God Bless Pope Benedict !
On Oct 17th - via Motu Proprio - our Pope has clearly stressed the need for and reading of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” which was first published in the USA in March 2000.
(It has a dark green cover.)

QUOTE: “In order to arrive at a systematic knowledge of the content of the faith, all can find in the Catechism of the Catholic Church a precious and indispensable tool. It is one of the most important fruits of Vatican Council II. … It is in this sense that that the Year of Faith will have to see a concerted effort to rediscover and study the fundamental content of the faith that receives its systematic and organic synthesis in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. … The Catechism provides a permanent record of the many ways in which the Church has meditated on the faith and made progress in doctrine so as to offer certitude to believers in their lives of faith”.

“In this Year, then, the Catechism of the Catholic Church will serve as a tool providing real support for the faith, especially for those concerned with the formation of Christians, so crucial in our cultural context. To this end, I have invited the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, by agreement with the competent Dicasteries of the Holy See, to draw up a note, providing the Church and individual believers with some guidelines on how to live this Year of Faith in the most effective and appropriate ways, at the service of belief and evangelisation.” - UNQUOTE - Pope Benedict.

No Catholic home in the USA should be without a copy of the “CCC 2nd Ed”.

And where can I obtain a copy of the letter? (I already have the CCC):coffeeread:

Is there anything official that really calls it the Second Edition? I thought the more proper designation was “with modifications from the Editio Typica.” The “first edition” was translated from the original French document the team of cardinals put together (because it was the language they collectively understood best), but when the definitive Latin version was made they used it as a last chance to make some improvements to the text, and these improvements were incorporated into the volume that is sold today.

I’ve seen the idea that “this is already the second version of the Catechism to come out” used as an excuse to reject its teachings and in general the idea that Catholic doctrine does not change, so I tend to stay away from calling it a “Second Edition”. I grant though that this is a more easily understood term.

Officially the CCC first edition was first written well over 400 years ago.
The CCC second edition is called “2nd” to differentiate between the two, and it is literally only the second edition published.
The first edition is no longer in print.

When the Pope says CCC he is talking about the correct translation of the CCC that is now in effect, not the incorrect translation that came out in the USA and other English versions in the late 1990’s.

On the cover of the CCC 2nd Ed (dark green cover) you will see where it states:
revised in accordance with the official Latin text promulgated by Pope John Paul II”.
On the back cover you will see that it states the first in 400 years.
The first print date of the corrected copy is March 2000 in the USA, and you will find this on the copyright page.
(The Church does not use the incorrect copy).

This quote from the Pope JPII is on page five of the “CCC 2nd Ed” -
" The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I have approved…and the publication of which I order by virtue of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church’s faith and of Catholic Doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Church’s Magisterium. I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the Faith and thus a valid and legitimate instrument for ecclesial communion." - Pope John Paul II, with Imprimi Potest by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. "

For anyone who is interested in the changes from the **incorrect **translation of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition”
to the **CORRECT Translaction **of "Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition here is a link: scborromeo.org/ccc/updates.htm

There are only two correct/accurate “Catechism of the Catholic Church”.
The first edition, which was written more than 400 years ago, and the much more recent second edition.

The second edition which first came out with translation errors only in English in the 1990’s can not be used by anyone. (It has a beige cover)

The offical name on the accurate (dark green) cover is:
CATECHISM
of the
CATHOLIC CHURCH
SECOND EDITION
revised in accordance with the official Latin text
promulgated by Pope John Paul II

When the Pope speaks “Moto Proprio” it is for the entire world.
Therefore he only needs to state “Catechism of the Catholic Church”, since the Second Edition is the only one being used by the Church.

Huh. My softcover copy only says:
CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
WITH MODIFICATIONS FROM THE EDITIO TYPICA

The older catechism you are referring to is the Roman Catechism, also called the Catechism of the Council of Trent. I’ve never heard of it being referred to as the First Edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and I think that would be strange. Though on the broadest level the basic outline is similar, they are really entirely different works, not different editions of the same work. I assume then that the “Second Edition” on your volume refers to the fact that it’s the edition with modifications from the Editio Typica which came out in 1997, not the first edition that came out in English in 1994/1995.

The bad first translation of the original French that you refer to, which no one should use if they somehow got their hands on a rare copy of it, is that which was prepared under Cardinal Bernard Law and rejected by the Vatican. That’s distinct from the approved translation of the original French that was made after Law’s translation was rejected, which was approved and mass-published and which I suppose could still be used, though I don’t know why one would prefer it to the modified edition.

Regarding the use of the Roman Catechism, I really wouldn’t imply that its use is frowned upon by saing the newer catechism is the only one being used. The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes from the Roman Catechism several times, and my own copy of the Roman Catechism has a preface written by Cardinal Silvio Oddi (then Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Clergy), which quotes from Cardinal Ratzinger and Pope John Paul II praising the book and ends with a special endorsement of it for the United States of America. Granted this was in 1984, before work on the new Catechism had even begun, but I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume a new catechism implies the reprobation of an earlier one (especially, again, seeing as the new one quotes from the old one).

