Fractions as extreme evil?

It seems that fractions may have been avoided in Judaism except with regard to the measure of wine that one is to drink during Passover:

**It was taught, R. Judah b. Bathyra said: When the temple was in existence there could be no rejoicing save with meat, as it is said, And thou shalt sacrifice peace-offerings, and shalt eat there; and thou shalt rejoice before the Lord thy God.6 But now that the Temple is no longer in existence, there is no rejoicing save with wine, as it is said, and wine that maketh glad the heart of man.7 R. Isaac said: The xestes8 for muries in Sepphoris was about equal to the Temple log, and thereby we gauge the rebi’ith of [wine for] Passover.9 R. Johanan said: The ancient tomanta which was in Tiberias exceeded this by a quarter, and thereby we gauge the rebi’ith of [wine for] Passover. R. Hisda said: The rebi’ith of the Torah10 is [the cubic content of a vessel] two fingerbreadths square by two and seven-tenths11 fingerbreadths in depth. **

God is indivisible but also three persons, who created the Universe in Seven days.

Each day is 1/7th of a week.

While you may consume 1/2 of the types of the available species of the Eucharist at Mass, you still consume the whole Body and Blood of Christ if you do so.

The priest fractions the consecrated host.

A baby cannot be created with one half of the available genders, therefore you represent 1/2 of what it required to make a new whole.

Fractions aren’t evil. They can’t be. There is too much good associated with them.

As for finding numerical ‘codes’ in the Bible… well that’s just hogwash. You can find numerical ‘patterns’ in anything if you look hard enough. It doesn’t mean anything though, other than the universe seems to exist in various repeated predictable and/or divisible ways.

We all know that numbers, such as the numbers three and 40-days, have biblical meaning, but what about fractions? I heard that fractions represent extreme evil.
Of course they do: 0.666 is the number of the millibeast.

^This.

I think it is rather uncharitable to talk like that about protestant ministers.

Are numbers, such as 3, 7, and 40, just coincidental in the bible or do they contain specific information borrowed from mysticism?.

I love all the puns in this thread!! lol.

Just to make sure you know, guys, 22/7 isn’t EXACTLY pi. It’s slightly bigger.

It’s a sign of disrespect and pompousness.
You, my friend, are a sign of pompousness. You are taking the lightheartedness of the people posting on this thread as a personal insult, and showing yourself to be quite humorless.

We have already given you your answer. What are you doing listening to Protestant ministers’ convoluted ideas as a Catholic, anyway? What is your pet peeve against science and mathematics all about? Why can’t you just accept the things around you in a positive instead of a negative light?

Why can’t you just join in the lighthearted mood which this thread has taken, instead of acting like an angry preschool teacher scolding students who are cheerfully going about their homework?

It will come back to you!

To infer that numbers do not have mystical significance is to be naive and blind.

Numbers have no more significance than that they are numbers. Fractional or whole, they are simply quantifiers.

What symbolic meanings may be attached to them are attached by us.

Yes, nature has a series of interesting numerical patterns - the golden ratio, prime numbers, etc… but they’re only interesting because we make them so.

Some of the numbers in the New Testament are not to be taken literally anyway - for example, the Jews had limits in their language to being able to quantify very large numbers.

That’s why you’ll hear phrases like “7 times 70” - the counting system at the time was very different to our denary system (hey look, a numerical word that sounds like a religious word!).

There may be traditional reasons why certain numbers are prevalent, but they represent nothing more than the way in which humans use number. There’s absolutely nothing supernatural about them.

Then you are forever condemned. You have 2,930 posts here on CAF. That means at some point you posted your 665th post, and you also posted your 667th post. I leave it to you to work out what you did between those two events.

Numerology is infinitely flexible, and can be used to show a great many things, most of which are wrong. Better watch out when you hit 3,042 posts because 3,042 = 666 in base 22. You can set up a simple spreadsheet to tell you which numbers equate to 666 in various bases.

I’m not talking about superstitious behavior involving numbers, but those that are published within the Holy Bible. The number 3,042, for example, does not interest me because it’s not in the Holy Bible.

So you ARE interested in being superstitious about the numbers in the Bible. That’s what we’ve been trying to tell you to stop doing in this thread…

Maybe that’s what they mean when they complain about division in the Church.
