He just wears the white undergarment part. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I took that as not wearing vestments.
The alb. Yes, the chasuble (outer garment) is absolutely required unless there is some sort of extenuating circumstance like deadly heat, or if there is no chasuble to be had.

Yes, the chasuble and stole are neccessary. If concelebrating, the stole is required and the chasuble is still recommended.

Still wearing only the alb is pretty unprecedented. weird

If he’s freelancing the Eucharistic Prayer, I have serious doubts as to whether or not one is actually receiving the Body and Blood of our Savior during one of his Masses.
I wondered about that the times I’ve been there with my husband and questioned whether I should receive or not.

In regards to only wearing the alb, this was even at weddings, funerals, Christmas(!), etc. Everything was soo casual. Everyone there who is defending him says that those ‘minor details’ don’t matter but there was absolutely no reverence in the church. Please say a few Hail Mary’s and pray for this parish’s future. The whole community is fighting the Bishop’s decision with tooth and nail.

Perhaps the bigger concern should be whether the Mass is valid or not. You don’t have to receive even if it is a valid sacrament but you do have to fulfill the Sunday obligation.

From the sounds of it, though, I doubt whether the Mass is invalid, as the bishop probably would have said something about the Mass itself.

It was mistranslated way back when by men with the same mindset as this priest, then the corrections were stymied by more of the same.

The Spanish translation was done correctly initially, so all this hubbub is nothing to them. Once in a great while I go to a Spanish Mass, and sure enough, there are THREE mea culpas.

As my pastor explained it in a homily, the Mass is the prayer of the WHOLE Church, so we ought to ALL be praying the same thing, even if it is in different languages.
That is what I mean, the mass was done incorrectly than for how many years before the missal??? It’s troublesome either way.

I don’t think he was “let go” as the headline proclaims. He’s 72 and the bishop asked for his “resignation” which mostly likely means he resigned as pastor or active ministry. I would assume he is simply retired now. And according to the article he’s collecting an Air Force pension which means he’ll live quite comfortably the rest of his life…

I attend this church, and my children the school, and I am saddened by the news. I’ve not been a lifelong Catholic so I’d guess that’s why it’s not a big deal to me if something is not word for word b/c I know the Holy Spirit works through people not scripts. But what saddens me the most is people like charlene here who are more concerned with “religion” and rules than they are the Word and the Spirit… you all remind me of the Pharisees. It also makes me realize why the Reformation was a success. I don’t care what any of you OR Rome says, whether a priest has on full regalia or not is NO issue to me and I’ll bet my life it makes no difference to Jesus Christ. This whole issue disgusts me; it’s nothing more than gossipy, nitpicking, “religious” zealots who should be minding their own business. And that includes our Bishop. I wish someone would peek into his closet, b/c from what I’ve read he’s made some questionable decisions over time. And also the fact that the Catholic church sees fit to look so closely into a matter like this that it comes to Father Bill’s resignation or firing, yet has simply looked the other time and again at clergy who have repeatedly abused children, DISGUSTS me.

You obviously have a very limited understanding of the Church and Jesus Christ.

Yes. I’m sure I do. I’ve attended church my whole life, have read the bible over and over, have a close relationship with God, but I’m sure that based on my opinion over the bishop and our priest, and the lack of following the man made rituals instead of the Spirit, that you are indeed correct. Good call!

and charlene- I hope you don’t go to hell for receiving from such a priest  But I guess if you do, you’ll be there along with the rest of us.

And YoungTradCath- Your condescending, holier than thou attitude must bring new believers to the church in droves. Well done.

reported.

Ooooh… I’m super scared. What was it? My calling people “pharisees”, calling the people who started this business at my church zealots, pointing out that we have a less than reputable bishop, or that I pointed out the CC does more to persecute those who don’t read the Mass verbatim than they do child abusers?? ALL TRUTH. Deal with it, ban me, block me, I do not care. I try to live according to God, not by the Catholic church. Unfortunately, many do it the other way around.

Well, if that’s all he was wearing then he certainly wasn’t properly vested.

It’s a difficult situation. The Bishop likely didn’t want to upset the parishioners but he couldn’t have a priest free-wheeling things to the extent this fellow was. We are moving towards more faithful use of the liturgical texts which, I believe, is a good thing. It’s unfortunate that anyone would feel mistreated by the whole affair.

I can feel for the Priest, the parishioners, and for the Bishop.

Me too. The whole situation is really sad. Like I said, please keep this parish in your prayers. They are really hurting. 😦
