears to hear, obey. There are rites in the Catholic Church which allow married priests. Done and done. This cross-dressing can stop now. The strategy of the homosexual priests posting at St. Sebastian’s Angels pornographic website was to lobby for adoption of married priests; women priests; and this would pave the way for openly homosexual priests. God forbid. Do not blame the Woman for the Sin of Adam as Adam did.

Let the Immaculate Heart of Mary, she who is “blessed among women” not “blessed above women” as Hannah was, be exalted and, in so doing, exalt all women. The lack of a public, solemn, universal consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart in all cathedrals at one time by the bishops; and the Immaculate Heart’s patience; shows that even she is subject to Christ and His Church and will not force her will but awaits the invitation requested at Fatima under her title, “Our Lady of the Rosary.” “Pray the daily Rosary for peace.”

Underline where you think he says he was forced to apologize and that he did not mean his apology. He stated that he apologized for inserting the opinion in a homily and that it was his opinion.

The headline for the site is inaccurate and a violation of journalistic standards.
 
I am sorry but I must state my opinion…but in my view Father (and I use that term loosely) should move on…

Chewed on this with my wife a bit and came up with an interesting thought of how man can be Christ-like but never Christ and how woman by her nature strives to be as perfect a mother as Mary. However if the Church makes the unfortunate decision to ordain women priests than does that not put her above Mary, especially considering Persona Christi?

You have trouble processing the nuances of the English language. Are you as French as your name sounds? Perhaps its a language barrier, if so. Saying “I was TOLD” to apologize does not sound as if he would have apologized at all for stating his opinion unless it was ordered by his bishop. It is implied that his aplogy was not sincere or of his own volition. Hope this helps you with this point. Father is definitely flirting with disaster here and I pray that St. Michael will come to his aid before his vocation is completely ruined.

You equate this with “I was MADE to apologize”? As obstreperous as the good father is, how do you think he would respond to such an order? It sounds like he was told an apology was in order.

Yes, you’ve clarified everything except the claim that 'he didn’t mean it". Where did the website drag that allegation from? Its not in the priest’s statement and it makes him sound particularly bad.

But the site is non-partisan and would not try to make him look bad, right? Right?
 
I’m sure Father Pfleger does some good, but overall he is a major source of embarrassment for the Church. His politics and rhetoric sometimes make me cringe.

I think you referring to suspending a priest from public ministry. But I know nothing about the requirements to justify such a punishment.

This is a little off topic, but since the word has been raised, I wonder if “defrock” is a term we should be using. Isn’t it pejorative, in that it suggests that priests wear frocks (a non-US English word for dress) which I think is a reference to the traditional priestly cassock?
 
Prior to the election, did anyone outside of Chicago even know who this guy is?

I gotta tell you that people outside of Chicago make much more of this supposed ‘embarrassment’ than folks who live here. Like the gay folks marching on the cathedral, some outsiders have got themselves all wrapped up in high dudgeon over incidents which people here really take in stride.

Being in Chicago and being aware of the community involvement of Father Pfleger and not just noting his more outre moments seems to help. Its easy to point out the mis-steps of someone but the priest has been working in a poor parish for years and generally gets high marks from city and church officials for his work.

Many people outside of Chicago do not seem realize that, as shown from the comments here. Provocative and inaccurate headlines on stories in partisan sites do not help the information level.
 
Here is a whole different take on this. Father Pfleger’s actions are so ridiculous and the Cardinal granting him an award is so outrageous I believe this could all just be a diversion to keep eyes off of something else going on , behind the scenes, in the archdiocese.

Any comments?