Here is the link to the Pope’s letter in entirety rather than only the article link in my post.

vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/motu_proprio/documents/hf_ben-xvi_motu-proprio_20111011_porta-fidei_en.html

Numbers 11 & 12 speak specifically about the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition

I hope everyone will pass the info on to their Diocese Bishop, and their Parish Priests.

In my Parish we are now selling copies of the “CCC 2nd Ed” in the Parish Office.
Greetings ANNE 2,

Thank you for posting this letter. I resolve this year by the grace of God to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church everyday for thirty minutes as lectio divina, if it is approved by my spiritual director, which I am sure it will be.

And mine is the green covered one. 😃

God Bless.

Thanks for the correction on the official use of the term “Second Edition”.

The actual history is considerably more complicated than you suggest.

First of all, I’m almost certain that the “First Edition” would be one of the prior incarnations (so to speak) of the modern text of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, prepared in the 1980s and 1990s, not the Roman Catechism from the 16th century, which is an entirely distinct work.

With regard to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, first there was a translation from the original French done under Cardinal Bernard Law which was rejected by the Vatican, then a new translation from the original French which was accepted and published. Following this the Latin Editio Typica came out in 1997 with a list of modifications to be made from it. My copy of the Catechism is from this era. It has the list of modifications in the back, and the modifications have in fact been made in the text itself.

All this time, until this discussion and the research it prompted me to do, I’ve been thinking that when people referred to the “Second Edition” they meant this edition with modifications from the Editio Typica, but apparently a real “Second Edition” did come out in 2000. According to the USCCB website:

"Q: How does the second edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church differ from the first edition?

A: The second edition differs in two ways. First, the second edition reflects the changes that were made in the final Latin text in 1997. Second, the second edition includes a new index. The glossary was also added in the American version of the second edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church."

usccbpublishing.org/productdetails.cfm?pc=929

Since the edition “with modifications from the Editio Typica” from the late 90s also includes the modifications from the 1997 Latin text, it would seem the only difference between this and the Second Edition is an improved index (which is great! My index is almost useless, it’s so bad) and a glossery.

If this is really the current state of things, then I wouldn’t condemn earlier editions, with the exception of Cardinal Law’s mistranslation, which I do not believe was ever widely distributed. Don’t confuse that rejected one with the approved translation of the original French, which is presumably inferior to the modified edition but still was approved, much less what we might call the first edition with modifications from the Editio Typica (my copy), which looks to be the same text just with an impractical index and no glossery. These older versions don’t lose their value any more than your copy would lose its value if/when the Vatican comes out with a new round of improvements.

Same thing with the Roman Catechism, which was written by a saint, promulgated by another saint, endorsed again and again by Church leaders up to at least the 1980s, and is quoted from several times in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It’s really an excellent book that I’d strongly recommend in addition to the newer catechism. I’m sure that by recommending the Catechism of the Catholic Church the Pope didn’t mean to imply we shouldn’t also read other great teaching documents produced by the Church, including classics like the Roman Catechism.

The first edition of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” which was written over 400 years ago is incorporated into the Second Edition.
The Second Edition was revised (first printing in USA March 2000 - see bottom of copyright page) to correct translation errors in the English version only.
Hence: “revised in accordance with the official Latin text promulgated by Pope John Paul II”.
For more lengthy and accurate information see pages 1-12 of the “CCC 2nd Ed”.

No one is condemning the first edition. The first edition is no longer being used or printed by the Catholic Church.
Re: Second Edition - “It should also help to illumine with the light of faith the new situations and problems which had not emerged in the past” - JP II, pg 4.
This is the Vatican web site link to the “CCC”.
vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/ccc_toc.htm

No Catholic has the authority to over-ride the Church Magisterium. This is schismatic at the very least.
Nor suggest that the “CCC 2nd Ed” not be read by all.
The copyright is held by the Holy See.
(As stated before, in the USA it has a dark green cover.)

Prior to returning to the Church, my husband and I read the “CCC 2nd Ed” to insure that we could do our best to live up to its teachings in total.
This CCC should be read not only by all Catholics, but by anyone interested in the truth (accuracy) of what the Catholic Church really teaches - without human error or bias.

CCC - " 2089 Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it.
*Heresy *is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same;
apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith;
schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him."

Eternity is most important. The CCC is one of the best Christmas gifts. It can Save Souls.

Huh? The Catechism of the Catholic Church does quote a few times from the Roman Catechism and follows a similar outline on the broadest possible level, and both are paragraph-form catechisms instead of the more common question and answer style catechisms, but beyond that they are entirely different works. If you get your hands on a Roman Catechism and read it you’ll see what I mean; the two are just apples and oranges to each other. This is also reflected in the fact that they have different titles, and that CCCs from the 90s don’t say “Second Edition” anywhere. The USCCB website clearly regards the edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church from before the Editio Typica as the “first edition”, leaving out mention of the edition with the modifications from the Editio Typica but without the new index and glossary presumably for the sake of simplicity.

