The Pope criticised the tendency some prelates have of pushing lay people who do a lot of great work in their parishes - they may be great organisers, for example - to be come deacons. Another thing that often happens, Francis said in his off-the-cuff address to representatives of Italian diocesan broadcasters, is that “when there is a lay person who does a good job and is committed, their parish priest goes to the local bishop – and this happened to me in Buenos Aires – and says: “Why don’t we make him a deacon?” This is a mistake: if we have a good lay person, let him carry on being just that,” the Pope stressed.

In examining Francis’s comments, I think it is a message to the laity more that to bishops priest or deacons.
There are those within the church who continue to clamor that women should be able to be priest and even more discussion that women should be able to be ordained as deacons.
His indication is to the importance of the laity in the life of the church and that the laity needs to first fully fill that role.
Think of what the life of the church if even 20% of the faithful fully participated in the life of their parish and church, 50% did so it would change we would be an unstoppable force for good in the world.
The deaconate is a call to a specific kind of service in the church. The Church is called to service and the deacon is that visible sign of Christ Service in the world.
A man who follows the path to ordination may or may not be a leader in his community. The priest might suggest that he become a deacon, but in the end it is the man’s own discernment to if the path is one he want to live.

I wonder if the Pope thinks that EMHC’s are an example of lay people being “clericalised”?

I would think it an example of the laity serving the needs of the church, same for readers.I wonder if the Pope thinks that EMHC’s are an example of lay people being “clericalised”?
I say this as all indications that he is a strong supporter of the Second Vatican Council and his comments reflect the importance of the involvement o the laity reflected there.
