A friend of a quarter-century duration ‘shared’ a ‘like’ on facebook – the red equals sign from the gay-advocacy group Human Rights Campaign. I communicated to him what this meant & on doing his research, he realized that he had confused the group with Human Rights Watch. He retracted his posting with a clarification.
It made me realize that the “marriage equality” campaign has been effective because of PR misrepresentation, often confusing busy Catholics who think that support for the human rights of each person translates into support for equality in the institution of marriage. I recommend Josef Pieper’s “Abuse of Language, Abuse of Power” in concert with George Orwell’s “Politics and the English Language” to consider how to combat the deliberate obfuscation of the matter.
This friend has long been a fervent Catholic, so even someone who was certain that he was very familiar with Church teaching was misled by the campaign.
