Thanks and glory be to God in the highest! 🙂

I know you feel you don’t deserve what you were given, but let Mary’s fiat be yours. May our Blessed Mother’s life be your guiding star. As one Franciscans of Life brother here in CAF used to say: “We must never lose sight of the Immaculate.” 👍

You and your brothers will always be in my prayers.

PS: what does vitam ad vitam vocat mean? when will you start using the FFV?

God bless you, brother.
The motto of the new community is “Vitam ad vitam vocat,” (Life calls out to life).

We switch over to FFV after Easter. It’s a little like getting married and changing from your née name to your spouse’s name. Some things are just to complicated to change.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

“I know God will not give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish He didn’t trust me so much.”

I don’t know if Mother Teresa actually said those words… but if she did… I guess most Superiors feel the same way as you do, Brother Jay. 🙂

Br. JR all I heard was good news, where is the bad? 😉
I am sure you will do good as superiors through the grace of God. You have experience dealing with member of CAF and had much patients with many of us including yours truly.

BTW what is Tradom?
It’s very funny that you should say this. I was talking to one of the priests who posts on CAF, a good friend of mine. I was sharing with him that when I first came to CAF I took a lot of bashing and rejection from some posters, because I was not a priest. They would agree with me and pay attention to what I had to say until they found out that I was not a priest. They had some kind of strange idea that religious brothers could not be theologians, teachers, formators, etc. Now, I feel that many people on CAF have a very different view of religious brothers, because there are several of us on here now. People can see that we’re not odd balls or half baked priests. It has been especially nice posting along with many of the priests such as NewEnglandPriest and Fr. David and a few others who are very kind and defer to the brothers on the site.

If I have made a difference on CAF, I believe that it’s in this area. I’m hoping that people who know the other brothers here and who know me would not be afraid of supporting a son who wants to be a brother. The usual is to push him to be a priest, because it’s a “higher rank”, which is not true at all. It’s like comparing apples and tomatoes, just because they’re both red and they’re fruits.

I hope that I have given people a better image of what a brother is really about and how God uses him. for the good of the Church.
Congratulations 🙂 You have been a blessing to us here, providing some much needed balance to discussions and an incredible amount of knowledge which I know I have benefited from as someone new to Catholism. I am sure you will be a humble and competent leader, may God bless you and your Brothers.
I hope so. I certainly have to be humble. We have a few men who are absolutely brilliant and very holy too.
This is great news and congratulations are in order, my dear Brother Jay. As I told you before, don’t worry about your new/old title.

So you think you’re “God’s Fool”, eh? Last person I heard called that was St. Francis of Assisi, so consider yourself in good company. 😃 😉

God Bless you.

CF
He certainly played the role and at the same time, was wise beyond his years. This was a very young man when he started out.

I look back on St. Francis and I shiver a little. Our community is where those original brothers were in 1209. It’s young, small and has a big mission ahead of it. We have to keep it together, but we also have to make it grow. Only God will send the vocations, but we have to do our part. We have to be witnesses. Francis worked very hard on that during the early years. He was not trying to recruit, but he was trying to keep the brothers together and to be witnesses. It was a lot of work. It’s more work than when you have a community with a history of 100 years and 500 members. It’s already in motion. You don’t have to keep it together and keep it moving. You just have to keep it on track.
Thanks and glory be to God in the highest! 🙂

I believe that I told you that. 😃

I’m not sure if this goes here or not. However, since I have one or two friends in Tradom, I wanted to share good news and not so good news.

First the good news:

My community, Fratres Franciscani Vitae (Franciscan Brothers of Life, a community of men that began with three Franciscans is growing and received the blessing of the Archbishop of Miami to exercise its ministry in that diocese, open houses, continue receiving vocations, form more brothers and receive the profession of vows in the name of the Church. We are now an autonomous institute.

The motto of the Franciscans of Life is “Vitam ad vitam vocat”
Congratulations on the new Status of the Fratres Franciscani Vitae. That’s wonderful news!
Now that not so good news:

Yours truly has been selected to be the Superior General. I have chosen a motto for my seal. **“Deus eligit stultus” (God chooses the fool). ** I ask for your prayers that I may serve my brothers as a mother cares for her newborn child, with tenderness, compassion, understanding, infinite love and patience and above all, obedient to the Father’s will for them, as Joseph and Mary were obedient to His will for their son.