Also, again remember that the bad translation made under Cardinal Law is not the one that was widely sold prior to 1997. That translation was rejected and a correct one was produced and made widely available (with that beige cover) in 1995. The modifications made in the Editio Typica were not a response to either English translation but were improvements on the French original which then were applied to all the other translations as well as the French.

Are you suggesting that I am guilty of schism, and perhaps of also of incredulity, heresy, or apostasy, because it appears to me that you are mischaracterizing the recent history of a particular book? Or because I suggest that by recommending the Catechism of the Catholic Church I seriously doubt the Pope is discouraging the reading of any other books?

  1. There have been only two Catechisms of the Catholic Church.
That written over 400 years ago, and the current edition.
Format is immaterial, content is what counts.
No other Catechisms of the Catholic Church have been promulgated by the Magisterium.
  2. The USCCB is not the “Magisterium” of the Church and never will be.
Many errors were made in the English translation and the 1995 Edition (which includes errors) is not used by the Church.
Some of the errors were serious.
  3. Read the 12 pages in the front of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” for the explanation.
  4. Cardinal Law had zero authority to propogate any CCC.
Propogation of the CCC can only be done by the Pope.
Cardinal Law’s activities are not important to this thread.
Therefore this has absolutely nothing to do with the “CCC 2nd Ed” or this thread.
  5. Quote from Pope John Paul II - pg 5, "CCC 2nd Ed" - - -
" The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I have approved…and the publication of which I order by virtue of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church’s faith and of Catholic Doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Church’s Magisterium.
I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the Faith and thus a valid and legitimate instrument for ecclesial communion." - Pope John Paul II, with Imprimi Potest by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger.
  6. " On September 8, 1997, Pope John Paul II formally promulgated the editio typica (the definitive Latin language edition) of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The next day the modifications to the original editions, published in the various modem languages, were made public. The modifications are intended to bring the texts of the modem language editions into conformity with the Latin text. This booklet contains the modifications to the English language text published in the United States in 1994 in trade editions and in 1995 in mass market editions. The numbers in bold preceding each of the modifications correspond to paragraph numbers in the original editions of the Catechism. "
    scborromeo.org/ccc/updates.htm
  7. The “CCC 2nd Ed” is posted verbatim on the VATICAN web site. Check out all contents- word for word if you desire.
Therefore this is the correct Catechism of the Catholic Church all over the World.

    vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/ccc_toc.htm
  8. You can read whatever you want, the bottom line is that per the Pope and the Vatican, the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” is the correct and only Catechism promulgated by the Church at this time in history.

**7 **above is the proof.

If you don’t like it, argue with the Vatican.

(In addition to the “CCC 2nd Ed”, Lessor Catechisms can be printed by local Bishop’s Conferences as long as they conform to the teachings in the “CCC 2nd Ed”. The content is lessor with lessor explanation and fewer references.)
  1. Bottom line: “**The Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edtion” dark green cover in the USA) is the only Catechism being promulgated by the Pope and Church at this time in history. This is the correct edition to refer to. **
You can choose to follow the Pope, or do your own thing. But please do not try to confuse others by getting them to read Catechisms with errors.

Sorry ran out of time for additions.

The first CCC written over 400 years ago had no errors, and it’s content is incorporated into the “CCC Second Ed”.

" This Catechism will contain both the new and the old (Mt 13:52), because the faith is always the same yet the source of ever new light. " - Blessed Pope John Paul II
pg 2 “CCC 2nd Ed”

Again, for those who are interested in further info, please read the first 12 pages
in the “CCC 2nd Ed”.

Wow Anne, I think you are getting overly worked up about Aelred’s posts. He is agreeing with you that the catechism is important. I don’t think anyone would dispute that. It does us no good to argue amongst ourselves like this. It is not likely to win over non-Catholics or lukewarm ones.

Let us be more positive and happy about encouraging our fellow Catholics and all people of good will to read the catechism with the green cover, or any other church document, Saint’s writings, devotional or prayer book approved by the Church during the upcoming Year of Faith. 😃

Sorry, but confusion runs rampant in the Church, and we must do whatever we can to stop the confusion, not add to it.
As stated before, the correct version of the CCC to read and use is the “CCC 2nd Ed” “revised in accordance with the official Latin text prmulgated by Pope John Paul II”.

Glad you brought up the “Year of Faith”.
Pope Benedict is specifically stating that we should read the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” - Promulgated by Pope John Paul II.
Without it we can not evangelize accurately. If we are not all on the same page (so to speak) heresies and schisms can and are born.

Here is the link to the Pope’s Moto Proprio on the Vatican web site.
Please see numbered paragraphs 11 & 12 specifically regarding the CCC.
vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/motu_proprio/documents/hf_ben-xvi_motu-proprio_20111011_porta-fidei_en.html

Since most people have limited time, the most important books to read are a Catholic Bible, and the “CCC 2nd Ed”.
