Also as a side note there were even more horrible anti-muslim riots in the Indian state of Gujarat. Which makes you wonder how India has such a strong opinion of itself as a country which respects human rights. I was horrified to read the boasting of one of them on one of the more courageous websites please read only if you have the courage as he boasts of the killing even of a pregnant woman. None of the individuals mentioned have been arrested.

You are correct it was the 1991-2 anti-muslim riots our parish church opened up its auditoriums for Muslims then, whose houses were burnt. My family also supports some orphans in a northern Indian state and they stiched a shawl for us this valentines day. My sister was going through a rough phase and was actually praying for a Valentine days gift not realising that God sometimes answers prayers most unexpectedly.
God bless again and I am sure God is working even in this situation to bring about some greater good. Just because we cannot see Him working does not mean he is not.
What a beautiful gift, & so nice that it came it came at a time when you’re sister maybe needed a lift.🙂

Gosh, that is just horrific. Thanks for warning us of the graphic nature of the report. Personally, this WAS especially awful, but I guess we do get de-sensatized after hearing lots of terrible news stories.

That man is just filled with incredible hate. So many of his comments & actions are just beyond belief. It is scary to think he is not arrested. I thought during the interview he was in jail or something. Do you know how many people were killed? I’m not sure why we don’t hear about some of these things here in the states.
I remember learning a little about very bad history between Muslims & Hindus in Pakistan & India, but somehow over the years I got the idea that Hinduism is such a peaceful religion. Is it just certain sects or groups that are more violent? I guess it is true that people of all faiths can be tempted by evil. May God have mercy on us!

Thanks again, while the Christian community is targeted quite frequently now see (Police Negligence Leads To Attack On Catholic Ashram Near Jabalpur cbcisite.com/cbcinews2138.htm and Communal Organizations Use Girl Children To Defame Church Personnel In Ujjain cbcisite.com/cbcinews2137.htm all in the past 3-4 days) the violence against Christians is much less in magnitude than against muslims, but the government does not act because one there is no international reaction and two because they delude themselves into thinking that if they do nothing the problem will go away. There is a strong element of denial.

Also must add that most Hindus are peaceful, there is nearly 70 years of propaganda by the fundamentalist to reach this level of violence. (forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?p=3300597) otherwise they are a very affectionate community.
God bless
Derrick

Oh, I agree with you that most Hindus are peaceful. That was always my general impression, so I didn’t mean to imply that they weren’t. I think you understood my main thought, which was that I was rather surprised even small numbers were capable of such violence. Thanks for the other news links. It is disturbing to see that the unrest & violence against Christians continues.

I hope more people sign the online petition.

Pune, February 18 Christian leaders from different denominations will take out a silent protest rally on Monday from YMCA, Quarter Gate, to condemn the attacks on Christian institutions in Orissa and Gujarat. They have urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take steps to ensure the safety of the community.
Disrupting church services and burning churches is deplorable, especially during the festive time, and the community fears a repeat of an infamous spate of violence in Gujarat’s Dangs district in 1998.
Dangs witnessed violence for ten days in December 1998.
More than 14 churches, four convents, three houses of priests and eight hostels were fully or partially destroyed besides injuries sustained by Christians in Kandhamal district’s Baliguda sub-division, Orissa, they said.