The brothers know that my health is poor and that I’m living on borrowed time. I asked not be named Superior General; but God always has other plans. Pray for me, that I will suffer what I have to suffer for the sanctification of my brothers, the strengthening of their resolve to follow the poor and crucified Christ, and their fidelity to the Church. That is all that I can do for them. May God have mercy on my soul, for I am now responsible for the souls of others who are my sons and brothers.

I told the Lord, “You put me into this situation. I have no idea what I’m doing. You could have chosen someone healthier and more intelligent. What were you thinking? Well Lord, it doesn’t matter now. You’ve done it. Now you have to walk with me through the night and be my light.”

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
Br. JR, this is also wonderful news for the Fratres Franciscani Vitae. The Holy Spirit will guide you as he always has according to his design, and you have followed with a Franciscan heart. Peace and all good to you, Brother JR. And Happy Easter.

May God bless you and your community Brother JR. You have been a source of catechesis for me and I very much appreciate your generosity and the gentleness of your approach.
It seems to me that catechesis is one way that your community could help others to understand what it means to be Pro-Life, that forums such as this are a way of delivering your message and, I hope, making disciples of all nations. Perhaps this could justify your continuing to post, or designating a position within your community for using the internet to as a forum for catechesis and evangelization?

Wonderful news! I will be praying for the Brothers of Life and for you specifically.

We went to the beautiful program developed by the NY Sisters of Life at World Youth Day. They do a wonderful job! I am absolutely sure that your brothers will be just as helpful to the work doing what you have already started!

God bless you! Happy Easter!!

Happy Easter everyone!

I just finished a very nice Easter meal. I believe I gained five pounds. 😃

Shhhhh . . . don’t tell my endocronologist and my cardiologist. They freak out when I go off my diet, because of heart and diabetes. My cardiologist once said to me, “Brother, I don’t believe in miracles, but how you’re still here and kicking is a mystery to me.” He complains about everything that I do. I told him, “If you believed in miracles, all of your mysteries would be resolved for nothing is impossible for God. There is the answer to your mysteries.”
Congratulations on the new Status of the Fratres Franciscani Vitae. That’s wonderful news!
Thank you. The hard work lays ahead. You can’t just inherit a community. It’s a plant. You have to water it and help it grow. This is an emerging community. A lot has to be done to help it grow in order to reach the many preborn and their parents, chronically and terminally ill, their caregivers and family, the poor with disabilities and the immigrant poor. These people don’t have the luxury of time. Their lives are being threatened by the culture of death. We have to pray that God sends more brothers, both religious and secular. We need both.

The voiceless are in great danger. Especially with what is happening in our country right now. They need someone to deliver Christ’s message on their behalf. Christ wants to shout out for them, but he needs our voice.

My first challenge is vocations and good formation.

Thank you again. The Holy Spirit got me into this mess. He had better hang around now. I was superior once before, when I was with my old community. I thought God would have learned his lesson by now.
May God bless you and your community Brother JR. You have been a source of catechesis for me and I very much appreciate your generosity and the gentleness of your approach.

You’re very right. I’d like to start something online to promote the culture of life. As I watch everything that is happening with the HHS mandate and I read some of the things that people post in the Cath News Forum, blogs and on news sites, it is clear that we have failed to provide good catechesis on human sexuality, love, conception, aging, sickness, suffering, poverty and despair. We need to get back to the Gospel where Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of my brethren, you did it for me.”

We need to spread the news that God is a God of life. The empty tomb proves that Christ is Life itself. He calls out to life. We can’t kill our infants, sick and elderly or let the immigrant poor die because we won’t provide medical care or food. The God who calls out to life will look at us and say, “I was helpless and you left me to die.”

I love the Sisters of Life (SV). Our ministries are parallel. There are two differences. With regards to the unborn, they focus on the mother and we focus on the father, which is appropriate. With regard to the spiritual life of the community and daily life, the Sisters of Life are Augustinians. They follow the Rule of St. Augustine. The overlap between Augustine and Francis is in the belief that Christ is love incarnate. Everything begins with love. Neither believed in what we like to call, “tough love”. They talked a tough line, but they were teddy bears with sinners. They learned from Paul, “Love is gentle. Love is patient. Love endures all things. etc.” Francis adds to that, Love is never in your face. It never confronts and never provokes. Love always invites.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, FFV 🙂

Happy Easter, Brother. And Happy Easter to all my fellow posters. 🙂

God bless you Br. Jr and your community. You are in my prayers.

