I am curious…what sets the Third Order Regular apart from other Franciscan orders? How is it different from the rest?

I’ve looked on their main site but can not find any info as to why they are any different from other Franciscan orders.

Thank you.

Rock,

The answer can get a bit complicated so will list a link that gives a rather historical account
newadvent.org/cathen/06217a.htm

A thumbnail would be:[present day]

First Order: Friars Minor [Three Branches]
consisting of Friars Minor, Friars Minor Capuchins, Friars Minor Conventuals.
**Second Order **: The [Poor Ladies or now ]Poor Clares

And then the Third Order : Divided into

Regular [Religious]

Most “Third Order Regular” have ministries that meet a particular need in the church… and so while they follow the franciscan rule… their constitutions adapt the rule to the way of life for their community.
or Secular [SFO]

As I said space probably won’t permit a longer answer so you might try the weblink above…hope this helps… Blessings of Peace and Good.:angel1:

Thank you, Poor Clare tobe…congrats on that, by the way 🙂

What I was kind of asking was: does Franciscan TOR have any different charism or ‘purpose’ than other Franciscan orders?

[Thank You… Once debts from family obligations are paid off… I hope to be with a Poor Clare community]

Basically yes as the different "Third Order Regular " Orders serve many different needs within the church and each Order has a different charism based on how their founder or foundress chose to use the original rule of St Francis as the basis for their order.

There are only a handful of approved rules in the church. It is the communities charisms or purposes that make each community unique.
Some teach , some teach poor minorities, some preach, some run soup kitchens , some run shelters, each is unique or they would not exist or have been approved.
I am less well versed on how the third order differs from the First Order [in regards to the different communites of priests who are TOR or OFM… again it comes down to basic charisms or community rules]

I hope this helps somewhat… blessings

Hi Rock,

I am going to be a postulant with the TOR’s (Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Province) in a little over two weeks. While I haven’t officially been taught the details of the charisms, I thought that I would try to answer this question for you. I am not sure which website you checked out as each province has its own site in addition to a general one for the Order. This link might help you out, though.

franciscanstor.org/life.htm

One of the main charisms of the TOR’s is ongoing conversion. The TOR’s try to live their lives in such a manner that they recognize their own faults and failings and then turn from them to live a life more centered on Jesus and his Gospel message. The goal is to become as close to being like Christ as possible, recognizing that until the day they day, there is still more conversion that can take place.

The province that I will be joining also has a strong background in teaching. The province runs two universities Saint Francis University and Franciscan University of Steubenville, as well as a high school. There are friars that teach math, chemistry, and theology. There may be friars who teach other subjects as well.

Campus ministry work is important, among this includes the Festivals of Praise and retreats at Steubenville, as well as the developing Nights of Worship at St. Francis. Obviously sacramental responsibilities are also included.

The friars are also active in other areas, but I hope that this small sampling helps you with what the TOR’s do and what their charisms are.

PaulJohns,
Congratulations on [almost] being a postulant… You will be in my prayers… and if I may I shall pass your name on to the Poor Clare sisters for your continued vocation success.
I will be thinking of you this weekend during the Feast of the Portiuncula. Blessings of Peace and all Good!

Thank you Poor Clare tobe! You will be in mine as well. Prayers from holy women, especially the Poor Clares [and soon-to-be Poor Clares] are very efficacious so please do pass my name on. I appreciate it! 👍 How long until you’re in the Poor Clares?

I am praying that it will be withing the year.*… I am one of those lucky ones that found a community which might accept late vocations… but the family debt which is massive must be repaid first]
Blessings of Peace and All Good

[And will carry my prayers for you, while I visit for the Feast of St Clare] :angel1:*
