Fr Z on defunding academia

I am not a fan of Fr Z but I am a fan of defunding academia. Not learning, not education.
Academia, the leftist indoctrination system. Institutionalize academia is guilty of fraud IMO, and they ought to make reparations (since guilt is a popular thing nowadays…plenty to go 'round).

Nah, I am saying that if you aren’t teaching your students to think, then you aren’t good at being an educator and should go somewhere else and leave the educating to people that actually do it.

Frequently, this phrase betrays the underlying errant philosophy that one ought to value one’s opinion rather than come to a truthful conclusion. Most people can already think, although many could benefit from a 100 level logic course for sure.

A teacher stimulates studiosity and the desire to learn. Many people believe they have “learned how to think for themselves” when in reality what they are doing is emoting and asserting.
 
I have worked in academia for 41 years. Father Z has only scratched the top of the craziness.

Yeah I get that, but this is going to be a whole new ball game. He’ll call them unamerican, and when they start dying from CV-19 and unions start calling for shutdowns he’ll throw his DHS goons into the mix like he is in Portland. This will not be pretty.
 
I know I’m from the UK, it’s the US abbreviation for Department of Homeland Security. One of the US’s many alphabet agencies.

Lots of the protesters are, indeed, “unamerican”. When someone wants to burn down a federal courthouse, it’s hard to think of that person in any other way. Why are they any better than Timothy McVeigh? I don’t see that they are.

Does anybody seriously think teachers are all crouching in their closets at home, masked, with antiseptic spray kept wet on their hands? No. They’re doing the things other people are doing. At least during this summer, some of us have an excuse for going out and taking a risk. Some of us have to work out in the public to make a living and don’t have the alternative of going on strike and getting paid to do it.

If some teachers are vulnerable due to age or physical condition, I’m fine with protecting them. Let them stay home until there’s a vaccine (if ever) and draw their pay. The able-bodied younger teachers have no business claiming greater protection than the rest of us have, and particularly when it is at the expense of children.

If teachers strike, there are probably enough of them, combined with substitute teachers and teaching students, to replace them.

Yes, they’re making snatch and grab arrests of peaceful protesters from unmarked cars. Have you noticed that crowds have grown since the clampdown? That’s because it’s a frankly idiotic tactic to use, what makes it worse is that the DoD know it’s the wrong move, they have it written in a manual. It didnt work in Ireland in 1916, it won’t work now.
 
So your position is that the rioters should be allowed to burn down federal courthouses? This “grabbing peaceful protesters from unmarked cars” is just anarchist mythology. If the feds are arresting people, they have reason to do it, and I hope they prosecute them fully.

And if they put them in unmarked cars, so what? There are lots of police cars that are unmarked. Highway patrol too. Why not the feds?
 
If that was true why are they immediately released without charge when they lawyer up? Oh that’s right, it’s because “the feds” are illegally detaining peaceful protesters.
