I give credit to the early men of the church in Rome for compiling the Bible into a canon and Rome, but we must know men had their hands in it.
So do you think they erred somewhere in their discernment of what books belong in the NT and what don’t?

Or do you believe that they were given the charism of infallibility?

QUOTE=PRmerger;9947300]I ask the question, then, that apologist Mark Shea asks regarding veneration of Mary: how is it that some Catholics venerate her too much but that some (Protestants? people on the CAFs?) folks get it “just right”?

Where is the “just right” line of respect for Mary and how do we know where that line is?

I don’t know, seems the more some RC’s venerate Mary, the more some Prots go the other way. I think you know what I mean, extremes on both sides.

Sure. Extremism = fanaticism.

No one ought to be a fanatic. Even Jesus doesn’t call us to fanaticism.

PR- I seldom think about Mary anymore, as I use to say the Rosary. I am aware that most RC’s do not worship the Virgin Mary as some non RC’s accuse them of. Also I’m aware that some do though. The only dogma I would have an issue with is the 5th if they passed it which I doubt they will. So its not an issue with me, and anyone who would not be a RC due to the Marian dogmas I would say that is not a good reason. As we know the Virgin Mary was and is a special part of Jesus. But no where does it say she is the way to the Father as Jesus is the way and our mediator, Now if Mary brings people closer to Jesus that is fine. I dont like to see pics of Jesus as a baby or a lamb on Marys’s lap, as I do not see our God that way at all. Personally I don’t even think I myself can comprehend God but he is there and here and everywhere. There is a fine line between worship and venerate, one that should not be crossed. So I am also aware that many people worship the Bible, that is our Christian story, even Hitchens said that is the one book he was never without, it has many life lessons in it. I know every RC is different, and they all believe different things, as most people I know are RC, but to tell you the truth, many Prot. denonimations are downright scarey to me with their thoughts, and I wont join any of them . I don’t know who wrote the Nt, and we can’t even know that for sure. But we do know the ECF’s in Rome had Rome backing them and that is how it came about finally to be put in a book.

I just don’t believe in organized religion anymore, one must believe this, this is the only way to salvation, and they all have their own ways. I say whatever works for a person, I follow the techings of Jesus and if the Virgin Mary is part of that for some people that is fine, but I do believe the Bible is focused on our God.
I watched the Pillars of the Earth and now the World without End series, although fiction , all fiction has some non fiction to it. What a nighmare, the things people do in the name of God. Its still true today, not as bad. also we have to remember most people had no access to the Scriptures before the 1600’s, so they were going on what was taught. There is a lot of history of those years and most of it was not good. It makes one sick to see how people would gather around to see and watch people beinlng tortured. Say what you want about Hitchens and some of the Athesist but they made a lot of good points about organized religions. Most of it was about power, land, and money, despite the many good God fearing people who were pawns.
I’ve read and reread these two posts and cannot help but feel that you have some pent up hostilities, bitterness, and frustration stemming from some negative church related incident. If you are displeased with organized religion why do you continue to visit a Catholic forum? I think the issue lies much deeper.

Let’s just say hypothetically that organized religion becomes extinct, who will you blame when man continues to commit murderous and inhumane act of violence?

I pray one day you find a way to heal your wounds.

Tony, thanks for telling me what my problems are, little you know. The only church I’ve been a member of for over 50 some years is the RCC, and have never been to another, so if I had a negative experience which I haven’t , I am mature enough to know, I just came to not believe in some of the dogmas of the RCC anymore and instead of be a hypocrit like many RC’s I know I choose to leave. I also know at my age that I’m not going to join another religious organization.

So since I’ve had no personal problems with the church or any Priests, I have had issues with some RC’s that feel that they are just a little bit above others, and if others don’t believe what they believe , then they must have a problem, so yes I do have a problem with some RC’s, but I find most of them to be fine, but you know its always the bad ones that spoil the whole bunch. Your right I probably won’t come back here as I don’t care for people who think they are better than others, and if you won’t admit that some of the RCC history is bad news, your only fooling yourself. So thanks for reminding me of one of the reasons I left the RCC again , mainly due to some of its members.:o

That is, indeed, the noble thing to do.

However, I wouldn’t call the Catholics who stay “hypocrites”.

Many stay because they don’t know that they are supposed to believe the truths as proclaimed by the Church before they receive Communion.

Many don’t care at all what the Church teaches and stay because that’s where their family has always worshipped.

But being hypocrites? Not so much. That means they preach one thing and live the exact opposite. I don’t see most nominal Catholics as doing that.

What about, I say this delicately, Jesus’ teaching about divorce and re-marriage that are upheld in the Catholic Church?

Isn’t that one of the reasons you’ve left?

Your right I don’t want to be a hypocrit, but many are. Acutally PR I left in good standing with the Church, see my husband was one that didn’t know he needed a disposition (or whatever you call it) another stupid rule of theirs, so no problem with our marriage of 27 years.

You have a thing about divorce don’t you, too baf everyone can’t be perfect like you, espically your friends. I would thread lightly with that since you have a few dtrs, will you disown one is she divorces?

OP- I came here a RC a few years ago now, and I am leaving a Chrisitan, the reason is evident from this board, the members are what make a Church and this is one I no longer CHOOSE to be part of.

Ps: Protestants act the way they do about Mary because so many RC do in fact worship her.