** INDIA: TWO MORE VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE SUCCUMB TO INJURIES IN ORISSA
Christian leaders report lax concern for refugees remaining in camps**
Police Bias
Local Christians also complain about police bias. After dark, several villages are without men because they fear being arrested on false charges. “Such is the terror of the police against the Christians that the men just cannot sleep in their own homes. They remain in the forested hills,” Dayal said.
Police superintendent Kanodia, however, said the police are neutral. “A criminal is a criminal. His religious affiliation does not matter to the police,” he said.
Kanodia also said 127 cases related to “communal and ethnic” violence had been registered. He also claimed that the death toll was three and included only one Christian. Christians do not believe that the Orissa violence was merely due to ethnic tensions. Christians make up approximately 16 percent of the 650,000 people in Kandhamal district. More than 60 percent of the Christians belong to the Pana community. They are classified as “scheduled castes,” or Dalits. They demand recognition as a tribal community, claiming they too speak the local language of Kui. But Kui tribal peoples oppose their recognition as it would add to the number of candidates for jobs reserved for them through the government’s affirmative action program.
According to the Indian Constitution, only Hindu Dalits can benefit from affirmative action in government jobs and education. A Dalit loses such privileges after converting to Christianity.
The National Commission for Minorities, which sent two researchers to Kandhamal district, reported on January 17 that the violence was “organized and preplanned.”
“The team maintained that the large-scale violence was because of the inaction of the administration,” reported the New Indian Express newspaper. In January, Dayal led a fact-finding team that also concluded the violence was carried out in a planned manner. (See Compass Direct News, “Fact-Finding Mission Suggests India Violence Was Preplanned,” January 4.)
Arunachal Das, the assistant district magistrate of Kandhamal, told Compass that 3,091 victims, both Christian and Hindu, live in five relief camps: two in Baliguda and three in the Daringbadi area. Attacks on Hindus’ houses were also reported during the Kandhamal violence. According to an order of the district magistrate, only the state government can distribute relief through the Red Cross. Other non-profit organizations and churches are not allowed to bring aid. The week-long spate of violence in Orissa began in Kandhamal on December 24. Special armed forces remain deployed in affected areas.
The Times of India newspaper reported on January 22 that the 700 members of the Central Reserve Police Force initially deployed would remain in Kandhamal until March 15.

India’s Two Plagues: The “Missing Women” and Violence Against Christians
The first of these number in the tens of millions, killed in their mothers’ wombs or as infants. As for anti-Christian intolerance, the latest explosion has taken place in Orissa. Behind it are fanatics of Hinduism and of the higher castes

by Sandro Magister
It is a violence that has risen to a crescendo in recent years, especially in certain states. Gujarat and Orissa are among them. In Orissa, which faces the Bay of Bengal, south of Calcutta, Australian Protestant missionary Graham Staines and his two children were killed after their car was set on fire in 1999.

Those who are hostile toward Christians accuse them of proselytizing, and therefore violating the Hindutwa, the identification between India and Hinduism asserted by intolerant Hindu nationalist currents. In reality, out of 1.2 billion Indians, Christians of all confessions make up little more than 2 percent. And they are not expanding, but slowly declining: from 2.6 percent in 1971 to 2.3 percent in 2001.

But at the same time, Christians run one of every five elementary schools in India, one of every four houses for widows and orphans, and one out of three houses for lepers and AIDS patients. Mother Teresa of Calcutta is the nation’s pride. Except among fanatical Hinduists.

In fact, the latest explosion of anti-Christian violence that took place in Orissa did not even spare the sisters and brothers of Mother Teresa. Last Christmas three of their houses in the district of Khandhamai were attacked by an enraged mob armed with swords, axes, iron rods, and clubs. The sisters and brothers had to flee into the woods. The aggressors vented themselves by devastating the houses and chapels.

This wave of aggression against Christians began on Christmas eve and continued during the following days in various locations, with attacks on churches, the burning of houses, and destruction of shops.

Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, archbishop of Ranchi, after a visit to the stricken zones, described what he had seen to the agency “Asia News” in this way:

“An expanse of ashes is what remains in the areas stricken by anti-Christian violence at Christmas in Orissa. It was diabolical; churches desecrated and houses burned. The villages upon which the extremist Hindu violence fell are today a vast cremation ground.”

Raphael Cheenath, the archbishop of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, the diocese hardest hit, in an assessment of the attacks released at the end of January numbered the victims at 6 dead and 5,000 homeless, and the destruction at 70 churches, 600 houses, 6 convents, and 3 seminaries. The Indian bishops’ conference gave the same report in a memorandum delivered to the national commission for human rights.

