Thank you. We must always remember to give thanks to God who calls us and to our Holy Father Dominic for his outstanding witness. He is a model of fidelity to truth, contemplation and kindness. If ever there was a humble man, Dominic is it.
Indeed, God deserves all praise! However I do feel that it is necessary to thank those who are receptive to God, and whom God works through.
I will never forget how he approached Pope Innocent with his rule for his Brother Preachers and was told, “No new rules.” He humbly accepted the Rule of St. Augustine. Eight months later, Francis arrives on the scene with his rule and Pope Innocent gives it his blessing. Dominic was filled with so much joy that he wrote into the Dominican’s constitution that they should always honor, protect and love the Franciscans.
I love this story, and share it often with others. As someone who is quite choleric and often can take charge of things, it spoke deeply to me about how there’s times that when I am not in authority, I should take joy through obedience. God set that on my heart, and I see the positives it has brought in my life.

And know that the constitution remains; you will always have us on your side, through prayer and anything else.
You have chosen well, my dear friend. Dominic will be an excellent teacher for you. Keep your eyes on his kindness. Remember, what makes the Order of Preachers true brothers, is not their knowledge, but their love. It is easy to learn, it is difficult to love.
Amen, my Brother. Amen. As someone who comes from an abusive background, there are personality traits I have picked up which for years made it difficult to love others, even those who were kind to me. I find as I progress on this journey through Dominican spirituality, it is becoming less difficult to love others as it has been in the past.

Your journey is different than mine, but I have zero doubts God will continue to set things up in such a fashion that you will progress on this journey, and grow with your Brothers. He will bring people and things into your life, and I can safely say that you will look back and think “that makes sense that it happened that way”, despite that while it was happening you had no idea what was going on 🙂

The Lord will bless you, and he will certain bless your community. I can think of no better Patrons than the ones you selected, and I know that the Holy Innocents, and all children who have died within the womb, will add their prayers and intersession too.

I’m not sure if this goes here or not. However, since I have one or two friends in Tradom, I wanted to share good news and not so good news.

First the good news:

My community, Fratres Franciscani Vitae (Franciscan Brothers of Life, a community of men that began with three Franciscans is growing and received the blessing of the Archbishop of Miami to exercise its ministry in that diocese, open houses, continue receiving vocations, form more brothers and receive the profession of vows in the name of the Church. We are now an autonomous institute.

The Brothers of Life, as we are affectionately called, are the voice of Christ to those who need to hear his voice and the voice of the voiceless (unborn, immigrant poor, chronically and terminally ill, elderly and people with disabilities). The brothers serve in crisis pregnancy centers as counselors and educators. We started Project Joseph, an education program for fathers contemplating abortion and we work with about 30 fathers per month. Our brothers work at a Catholic hospital as chaplains, where they educate doctors, nurses, patients and their families on the right to life of every human being, especially the terminally ill. They spend the nights in prayer with relatives and patients waiting for God to call the patient home.

The brothers also serve the immigrant poor, providing them with material assistance: clothing, furniture, food, medication, medical care, dental care and transportation. We evangelize through unconditional love and mercy. As our Holy Father Francis, we let our walking do our talking. You’d be surprised at the number of questions that people have after they get to know the brothers.

The unborn get special attention from us. We “adopt” every preborn child. During the pregnancy, the brothers pray for the child and the parents who are debating whether or not to keep the child. We offer to stay with the child until the age of two. We provide medical care, food, clothing, baby supplies, baby furniture and parenting classes for moms and dads where they can earn parent dollars to buy these things for their babies. We are there 24/7 when a parent wants us. Along with protecting the life of the unborn, the other most important mission of the brothers is to educate parents on the meaning of family and marriage.

The elderly also get their share of attention. One of our brothers is especially good with the little old ladies. They love him to death, whether he’s taking Holy Communion to them or scrubbing their floor. We make it a special point to ensure that every older person whom we know gets a visit from one of his or her adopted sons (brothers). We know that the elderly have a special place in God’s heart and in his plan of salvation. Were not Sara, Abraham, Elizabeth and Zechariah elderly? Where would we be without them? The elderly are essential to man’s salvation. The Mother of God herself rushed to the side of her elderly cousin in her time of need.

… We hope that we can bring them back to Christ through our gift of self.

The brothers not only work. Our life is about prayer, Eucharist, penance, poverty, brotherhood with each other, devotion to the Blessed Mother. She is the virgin made church. Above all, we vow unquestioning obedience to the Church as practiced by our Holy Father. We renew the Church from within, not as her judge, but as her servants. We open our fraternity to secular men who wish to share in the life and charism of the brothers, while remaining in their homes. They are not subservient or an appendage to the fraternity. They are truly our brothers with equal rights and equal obligations to live the Gospel and to preach it through every gesture and every contact with the voiceless. They are to be the advocates of the voiceless, within the Church and society. They make the voiceless Christ heard. Who is the voiceless Christ? He is the one who says, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

The motto of the Franciscans of Life is “Vitam ad vitam vocat”

Now that not so good news:

Yours truly has been selected to be the Superior General. I have chosen a motto for my seal. **“Deus eligit stultus” (God chooses the fool). ** I ask for your prayers that I may serve my brothers as a mother cares for her newborn child, with tenderness, compassion, understanding, infinite love and patience and above all, obedient to the Father’s will for them, as Joseph and Mary were obedient to His will for their son.

The brothers know that my health is poor and that I’m living on borrowed time. I asked not be named Superior General; but God always has other plans. Pray for me, that I will suffer what I have to suffer for the sanctification of my brothers, the strengthening of their resolve to follow the poor and crucified Christ, and their fidelity to the Church. That is all that I can do for them. May God have mercy on my soul, for I am now responsible for the souls of others who are my sons and brothers.

