The same may very well happen in The Netherlands.

Sea change leaves politicians tiliting at old windmills

Although pratically the entire article sounds like the EU rejection vote is about “subsidized” “Bible-Belt” “right-wingers” (how’s that?), later on it admits:

Even though the Netherlands was a founding member of the EU, has boasted of its European credentials, and has lent its place names to the treaties of Amsterdam and Maastricht, opinion polls suggest that its people will reject the constitution by two to one.

It is to laugh. 😛

I have to admit to a certain ambivalence at this turn of events. It was a 21st century solution to a 19th century problem. And since the EU hyperstate was unsustainable economically and politically, it contained the seeds of its own destruction. So it could never attain true rivalry to the US.

But if it is dead, there may very well be hope for Britain, Germany and Poland.

An interesting turn of events so close to JPII’s death and Benedict’s election.

i was listening to radio netherlands on short wave the other night and the commentator stated that the politicians wanted the constitution but the people didn’t. looks like it is like that in other eu countries as well.

Well it becomes even more interesting with this report from the Times:

"PRESIDENT CHIRAC of France is preparing to throw Europe into confusion and put Britain on the spot by backing moves to keep the European constitution alive if it is rejected in Sunday’s referendum.

French diplomats say that M Chirac is expected to urge other countries to proceed with ratification because France does not want to be seen to be blocking the European project. Any attempt to persuade other countries to go ahead will dash the hopes of those in the British Government who believed that a French rejection would make a British referendum unnecessary…"

From Hal Lindsey’s column:

"The British, who take over the European Union’s rotating presidency in June, may well press for a declaration that the process is dead to avoid having to hold its own referendum.
The Netherlands is also in doubt – so much so that E.U. Parliament President Josep Borrell issued a dark warning to the Dutch on Tuesday, saying, “It is difficult to imagine Europe without the Netherlands.”

The Dutch vote comes three days after the French, and the latest polls show the Dutch plan to reject the proposed constitution, as well. Borrell warned that a Dutch “no” would prevent the constitution from coming into force, and, to underscore the seriousness, expressly ruled out the treaty’s renegotiation.

The French view the E.U. constitution as an “Anglo-Saxon” document designed to enshrine “Thatcherite policies” they say will devastate the social balance of Europe. The wider implications of a “no” vote are unclear, but there is already some discussion of renegotiating a “core Europe” solution.

A “core Europe” model would move forward without Britain and other “undesirables” – such being defined as those European states that supported the U.S. war in Iraq. The idea of a “core Europe” – with France and Germany at the center moving quickly ahead with joint policies…"

I can tell you for a fact that’s been the general sentiment in Italy for the whole EU enterprise, not just the constitution - it was something Berlusconi (the prime minister) & his cronies pushed on the country in order to further their own economic interests. Bet it’s the same situation in most of the member states.