In his report, archbishop Cheenath points the finger at those whom he maintains are the promoters of aggression against Christians: the ideologues of intolerant Hinduism, ensconced in the group Vishva Hindu Parishad, and the members of the high castes, who are unfavorable toward the social advancement of the Dalits, the poorest, the outcast and “impure,” many of whom are converts to Christianity.

That’s so disturbing. I wish they would allow more aid in the area. Frankly, I’m surprised there are less than 5,000 signatures on the petition. If you look at the statistics mentioned, with 5000 homeless & so many churches & buildings burned, it’s similar to the devestation of a tornado or earthquake. I think most people still do not know about it. Continuuing prayers…

Dear MMM1
Yes,I imagine what you think, we are wondering. You must have guessed when is it going to be our turn.
But on a positive note I have managed to send money to the Archdiocese and this has been confirmed by the priests there, I have also sent the bank account numbers to my yahoo group and shortly at least in a small way we will be able to contribute financially to rebuilding.
The problem which Fr Mrutyunjaya Digal informed me was that Christians are unable to go back to the villages they came from and are wandering from place to place. They are guilty of the same crime we are guilty of, of Loving Our Lord Jesus Christ.
So, as in the early ages of the church persecution is fast becoming a way of life. In his own words, “People are still going one place to another for shelter as the other party is not allowing them to stay. Their hidden agenda is to annihilate Christianity from that district. But I believe God will never allow that to happen.”
Only 5000 signatures is dissapointing but few Christians in India, are aware of the problem, and of those few have either access to the internet or knowledge of the online petition.
Who is going to inform them if the world media is silent and the local media is not bothered. Please, remember to pray that people learn of this disaster, in India the mainstream media does not really care.
God bless
Derrick

Yes, you’re right, & thankfully, God is with them. Actually, as you mention, with the lack of media attention, getting 5,000 signatures is pretty remarkable, & you helped with that, Derrick. I don’t know how to link things, but maybe if you linked some of those news stories to American media like Fox News or MSNBC News, they might decide to cover it. Maybe not, but it’s just a thought I had. Anyway, have a good day, & I’m sure God will reward you for helping & caring for His children…

TRIBAL CHRISTIANS
Dalit and tribal Christians reportedly preparing to flee back to the jungle, where thousands of other believers, including priests and nuns, were hiding in previous weeks in the wake of the December violence.

Tensions have increased following the recent visit of Orissa’s governor who visited allegedly persecuted Christians, upsetting Hindu militants. Eyewitnesses said that soon after the February 8 visit, “Hindu radicals blocked all the roads in Barkhama” area and did not “allow police and government officials to leave” for four hours.

An eye-witness, apparently speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was “total confusion of law and order.” Besides Hindus at least three Dalit Christians from Baminigaon area in Orissa were detained by local authorities, apparently under pressure by local Hindus.

MORE VIOLENCE

News of the tensions in Orissa, came shortly after elsewhere in India some 125 Hindu militants reportedly attacked one of the oldest and best-known churches in Madhya Pradesh state, Masihi Mandir Church, Sunday, February 24, beating one of the fleeing members.

The assault followed an attack in Kosmi area of the state Friday, February 22, when a Hindu militants dragged at least four people from a home where Christians were meeting and beat them with bamboo poles, rods and belts, news reports said.

Hindu groups have stepped up their attacks, angered over the spread of Christianity in India, where most people are Hindus, rights groups say.

Thanks and perhaps you may be interested in the mail I received from Archbishops house from Fr M. Nayak, who informed me of the situation at the present time.

Dear Derrick,
Thanks for the mail, especially for your personal interest in us. As I had assured you few days before to keep you informed of the latest development, here below I give you the write-up of Archbishop Raphael Cheenath, SVD.
Dear friends,
I am extremely glad that you want to express your sympathy and concern for the Christians in Kandhamal where a serious attack on Christians and Christian institutions took place.

At present there is no open attack or clashes. There is an atmosphere of calmness. But the atmosphere is tense and fear is lurking the hearts of the Christians and the whole church in Orissa.

Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati who is the main conspirator in the whole episode is freely moving, conducting secret meetings, and planning, we do not know what. So there is fear. The serpent may strike any time. The government still does not allow us to distribute relief and take up rehabilitation. This is a very sinister intention masterminded by Sangh Parivar [the principal hindu fundamentalist group] who wants to stop conversion, all developmental activities of the mission by which the SC/ST [Underprivileged castes and tribes, also called Scheduled castes and tribes] are being liberated from the clutches of the upper caste and to force the Christians to be reconverted into Hinduism “Gharvapasi” [literally translated return to your house a hindu right wing reconversion programme for Christians –coercion used to force families to become Hindu].

With this embargo – Sangh Parivar and the Government which has surrendered itself to the pressure tactics of Sangh Parivar, hope to isolate Christians from the Church and bring them closer to Hinduism.

The Government is giving relief only through Red Cross. But it is not sufficient, it does not reach to the people who are still in the jungle either because their house is destroyed or not yet rebuilt, or they are afraid of being arrested.

Priests, religious, hostel children are back into their places but living with the minimum. Pastoral and other activities are being carried out though minimum.
Govt. has announced an interim subsidy of Rs. 2 lakhs for the hostels, dispensary and school. But even after 23 days of the announcement I have not got any money in my hand. But we may get it soon.

We are planning to take up the reconstruction of the damaged institutions (church, convents, hostels, minor seminary, dispensaries, etc.) as soon as the embargo is lifted. When it will happen I do not know. Since it is imposed because of the ulterior intention, it may take more time to remove it. Then we all believe that God has his won time. He is the only one who can write straight between crooked lines…

Our three teams of lawyers are helping our people to file FIR [also called a first information report a formal complaint with the police]and get those arrested out on bail. It is great help to the illiterate people in Kandhamal. Most of our Catholics who are arrested are out or bail. The case will be taken up later. The police usually make arrests both sides.

I had a chance to speak to the Bishops in Jamshedpur who had come for CBCI meeting (Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India). Afterwards we had some discussion and they have agreed to help and plan some strategy how to face this fast growing phenomenon of communalism.

Now no restriction on visitors to visit Kandhamal district. Our priests and religious visit them to give them some support. The missionaries in the affected area are picking up courage and engaging themselves into normal pastoral and evangelical activities…
Kindly help us in your prayers. I assure you of my prayers and the prayers of my people.
With best wishes I remain.

Thanks for the update, Derrick. It sounds like the violence is escalating in some areas, small reliefs in others. From what I understand, there sometimes seems to be little governmental control or support. I’m glad some of the priests & people have shelter now, but not all.

I loved the Archbishop’s phrase, “Kindly help us in your prayers.” I will do that!

So good to see how our Catholic/Christian Family come together and closer , on occasions like these and how internet helps to bring to light such deeds of darkness !

May His Mercy put out the evil of greed and the demonic fires of fear and hatred , to bring peace !

Thanks and God bless Mary and MMM1. I have attached the latest update from the Archbishop (in pdf format) who shows more courage than his frail 73 year old body would suggest. It is God who gives him the grace to carry on. It is true that now in Orissa, the Anglicans, Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostals, Assembly of God and many many other denominations have all become staunchly united and prepared to suffer martyrdom. I have also put a small note on what martyrdom meant for the early church here - forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=213968&page=5 may God give them a full restoration.

Thank you and God bless for taking up this cause !

divineword.org/index.asp

Seems many of the missionaries there blong to the above order and it is ironic that in this year dedicated to The Word , they are called in a special way to bear witness and we too able to be compassionate , in our deeds and prayers .

We have the twin Feasts of Divine Mercy Sunday and St.Thomas Sunday coming soon ; hope the patronage of St.Thomas , to protect against the new age powers will be specially asked for ; many of the missionaries probably belong to the SyroMalabar Church, with its special patronage under St.Thomas !

’ Be not afraid ’ - may it echo , esp.in those hearts that need to see The Face of The Father and be freed from the threatening voices of the prevailing powers !

Mary, help of Christians , pray for us !