I told the Lord, “You put me into this situation. I have no idea what I’m doing. You could have chosen someone healthier and more intelligent. What were you thinking? Well Lord, it doesn’t matter now. You’ve done it. Now you have to walk with me through the night and be my light.”

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
Vaazhthugal!!! (Congratulations and best wishes)

Congratulations Bro! and Many prayers for your community. I have no doubt the Lord will see that your efforts continue to bare sweet and tangible fruit.

That is wonderful news!! I’m sure you will be an excellent Superior.

I wish your community had a counterpart for women.

May the Lord continue to shine His face upon you Bro! Great news! Can a carmelite pray for you? 😃 Prayers and thanksgiving…🙂

A number of women have asked. Several years ago we discussed it and decided that it would not be appropriate to start Franciscans Sisters of Lfie, because there is already the Sisters of Life in NY, which are Augustinian. There are also the Carmelite Sisters of Charity in DC. They too are very involved in pro-life ministry. The CCV. as they are called, are an international congregation. They are absolutely awesome. I had the honor of working with them and training in pro-life ministry under them for three years while teaching at the WTU many years ago. I would never want to compete with them or the Sisters of Life

In her wisdom, the Church discourages duplicating charism.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

Brother, I just saw this. It is good to know that God never makes a mistake, even though we might think so at times.

Lately, I have wondered why the finger of God seems to rest on some and not on others. Now I know why. May I borrow your motto for myself (“Deus eligit stultus” [God chooses the fool])?

You are in my prayers! Pray for us too.

That paragraph struck a deep chord Br JR. I pray for the success of your order and to your good health. Of all the posters here, you are the one that seems to calm my demons the most.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
Code:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

Be my guest. There is no copyright on it. I stole it from Sacred Scripture, 1Cor 1:28 - 31.

Once upon a time, I believed that this passage meant that God chose the simple to confuse others who were arrogant. Today, I believe that the fool and the arrogant are all in one person. God chooses those of us who are arrogant to show us how foolish we are to believe that we can do anything without him. Through out own foolishness, teaches us to be depend on him.

At the end of the day, total dependence on Divine Providence is the highest expression of obedience, poverty and chastity.

In obedience, we surrender to the voice of God, even when the night is dark. Like St. John of the Cross says, we step into the night, unable to see, trusting that the hand of God will guide us. The only light is what we know, not what we feel.

This kind of obedience requires poverty. We must give up ownership of our lives, our wishes, our plans and desires. This begins with externals and works its way inward. We begin to practice detachment by giving up things and work inward until we reach the point where we have to give up ownership of ourselves.

However, surrendering the self to the Beloved, out of pure love for Him, is the definition of perfect chastity. Chastity is not the same as celibacy. Celibacy is to give up marriage for the sake of the Kingdom. Chastity is to give up self in love for the other, whether it be through marriage or through a celibate life.

In any case, dependence on Providence is expressed through the ideals of obedience, poverty and chastity. Everyone is called to live the Evangelical Counsels. To most people, only a fool would believe in such a way of life.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

It is true - the fool and the arrogant are all in one person.

Dear Brother JR, I just want to add my congratulations prayers for you and your community.

How many Brothers are you responsible for?

As far as being a leader, delegate, delegate and delegate.
Then follow up.

If you try to do it all, you’ll suffer both mentally and physically. I am proud to “know” you, if only in the virtual world. I read almost all your posts. Thank you for being a light in the darkness!

Though I don’t as post as much as I could, I always seek out your posts for their sincerity,compassion and insight. I think I speak for most of CAF when I say that what you’ve said and typed on here has impacted us all greatly.

And, of course you’re a leader! Heck, I would call you a leader of the forum here. Your posts usually bring calm and enlightenment and help us all understand our Catholic faith better.

Congratulations and I’ll make sure to keep praying for you!

Holy Martyrs of Vietnam and Our Lady of Czestochowa, pray for Brother JR!
And I second this post.

Our Lord has graced you with many gifts, Brother. Thank you for bringing them here to CAF. You were and have been a “light in the darkness” to me as well.

Br. JR all I heard was good news, where is the bad? 😉
I am sure you will do good as superiors through the grace of God. You have experience dealing with member of CAF and had much patients with many of us including yours truly.

BTW what is Tradom?

Congratulations on your wonderful news! The Holy Spirit makes no mistakes…I know you trust you will be given all that you need to do His will.

God bless you and your brothers!

Tradom is a word that I picked up here on CAF. I can’t remember who introduced it. But it refers to the world of the Traditionalist Catholics.
Congratulations on your wonderful news! The Holy Spirit makes no mistakes……I know you trust you will be given all that you need to do His will.

God bless you and your brothers!
This is the most consoling thought that I’ve heard to date. Thank you.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

Congratulations 🙂 You have been a blessing to us here, providing some much needed balance to discussions and an incredible amount of knowledge which I know I have benefited from as someone new to Catholism. I am sure you will be a humble and competent leader, may God bless you and your Brothers.

You and your community are in my prayers, and will be one of my special intentions at Mass tonight.

This is great news and congratulations are in order, my dear Brother Jay. As I told you before, don’t worry about your new/old title.

So you think you’re “God’s Fool”, eh? Last person I heard called that was St. Francis of Assisi, so consider yourself in good company. 😃 😉

God Bless you.

CF

Thanks and glory be to God in the highest! 🙂

I know you feel you don’t deserve what you were given, but let Mary’s fiat be yours. May our Blessed Mother’s life be your guiding star. As one Franciscans of Life brother here in CAF used to say: “We must never lose sight of the Immaculate.” 👍

You and your brothers will always be in my prayers.

PS: what does vitam ad vitam vocat mean? when will you start using the FFV?

God bless you, brother.
