I have a friend who is engaged. She and her fiancee plan on getting married in around 18 months.
Her fiancee is a practicing Catholic in the Marine Corps. She was Baptized as a child, but never received First Communion or Confirmation. She currently considers herself “Agnostic.”
She talked to a priest, who told her that he would not marry them unless she got confirmed and received First Communion. My friend said that she would not do this, because this is not what she believes and she would be lying.
She doesn’t know what to do. She knows that her fiancee is required to marry in the Catholic Church under penalty of sin. She views it as “he has to get married in the Catholic Church, but not to me.”
She asked me what to do. I told her that she would need to talk to the Diocese, probably needing a dispensation from the Bishop.
What else should I tell her?