Hi Bro. JR,

Will the FFV establish houses/provinces in other countries?

Hi Bro. JR,

Will the FFV establish houses/provinces in other countries?
I have no idea.

Right now, my only dream is to go where God sends me.

I once thought about this, when we started on this adventure. “What if . . . ?” Then it dawned on me, “What if you let God do the driving?”

Fraternally,

Br. JR, FFV 🙂

I do hope and pray that God sends some of your brothers to other countries, most especially in the Third World. Even in a predominantly Catholic country like ours, we hear of fetuses being thrown out with the garbage, then citing poverty as the reason.

I also wanted to say thanks for making things even more complicated for those of us who are making the attempt at understanding the Franciscan family… :banghead:

😃

Hang on to your parachute, because the Franciscan family is going through a great renewal period. St. Francis is probably very happy. It’s his dream come true.

There are many Franciscans who are following one of his rules and responding to the Poor and Crucified Christ in many situations that Francis never imagined. Not only are they responding; but they’re being quite creative in the forms of community that they’re forming. During the last 20 years we have seen the birth of at least 20 Franciscan communities in the USA alone.

They all follow the same father. All are faithful to the same vocation: To live the Gospel in obedience, without property and in chastity. But the structures are varying. Today we have:

religious orders
secular orders
religious congregations
secular institutes
societies of apostolic life
monasteries

and all are Franciscan. Not a single letter of the Rule is lost. But the blanks in the rule, because of situations and questions that Francis never foresaw are being filled in by discerning Christ’s wishes as he speaks through the Rule, the Church and the world around us.

In essence, we’re moving into the future, by going back to the year 1209.

In my own case, I’m very excited. Our “new” community is very much like Francis and his first 10 brothers. They were neither fish nor fowl. They were neither clerics nor monks.

They went to Pope Innocent for his approval. He told them to go out and live the Gospel according to their rule and invited them to come back when they had grown in numbers. All they really had was his blessing They had no power, no parish, no house, no special place in the Church. Just the pope’s blessing and the promise that he would give them more, when they grew. He didn’t even give them a picnic basket for their trip back to Assisi. It would be 14 years before Pope Honorius III would write his papal bull declaring the Franciscan Rule to be of Divine Inspiration not to be touched by any man, except another pope.

For 14 years, the brothers prayed, did penance, served God’s people and lived in as a family with all of the challenges that come from family life. However, this was a family without security and without a promise for the future, just plain and simple dependence on God and trust in the Church’s goodwill.

That’s where we are. We’re not going to be part of any large protective institution. We’re going to be a group of simple men living as brothers to each other and to the voiceless Christ, without a permanent place in the Church, but still very much inside the Church and under her scrutiny. We belong to the Church. She is our mother and our spiritual protector. But she is also giving God and us room to work. She’s not interfering by giving us some big project and some definite security. Our only security is God.

We will have all of the graces that come with being sons of the Church and none of the security and protection. We have no money. We have no buildings. We have a lot of work to do. We need more brothers, consecrated and secular. We’re going to need a bigger roof over our heads. We’re going to need more resources to serve the voiceless Christ. But we’re not asking the Church to give us anything except her blessing and her guidance. We’re fortunate to have a Vicar for Religious who is a very holy woman and very helpful in her suggestions. I truly love her. She’s like a mother and a sister all rolled into one. If anyone ever says anything to me about women in places of authority in the Church, I’ll stick my tongue out at them.

If you want to be free as a lark and poor as church mouse, join us. You will need to work hard. Because you’re going to be like Francis and his early brothers. You’re going to be putting up the building, not moving into one that is well established.

It’s an exhilarating feeling and scary too. I am not going to lie and say that I’m not afraid. I am very much afraid. But my heart tells me that if the Church has given us the blessing to give it a try, then it must be an opportunity that comes from God and it cannot be wasted. Jesus is waiting to take us on a journey. It’s up to us to respond. I truly believe that it’s a sin to make God waste his time when he could be giving it to someone who’s going to make good use of it.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, FFV 🙂

Just saw this thread. Congrats for you and your Order. It is a blessing to the entire Franciscan brotherhood. The big downside that I see is that this will probably mean less time on here.

I hope that your duties of leadership can be well balanced with your prayer life.

Pax et bonum
